SPEEDWAY LEGEND ADDS SPICE TO SEASON OPENER

This Saturday nights (Nov 15) round of the South Island Sprintcar War of the Wings Series has attracted a record number of entries with thirteen cars slated to hit the track at the Xpress Print House Ruapuna Speedway, and that number could go higher with a number of teams battling against time.

The entry of Auckland's Allan Wakeling will raise the bar significantly as the eight time New Zealand Champion will race a brand new Triple X chassied car in the series.

Wakeling took part in last season's finale at Cromwell and is keen to take part in as many events as his hectic schedule will allow, however he says that a number of date clashes with his northern commitments are likely to force him to miss at least two rounds.

I really enjoy the South Island tracks and feel that by running as much of the series as I can that its a good way to put something back into the sport,” he said. “I'm lucky in that I've got a good support team in Christchurch and that makes it a lot easier for me.”

Wakeling has recently assisted the Cromwell drivers with a set up day and says that he will not under estimate any of the South Island drivers.

They all run hard and are keen to learn. I am really thrilled about how the class is building up down there.”

Another of the series favourites Christchurch driver Jamie Duff ventured to Auckland's Western Springs last weekend and acquitted himself well with some steady performances while current South Island Champion Glen Everett has put up a strong showing at Ruapuna's pre-season shakedowns.

Current series Champion Kevin Freeman from Nelson will run a limited campaign this summer however he is planning on contesting most of the WoW (War of the Wings) events.

Saturday nights meeting will also celebrate the Christchurch Speedway Associations 50th Anniversary and a number of old identities from the past will be in attendance.

Promising Competiter Numbers

NUMBERS UP AT RUAPUNA

An increase in competitor numbers across the board points to the forthcoming season at the Xpress Print House Ruapuna Speedway being a resounding success, says the President of the Christchurch Speedway Association Darren Nankivell.

The season gets underway on Saturday November 15.

We are thrilled that our numbers continue to increase, and the TQ's and Sprintcars look particularly strong,” he said.

For opening nite we are looking at upwards of a dozen of the V8 Sprintcars, with some out of town drivers from Nelson, Cromwell and Invercargill entered for the first round of the War of the Wings Series.

Nankivell is also pleased that after several months of protracted discussion, there has been some common ground found with the Solos and Sidecars in regards to their place on the Ruapuna programme.

The Youth Mini Stock class has also been 'adopted' as a Ruapuna class this summer, and will appear at several meetings.

We are rapt with their enthusiasm, and are only too happy to have them at a number of our shows.

There are ten race meetings slated for this season, with the Sprintcar Gold Cup in January already attracting enquiries from a number of North Island and American drivers.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

TO BE HELD

MONDAY 23rd  JUNE 2008

7.30PM

CLUBROOMS, HASKETTS ROAD, TEMPLETON, CHRISTCHURCH

Agenda:

Track Promotion for 2008/2009 Season

At the Annual General Meeting members were advised that both Speedworx and the Christchurch Speedway Association (CSA) wanted to continue to work together but Speedworx had indicated they wished to make changes to the agreement between Speedworx and CSA. The CSA Management Committee determined that the changes likely to be requested were of a significant nature and therefore a Special General Meeting would be required to seek CSA members’ approval of the changes.

Planning for the Special General Meeting was completed last week, however Speedworx subsequently have advised CSA Management they are to terminate their agreement with CSA and cease promoting speedway at Ruapuna.  The CSA Management Committee is now considering options for the 2008/2009 speedway season and wishes to discuss these with members at this meeting.

As per our Constitution, be aware that only paid up full members have speaking or voting rights.  Associate members and non-members are very welcome to attend but do not have speaking or voting rights.

IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ATTEND THIS MEETING IF YOU WISH TO SUPPORT YOUR TRACK AND RACE IN THE COMING SEASON!

Freeman wins War of the Wings

Nelson’s Kevin Freeman took overall honours in the War of the Wings Sprintcar series when maintaining his narrow lead in the final round at Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday evening in what was the final meeting of the season. Freeman came into the fourth round holding a three point lead over Christchurch’s Karen Forsey and these two drivers again were locked in tight battled as the twelve race series came to an end.

Freeman increased his point lead to five when winning the opening heat, with Forsey coming from the back of the field to finish in third place behind Glen Everett. Forsey again finished in third place, in the next heat, behind Daryl Wright and Steve Duff with Freeman in fourth place with his overall cut to four points.

Duff  then lead the final heat from start to finish with Forsey having a great battle with Freeman for second and third spot.

