Independent Digital Filmmaking Where Story Comes First

Andrew Gilbert

Andrew Gilbert, native son of Indiana, attended Bethel College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in theatre. While attending Bethel, he spent a semester studying film at the Los Angeles Film Studies Center in Burbank, California. In California he worked at Madchance Productions (Death to Smoochy, Lucky Numbers, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) reading scripts.

The work in and exposure to film in Los Angeles inspired him to turn his creative endeavors from  theatre to the movies. "I can't deny the simple and perplexing power movies have on us all. I need to be a part of that," says Andrew. "The intricate play of light and sound coupled with the constant awareness of culture and financing create a work that is incorrigibly and passionately affecting culture.”

Andrew has recently obtained a Master’s Degree in English with a concentration in creative writing from Indiana University South Bend. He puts his newfound expertise to use on many of the scripts that are produced by Runaway Pen Productions. However, Andrew not only writes, but also acts, directs, and/or produces many projects. Andrew produced, wrote, and shot one of Runaway Pen’s early films entitled “Cellar Door,” a piece that has earned international distribution from Ouat Media. He has also produced, written, and shot “Cold October,” a short film that premiered at the International Film Festival of India. Its North American debut was later at the Dam Short Film Festival in Boulder City, Nevada (near Las Vegas), and it recently was nominated for "Best Horror Short Film" at the Shockerfest Film Festival. It was also selected for the Terror Film Festival in Philidelphia.

Since then Andrew has produced, written, and starred in a film called “Always Reaching.” A film he and his partner Mikel J. Wisler have high hopes for. “It is the type of film that I feel could really touch people. That’s what makes me more nervous than any success it could have; I want people to get it.” That short film had it’s premiere at the Hollywood East Film Festival earlier this year.

Andrew is currently co-writing, and directing one of Runaway Pen’s next projects. “I’m excited at the opportunity to direct. But it also terrifies me,” Andrew states. “The script is great; the cast is solid; the success of the completed project depends on so much but ultimately falls on the director’s shoulders. Yes, I get first billing, but I have to live up to it.”

Andrew currently teaches English at Brown Mackie College and Theatre/Film at Bethel College in Indiana.
