Independent Digital Filmmaking Where Story Comes First

Mikel J. Wisler

Born in Brazil, South America, Mikel J. Wisler spent most of his childhood in Campo Grande, Brazil. Living in a large city with many theaters, he grew up an avid viewer of films. Eventually, his missionary parents returned to their homeland, the USA. It was in this move that it became clear to Mikel that he should pursue filmmaking as a way of life.

Mikel is a writer, producer, and/or director of independent short films. He graduated from Bethel College, in Mishawaka, Indiana in May of 2004, with a Liberal Studies Major with concentrations in Writing, Theatre, and Cinematography and a second major in Philosophy. While a student at Bethel, he spent a semester at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center (LAFSC), where he studied screenwriting and filmmaking. During that time he had an internship at a management company in Beverly Hills.

Mikel also writes short stories, mostly in the science-fiction genre, and is a bit of a novelist. He has one novel undergoing revisions currently. He has also written or co-written several feature length screenplays, and continues to write features.

Aside from filmmaking and writing, Mikel does freelance video work. He has written and directed television commercials, worked on many corporate and commercial shoots, and worked in some capacity on more short films than he can count. Mikel worked as a production assistant for the Dallas Jenkins’s independent feature film, Midnight Clear, starring Stephen Baldwin in 2006. Later that year, Mikel directed the short film, "Cellar Door," which now has international sales representation through Ouat Media (pronounced "what") in Canada. "Cellar Door" has also been award the 2007 Cinephile Film Arts Grant and featured in two Indiana film festivals. In 2007, Mikel worked as the 1st assistant director for the feature film Silk Trees, directed by Jedidiah Burdick and produced by Evermore Pictures. After his move to the East Coast, Mikel served as the cinematographer for OU2, an independent television sitcom pilot directed by Rajah Samaroo.

In the fall of 2007, Mikel directed the short film, "Cold October," which has been featured at the 2008 International Film Festival of India and the 2009 Dam Short Film Festival. "Cold October" is now on sale on DVD through the Dam Short Film Society and has international sales representation through Ouat Media. In 2008 Mikel directed another short film, "Always Reaching." Both "Cold October" and "Always Reaching" are currently being submitted to festivals.

Mikel is married to Danae K. Wisler and lives in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Career Objectives:

Mikel's career objectives are to eventually be able to direct independent feature films with a high standard of quality, creativity, and marketability. To that end he is seeking funding for his first feature film. Always in search of what he calls "transcendent cinema," Mikel would like to help create films that explore the human condition, spirituality, and raise important questions. Mikel is also very interested in producing the work of new and talented filmmakers. In an effort to stay financially viable, he'd also like to work in the creation of high-end television and Internet commercials, and other creative video/film productions. Mikel continues to write, and hopes to sell some of his writing, both screenplays and prose.