On a restart Freeman briefly got by Forsey but she quickly responded and regained second place and gave chase to Duff as Freeman seemed content to retain third place knowing that would be enough to take the series by three points from Forsey, on 213 with Darren Nankivell a further third fifty points adrift. Both Freeman and Forsey deserved their top two placing as they were the only drives among the nineteen drivers that contested the series that finished all twelve races. Freeman then took out the Feature event from Duff and Forsey.

David Kerr was the star of the midget car racing, winning all four races with ease. Kerr who won the South Island title in the last meeting had too much speed for his rivals and was less than a second out side both the lap and eight place records.

Ricky Brett was almost as dominant in the TQ class when winning the opening heat and then had to settle for second place behind Rachel Melrose in the next heat before coming back strongly to win the next two races. Glen Milroy also had a good meeting picking up third placing in all four races.

Competition in the modified sprint section was more even with four different race winners with Mark Jamieson backing up two second placings before taken out the feature, with other the race winners being Keith Brough , Kieran Harris and Matt Honeywell.

Kody Tocher and Craig Blacket were the pick of the solo riders with Tocker winning two of the races to Blackett’s won. In the Kiwi Kid classes Kate Warren and Anthony Knowles were the stars in their respective racing classes.

PICKENS SETS THE PACE AT NZGP

Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway                                                                     Gavin Searle

Auckland driver, Michael Pickens dominated the New Zealand Midgetcar Grand Prix, raced at Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway on Thursday evening. The 25 year old took out the GP Feature, set a new ten lap record, set the fastest time of the meeting and was joint top points scorer in his qualifying group and will go into Saturday’s Southern 50 Lap event at Ruapuna as red hot favourite.

Pickens collected his first Grand Prix title, leading for most of the 30 laps after having a great battle with Shayne Alach on the opening laps with the lead swapping several times before Pickens opened up a lead. Alach then has a close dice with follow Aucklander, Scott Buckley for the first half of the race before Alach was passed by Michael Kendall.

With Pickens holding the lead on the slick racing surface his rivals had to try and drive around the outside but Pickens car, borrowed from local driver Aaron Webb always had the measure on his rivals. Buckley looked to be heading for a deserved second place until he rolled his car was five laps remaining restarting the race for the rear of the field and eventually finishing eighth.

This left Kendall holding second place behind Pickens at the restart but Kendall was passed by New Zealand champion, Shaun Insley (Auckland) during the next lap with Kendall having to settle for third place overall, from Bill Clarkson and Bryce Townsend, both Auckland, with Ray Baughan the first local drive home in sixth place.

Earlier in the evening Kendall shattered the 15 lap race record by over seven seconds but this mark was short lived at Pickens lowered the record by another two seconds when winning his second qualifying heat. Pickens followed Buckley and Alach home in his first heat, setting the fastest lap time of the meeting of 14.34 seconds, which was just over 0.1 of a second outside the lap record held by Pickens.

Once Pickens finishes his racing commitments in Christchurch he will be heading back to the USA to further his quest to race in NASCAR.

RICKY LOGAN GETS THE DOUBLE

Powerbuilt Ruapuna Speedway                                                                                                                                 Gavin Searle

American driver, Ricky Logan, won a pulsating New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix, at Powerbuilt Ruapuna Speedway, on Saturday evening after being pushed all the way by Auckland’s Dean Brindle, with Jim Siegel (USA) third. Logan and Brindle then again had a great dice in the Gold Cup with Logan again just taking the honours from the Auckland driver.

Logan, a professional driver who is a regular on the dirt tracks during the New Zealand summer, was joint top qualifier top going into the Grand Prix, along with eight time NZ champion, Kerry Jones (Auckland), after each driver had claimed a win, second and third from their three qualifying heats to finished on 27 points, out of a possible 30 points. Brindle was two points behind with current NZ champion, Carl Wilson (Auckland) on 24, one ahead of Phil Game with two other American drivers, Jim Siegel 20, and Steve Buckwater 17 next with Greg Clemence, the first local also finishing with 17 points.

Jones and Logan started on the front row for the 25 lap Grand Prix, which saw two cars involved in a spectacular crash after Jones got a ‘flyer’ which forced race officials to abort the start and has the cars concertinaed going down the back straight Kevin Freeman (Nelson), who won the first heat and Auckland’s Ron Salter car touched as they slowed causing both cars to roll and end their race.

Jones was allowed to restart under protest in his original position and lead the restart for the first two laps before spinning out on the Town bend which allowed Logan into the lead from Brindle. Jones recovered but dropped back to fifth to finally finish in seventh place. Brindle slowly then applied the pressure on Logan with Brindle’s car liking to run wide out on the Town Bend Brindle twice got by Logan only to have the yellow lights come on after other cars spun with the lead resuming back to the previous completed lap which allowed Logan back in front. On lap eight, Siegel used the outside groove to pass Brindle with Brindle then repeating the move to get by Siegel five laps later and set out after Logan who had opened up a small lead. Over the remaining laps Brindle slowly reeled in Logan and mounted one challenge coming out of the Town bend but Logan squeezed Bridle up by the safety fence with the chequered flag coming out two laps later. Siegel claimed third place after first seeing off Wilson and then re-passing Game with four laps to run after Game had held third place for a lap.

The Speedworx Gold Cup turned out to be another heart stopping affair with Logan and Brindle using the wide passing line blast by lapped cars as the chased each other for the entire 30 laps. Jones again lead from the start with Brindle taking the lead with almost half the race completed  and with Logan back in fourth place Brindle looked that have the race in the bag but Logan first passed Jones and then set out after Buckwater with Logan passing his countryman with eleven laps to race. Logan then closed on Bridle and with just two laps to run blasted around the outside of the Aucklander to claim his second big feature win of the night. Buckwater was third with Allan Wakeling of Auckland, producing the drive of the night when coming from grid sixteen in the eighteencar field to claim fourth place. The former multi NZ champion had to sit of the Grand Prix after the motor problems in his first heat with local driver, Daryl Wright loaning Wakeling his car for the Gold Cup.

In the supporting races Ricky Brett had the ideal build up for next Saturday’s TQ Masters when winning all four races while Gary Chadwick won the first two midgetcars races with Ray Baughan taking out the Feature.

NZ SPRINT CAR GRAND PRIX

Christchurch, New Zealand

Speedway fans are in for a double whammy this Saturday night (February 23) at the Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway when last weeks washed out New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix will also be backed up by the running of the 6th Sprintcar Gold Cup.

A twenty car field is still expected for the event with several drivers unable to alter travel plans, and the break has given the American duo of Steve Buckwalter and Jim Siegel an opportunity to make some adjustments to the two local Scorpion Racing cars that they will drive.

Siegel has been eager to get back behind the wheel, with last Thursday nights show being the first racing that he has done since last October.

“I felt a little rusty, and to be honest the closeness of the racing on a quarter mile track like that at Ruapuna caught me out a bit. I am more used to running on half milers, and the biggest adjustment was the hard out wheel to wheel stuff that you get on the smaller tracks”said Siegel.

Among Siegel’s rivals on Saturday night will be defending Grand Prix title holder Dean Brindle (Hamilton) who showed plenty of pace in winning last Thursdays feature, and another visiting American Ricky Logan.

Multi time New Zealand Champions Allan Wakeling and Kerry Jones will also return from  Auckland for another assault on the silverware up for grabs. Jones will be at the wheel of his regular Salter Motorsport car, while Wakeling will strap into Steve Duff’s near new machine.

The top finishing South Island driver at last Thursdays show, Ruapuna regular Kevin Freeman is another to be watched. He has shown no shortage of speed all summer long, and is starting to extract the best from his Chinese built XXX chassied machine.

Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway Gavin Searle

Auckland’s Dean Brindle took out the honours in the USA verses New Zealand sprintcar clash at Ruapuna Powerbuilt speedway, on Thursday evening when heading home the fifteen car field in the 20 lap feature.

Brindle when into the feature three points behind American Ricky Logan, each having won a heat as did James Siegel (USA), who was making his racing debut in New Zealand. The heat racing was fast and furious but clean, with the only incident coming in the opening heat when 8 time NZ champion, Kerry Jones of Auckland, car rolled softly on its side after contact with Siegel coming out of Town bend.

In the feature Logan lead briefly on the green but Bridle was leading out of the first turn and opening up a handy lead hen only closed up going through lapped traffic. Logan pressed Brindle all the way with Stratford’s Graeme ‘Skinny’ Coleson third with a great battle between Nelson’s Kevin Freeman, Siegel and Auckland’s Ron Salter for the next positions with the American finally managing to pass Freeman with three laps to run to claim fourth spot.

All the drivers plus seven, including current NZcham, Carl Wilson and 8 time champ Allan Wakeling will line up in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Ruapuna on Saturday evening.

In the supporting events Gary Chadwick took out the midget car feature when gunning by Nelson’s Nevil Basalaj early in the race with Basalaj having to settle for second with Dunedin’ Gavin Wilkie third.Earlier in the meeting Basalaj and local Ray Baughan had so great dices with Basalaj winning two heats from Baughan before the roles were reserved in the final heat.

Ricky Brett was the star of the TQ section when taking the chequered flag in the opening two heats before finishing second to Rachel Melrose with Brett then coming back to claim victory in the feature.

The modified sprint class provided plenty of action with all the heat winners, Jamie Duff, Matt Honeywell and Tom Lumsden all rolling during the meeting as did American Chris Haskell which left Kieren Harris to win the feature from Paul Denson and Keith Brough.

Last Chance to see the Sprint Car Legends?

LAST HURRAH FOR SPRINTCAR VETERANS?

This Saturday nights New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix at the Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway could be the last time that Christchurch fans get to see two of the greats racing together.

The Auckland duo of Kerry Jones and Allan Wakeling have both won eight national championships each, and have dominated Sprintcar racing in this country to such an extent that just five other drivers have added their names to the trophy since 1986.

Both are nearing the ends of their careers, and with no national event schedule for Christchurch next summer Wakeling concedes that the chance of them being back at Ruapuna together is remote.

“You’ve got to get out of the seat eventually.I have no idea how much longer we’ll be racing. I love racing down here in Christchurch, and ‘Jonesy’ and I have both got a strong fan base down here. We started racing on the same night at Western Springs in 1984 and have had some great clashes through the years at Ruapuna. We both love the nice wide track here,”said Wakeling.

While Jones will be driving his Salter Motor Sports Maxim, Wakeling has accepted the drive in Steve Duffs new J&J for Saturdays meeting.

“Duffy’s boy Jamie has some Formula Ford commitments up north this weekend. I am very grateful for Steve’s offer to drive for him. It’s a hell of a good car and young Jamie has been going well in it.”

Wakeling who is the current lap record holder at Ruapuna says that the challenge that will be put up by the American entrants will be a strong one but “The best of the best from up north are here, and you never write off the South Island guys either.”

Veteran driver Ricky Logan heads up the American challenge, and he will be keen not to be outshone by his much younger rivals in Jim Siegel and Steve Buckwalter. Logan bases his racing around the schedule at the Knoxville Raceway in Iowa which is regarded as the world capital of Sprintacr racing, while Siegel and Buckwalter are from Pennsylvania.

A strong North Island contingent among the twenty four strong entry list includes current New Zealand Champion Carl Wilson (Auckland), Phil ‘Wildman’Game (Auckland), Dean Brindle (Hamilton),Ron Salter (Auckland), the Tauranga duo of Bernie Gillon and Kerry Anne James, former Super Saloon star Skinny Colson (Stratford), and Palmerston North’s Ian Easton returns to Ruapuna after he made his last appearance here close on twenty years ago.

The resurgent South Island Sprintcar brigade will be headed by current Canterbury Champion Kevin Freeman (Nelson) who has shown good form recently, while the pace setter at the seasons early meetings Lindsay Gilbert has also entered the meeting. Gilbert performed well at the nationals at Bay Park before he had to put his racing to one side to concentrate on his farm work.

No Love being shown on Valentines night

NO LOVE WILL BE SHOWN AT VALENTINES DAY SPRINTS

Christchurch, New Zealand

Love is unlikely to be in the air on Valentines Day at the Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway in Christchurch

on Thursday night (February 14 when ) twhen he opening night of a three race International Sprintcar  Series kicks off and two of the visiting American drivers Jim Siegel and Steve Buckwalter are promising a night of ‘tough love’ for their kiwi counterparts.

The two youngsters are part of the ‘Pennsylvania Posse’, a name given to drivers from that region who traditionally give the famous World of Outlaws drivers their toughest challenge in the seventy race series that weaves its way around America each year.

Buckwalter has already out qualified the Outlaws at two meetings on his home track, the daunting half mile circuit at Williams Grove and he is promising that Christchurch is not a holiday destination for him.

“I’m here to clean up. Why else would I fly half way around the world” said the feisty thirty year old who’s recent antics after he was crashed out of a big event by a rival were caught on national television in the USA.

“We race hard, but clean. I haven’t really met any of the guys that I’ll be racing against down here but we will have a healthy respect for them.”

Ricky Logan, a veteran of the American Sprintcar scene will also be in action on Thursday night, and he has racked up a string of feature wins during his recent appearances throughout the North Island. Logan has competed at Ruapuna several times before, and is keen to continue on his winning ways.

A number of North Island drivers will also be competing on Thursday night, which serves as a lead up to Saturday nights New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix. Among those arriving for an early shakedown are the Salter Motorsport team headed by former truck racing star Ron Salter, who has eight times national champion Kerry Jones, and Dean Brindle as his team mates.

Bragging rights from the Canterbury Champs

 Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway                                                                                                                     Gavin Searle

Racing was keen at Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday evening as the Canterbury championships were contested for all car classes. Nelson based Kevin Freeman took out the Sprintcar title which was good build up to the three international meetings over the coming fortnight which will see three American drivers plus a host of top drivers from the North Island racing against the best from the South Island.

Freeman had to work hard in the two qualifying heats, the first won in a canter by Jamie Duff by over ten seconds, from Danny Mason and Darryl Wright with Freeman fourth. Duff set one of the fastest lap times of the season, 13.39 seconds on lap two of the fifteen lap race.

Karen Forsey took out the second heat with Duff coming from near the back of the field to finish in second place with Darren Nankivill third, with a spin in the open laps costing Freeman any hope of the top placing. With the top six points scoring being inverted for the starting grids in the final Freeman was second after the first lap and then passed Nankiville on the next lap. After that he was never seriously challenged for the lead with all the action coming for the minor placings. Forsey, Wright and Duff were battling for third place until a spin dropped Duff to the rear of the field which meant Forsey finished in third place behind Freeman and Nankivill

Gary Lennon was first in the midget car title changing to the lead on the opening lap to win the title by three seconds from Ray Baughan and Nevil Basalaj. Basalaj (Nelson) won the two qualifying heats but his twice nearly stalled on the Prison bend which cost him any hope of taking out the title.

Ricky Brett dominated the Three Quarter midget title finishing third in the opening heat and then winning the next heat before starting in sixth place in the final and was in second place behind Glen Milroy by the end of he third place. ALDRIDGE TO GOOD IN CANTY CHAMPS

Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway                                                         Gavin Searle

Solo rider, Andrew Aldridge dominated the Canterbury championship raced at Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday evening, winning the three heats and then leading the final from start to finish.

Aldridge, the former national Under 21 champion, has almost been in a class of his own this season and looks set to head to England in March to race for Rye House in the Conference League. The twenty-two year old was untroubled to take the chequered flag in the heats races with Invercargill’s Andrew Tree in second place from Kody Tocker.

In the final Nelson’s Sean Cox briefly lead from the starting tapes but Aldridge was first into the Town bend and was never headed with the battle for second place after Tree made a poor start. Cox held second place, from Tree at the start of the final lap but going into the final turn Tree dived under the Nelson rider with Tree holding on to win by a bike length.

The Canterbury sidecar title was a more even affair but turned out to be a Nelson benefit after Christchurch combinations suffered problems. After finishing second in the opening heats, Lionel Green and Aaron Ray nights racing ended when blowing the clutch on their outfit in the second heat. Inform local pairing of Bevan Nuttridge and Karl Foster had a quiet night and were never in contention.

Liam Stockman and Blair Lock was the best of the locals with two third placing in the heats but had to settle for fourth place in the final behind Nelson’s Nathan Ching and Laurie McMahon. Neville Currn and Wolf McGill (Nelson) were second overall from yet another Nelson pair of Nigel Payton and Chris Harper who had gone into the final as favourites after taking out two of the heats.

In the car classes Michael Moulin took out the TQ feature from Ricky Brent and Rachel Melrose. Earlier in the evening Brett recorded a win and a second in the heat racing. With Kimberly Yeatman rewarded with her improved form in recent weeks with a third placing in the opening heat

Melrose finished ahead of the field in the Modified Sprint feature from Matt Honeywell and Brett Robinson. Honeywell and Melrose also featured in the heat results.

HEATWAVE AT POWERBUILT SPEEDWAY

Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway                                                         Gavin Searle

With temperatures hovering around the mid 20’s, and the north west wind sweeping across the plains on Saturday evening, track conditions at Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway inevitably become slick which reduced the racing line late in the meeting.

Nelson’s Nevil Basalaj made a welcome return to the midget ranks and was rewarded when leading from start to finish taking the chequered flag in the feature. The conditions suited Gary Robertson’s smaller Toyota powered machine with Robertson driving a fine race to finish behind Basalij with David Kerr finally getting the better of Dunedin’s Gavin Wilkie to claim third spot. Ray Baughan won the first two midget races but crashed out of the feature event when involved in a crash on the Prison Bend.

There were three different winners in the sprintcar class with visiting drivers dominating the opening race won by Nelson’s Kevin Freeman from the Cromwell pairing of Jason Scott and Gary Price.  Price was second to Daryl Wright on the next race with Lindsay Gilbert then taking out his second successive feature win

As usual the large three quarter midget field turned on some close racing. Newly crowned South Island champion, Kyle Glover, finished behind Ryan Stone and Rickey Brett.  Glover’s nights racing ended when involved in a crash in the next race which was awarded to Mike Moulin. Brad Mackwell claimed his first feature win when heading home Moulin and Jeremy Beaton.

In the Modifield Sprint section American driver, Chris Haskell was a clear winner in the opening heat, before problems sidelined him for the remainder of the racing.  Tom Lumsden was promoted into first place in the next race after Matt Honeywell started out of position with Honeywell coming back strongly to take out he feature race from Reon Taylor and Brett Robinson.

Gilbert impresses at Sprint Car Nats

A late race crash may have prevented Lindsay Gilbert from grabbing a bigger slice of the $30,000 in prizemoney but his performance at  the New Zealand Sprintcar Championship at Bay Park over the weekend suggests that he is destined to become one of the real shining lights in the South Island Sprintcar scene.
Lindsay, a Southbridge farmer, put in a solid performance at the Friday night preliminaries and backed that up with a fifth place finish in his groups dash to start the 25 Lap final from grid 9.
Despite the strength of the field Gilbert, in just his second season of racing Sprintcars held his own until the late race multi car crash ruined the aspirations of a number of drivers.
Karen Forsey failed in her bid to advance from the C Main however she too will return to Powerbuilt Ruapuna Speedway with renewed confidence.
The title was yet another Auckland cleansweep with Carl Wilson taking out the crown from Kerry Jones and Phillip Game.

Southbridge farmer Lindsay Gilbert put up a solid performance at Bay Park speedway last night (January 4) to qualify for the New Zealand Sprintcar Championship which will be run tonight.
Gilbert qualified 21st quickest out of the 48 entrants but then drove superbly in his heat to nab fourth place, which earned him the finals berth. He had to dig deep to hold out the fourth fastest qualifier Aucklander Havard Daniels.
The only other South Island driver to contest the event Karen Forsey will have a tough job to make the cut. She timed 41st and will start in the C Main. She will have to finish in the first two in that race to advance to the B Main, and then a top eight finish in that event would secure a starting spot in the championship race.
Allan Wakeling set the fastest time with his long time rival and fellow 8 time New Zealand Champion Kerry Jones being second fastest.
The starting grid for the feature will be determined by 2 dash races, with Gilbert up against a tough lineup including Wakeling, American Ricky Logan, former NZ Champion Ben Finemore and a top ranked Auckland driver Carl Wilson.

Santas Speedway Spectacular!!

Meeting 2  December 15

A large field of sprintcars turned on some heart stopping racing at Ruapuna Powerbuilt speedway on Saturday evening, with Lindsay Gilbert producing the drive of the night to take the chequered flag in the feature going from third to first on the last lap.

Gilbert, a Southbridge farmer, started the fifteen lap feature near the back of the 13 car field with his crowd pleasing hard charging style seeing him in eighth place by lap one. As race leader, Darren Nankivell opened up a handy lead from Cromwell’s Gary Price, Gilbert slowly picked off his rivals one by one and with half the race run was in fourth place behind Nelson’s Kevin Freeman, who had finished third in the opening heat and then won the next heat.

Gilbert passed the Nelson driver in the next lap and with Nankivell and Price slowed by lapped traffic Gilbert closed in on the leaders and on the white flag lap first passed Price and then called on all 700 plus horsepower on the final turn to blast around the outside of Nankivell to win the drag to the chequered flag by less than a tenth of a second, with Price just managing to hold out Freeman for third place from the fast finishing Glen Everett and Karen Forsey.

Racing was just as intense in the Three Quarter Midget class with Glen Durie winning the opening heat and then backing that achievement up in the feature after being pressed all the way by Ryan Stone. Stone followed Durie home in the opening race and then finished third in the next heat behind Gareth Bindon and Jeremy Beaton.

American modified sprint driver, Chris ‘The Hitman’ Haskell was untroubled to win his opening two heats with the 21 year old then spinning out of the feature which was won by Brett Robinson from Kieran Harris with Charles Gardiner in third place. The modified sprint class provided two of a handful of spectacular rolls during the meeting with Glen Sole rolling in the first heat with the meeting delayed for several minutes in the feature after Steve Duff junior gained some serious air time when flipping heavily on the Prison Bend. All then drivers were unhurt.

David Kerr won both heats in the midget car class and then had to be content with second place in the feature behind Ray Baughan, who led the event from start to finish. Bevan Nuttridge and passenger, Karl Foster continued to impress on their sidecar, winning all three races from Liam Stockman and Blair Lock.

The solo class was dominated by Andrew Aldridge and Kody Tocher with Aldridge, who has signed a contact to race professionally in England from March winning two races from Tocher with Tocher taking out the second race from his rival. In the junior classes Anthony Knowles was unbeaten on his bike while Matt Leversedge was the stand out in is quarter midget.

OPENING NIGHT - 2ND ATTEMPT!!

The new season at Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway commenced on Saturday evening with the feature being the opening round of the War of the Wings series for Sprintcars which attracted drivers from throughout the South Island.

Karen Forsey took of the opening heat from Daryl Wright and Queenstown driver Jason Scott who was making his Christchurch debut. Glen Everett held out Forsey to take the chequered flag in the next heat, with Darren Nankivell in third place.

The feature event saw Forsey and Everett start on the front row with Forsey holding an early lead before Everett got by going on to open up a handy advantage while Forsey was kept busy having to fight off a challenge from Wright.

Other racing was also closely contested with the modified sprint class producing three different race winners. Rachel Melrose had the honour of winning the first race of the new season and had a busy night when also racing in the TQ midget and midget classes. The busy Melrose completed over eighty racing laps during the meeting. Matt Honeywell took out the second modified sprint race with visiting American driver, Chris Haskell, winning the feature.

There were three different race winners in the TQ class with Glen Durie making a welcome return to this division when taking out the feature race after passing Melrose on the closing laps and then winning the race to the chequered flag.

David Kerr and Ray Baughan were the stand out drivers in the midget class with Kerr claiming two second places before winning the feature after a great dice with Baughan who headed Kerr in the second race. Lionel Green and Aaron Ray made it a clean sweep in the sidecar racing, winning all three races but were made to work hard by the pairing of Bevan Nuttridge and Karl Foster who were having their first meeting together. Nuttridge, who previously finished in the top three in the national title as a passenger showed that is more that capable as a rider of the three wheeled excitement machines.

RAIN WRECKS SEASON OPENER

 POWERBUILT RUAPUNA SPEEDWAY 1-12-07

Persistent heavy drizzle that closed in across Christchurch early in the evening forced the cancellation of tonights (Saturday Dec 1) season opener at the Ruapuna Powerbuilt Speedway before the main programme had started.
While the preliminary events were completed the track soon became too greasy for the main programme and officials were forced to cancel the show.
The season will now kick off on Saturday December 8 with the Trophy Challenge and round one of the Xpress Print House Sprintcar war of the Wings.
The strength of the resurgent Sprintcar section across the South Island is likely to be shown with a number of drivers from Nelson, Invercargill and Cromwell indicating their intention to compete in this event.
Spectators who purchased tickets for tonights show can use that ticket next saturday night

NEW PROMOTERS ANNOUNCED!!

Last nights (June 20) Annual General Meeting of the Christchurch Speedway
Association has confirmed the appointment of Speedworx Promotions as the new
promoters of the Powerbuilt Speedway at Ruapuna.

A spokesman for Speedworx Ross Pickersgill said that their appointment for a
term of three years gave them the opportunities to improve some of the
stadium facilities.

"We will be sprucing the place up a bit, and making some changes."

One of the more obvious alterations will see the infield solo track covered
with grass, and Pickersgill says that a new surface will be applied to the
main oval.

"The track needs to cater for all classes. It happens at other venues and we
will work hard at making it happen here."

C.S.A Secretary Mike Northmore said that "The club is delighted to have a
locally based promoter prepared to invest in open-wheel racing at the
Ruapuna Speedway. Competitors we've spoken to are looking forward to the
longer season and new track surface, and supporters can expect steadily
improving conditions in the stadium."

The speedway calendar will be released soon and the track will run a minimum
of fifteen meetings. There will be a number of International shows as well
as some major national events including the New Zealand Sprintcar Grand
Prix.

Speedworx Promotions are fronted by Ross and Anna  Pickersgill, Myles Forsey
and Ray Baughan.

Forsey is a past Sprintcar driver, while Baughan is one of the top Midget
car drivers at the track. The Pickersgill's also have a Speedway background,
with Anna being a former competitor at Woodford Glen, and in recent years
they have sponsored a number of local competitors.

Double Duty for Greg Clemence

The chance to get in more racing laps this summer will see Christchurch
Sprintcar driver Greg Clemence supplementing his activities with a stint at
the wheel of a Modified Sportsman  .
Clemence said that the offer was too good to turn down, but that Sprintcars
remain his main priority.
"The Sprintcars are my passion, and when there are gaps in our calendar at
Powerbuilt, I'll be campaigning the Modified for a couple of mates who own
the car. The two classes are similar enough not to cause me too much of a
learning curve. It's all about getting in the laps. I'll be running the wee
358 Motown in the Sprinter this summer, but a 410 will happen probably the
summer after. The North Island guys always have an advantage over us by the
combination of more laps and more racing. Running Sprintcars and the
Modified will be the most practical way of me achieving that."
With Powerbuilt Speedway slated to kick off in early December this summer
Clemence is happy about the prospect of already having hand plenty of racing
before he straps himself back into the RBR Maxim.

NANKIVELL TAKES OUT SOUTH ISLAND TITLE

Darren Nankivell won his first South Island championship, when he took out
the Midget car event at Riverside Raceway, Invercargill last weekend.

He had to survive a run-off for first place with Dunedin's Gavin Wilkie
before the celebrations could begin.

Gary Chadwick finished third.

5 records broken!!Final night of the season

Five track records marked the final nights racing of the season at
Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday evening which included the staging of the
South Island Sprintcar championship which was won for the fourth time by
Steve Duff.
Duff finished third in the opening heat, headed home by his son Jamie and
Lindsay Gilbert. Duff senior then won the second heat from Karen Forsey and
Gilbert with his winning time shaving 0.28 seconds off the ten lap record
that he had held since the 1998/99 season.
In the final Duff had too much pace for his rivals, leading from the green
flag with Gilbert holding second place, content to play a waiting role in
case Duff made a mistake, which never came. Gilbert, a former tractor drag
racer, and Forsey, both with just a season's sprintcar racing behind filled
second and third place overall.
Modified sprint driver Rachel Melrose set two new records when winning heat
3 of the H Pac South Pacific Championship. On the third lap of the fifteen
lap race Melrose lowered the track record to 14.34 seconds, which she had
previously held and then established a new 15 lap record of 3:45 55 seconds
smashing the old record by over 12 seconds.
The South Pacific Championship was won by rookie, Matt Honeywell, after a
run-off with Grant Dacombe after both drivers finished the three heats level
on 29 points with third placed Brett Robinson, also a new comer to the
sport, on 28 points.
The two other track records that  fell during the evening were in the Midget
cars where David Kerr bloke the old 15 lap record by nearly 4 seconds but
this mark was broken later in the meeting by Darren Nankivell who stopped
the clock at 3:56.28 seconds.
Sixteen year-old, Dale Finch continued to impress when winning the
Canterbury solo title, to add to his runner-up spot in the national title
earlier in the summer.  Finch was third in the first heat, behind Kody
Tocher and Andrew Aldridge, but then won the next two heats before going on
to take out the final with ease from Graham Wilson and Scott Jeffcoate.

Pickens lead the start with Alach and Currie battling for second and third
with Currie finally managing to secure second place on lap eighteen. Several
times the race went   under yellow but Pickens was always in control of the
restarts and drove smoothly on the slick track. Aucklander's Bill Clarkson
and Lance Beale finished fourth and fifth overall with the defending

N.Z Midget Title Qualifying Results

POWERBUILT SPEEDWAY, RUAPUNA SATURDAY FEBRUARY 24

The major talking point from the qualifying heats of the Accessman New
Zealand Midgetcar Championships was the withdrawl two of the top contenders,
Brad Mosen (Auckland) and Nevil Basalaj (Nelson). Both suffered major motor
failures which will put them out of the repercharge that will find the last
three drivers for the 24 car field for the finals. Basalaj's car struck
problems in the warm-ups and did not contest any of the heats while teenager
Mosen was leading his first heat by a big margin when the motor went off
song.
The only surprise non qualifier from group 1 was local Dick Webb who failed
to start the final heat after his car was measured as being too wide, with
Webb missing the cut by just a single point. Auckland's Simon Longdill
qualified with ease after rolling his car in the hot laps.  Former
champions, Graham Standring, (blown oil line) and Michael Kendall (battery)
failed to finish their middle heat but then in the top two in the final heat
to qualify.
With Mosen and Basalaj out of group two there was no
 surprises among non
qualifiers with Bryce Townsend heading the group withj 34 points one ahead
of Shaun Insley with Steve Currie on 32..
Group 3 saw defending champion, Tony Fabish head the qualifying on 31 a
point ahead of Michael Pickens with anothjer point back to Scott Buckley.
David Kerr (ChCh) and Dundin's Gavin Wilkie missed the cut by two points and
now face the fifteen lap repercharge.

65TH N Z MIDGET TITLE

History is against a local driver winning this weekends (Feb 23/24) New
Zealand Midget Car Championship at the Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna however
the recent influx of top class cars and some exposure against International
drivers will help them says the President of the Christchurch Speedway
Association, Gary Jemmett.

"We have never had such strength in our local Midget car ranks and I think
that after what I saw at last weekends practice they are primed and ready to
cause an upset or two", he said.

The return of International Midget Car Racing to Christchurch two seasons
ago has gone a long way towards lifting the standard of both the local
"fleet" and the competitiveness of the racing.

There are fifteen North Island drivers entered, including all six of the
victorious New Zealand side which defeated the USA in the World Series last
month, and the task looks daunting, however many observers consider that it
is only a matter of time before a Christchurch driver wins the New Zealand
Midget Car Championship for the first time since Edwin Murray claimed the
event in 1968.

One to make huge strides in recent weeks has been Southbridge's David Kerr,
a former national Mini Sprint Champion has just taken possession of the
Esslinger powered Spike that was campaigned during the World Series by
American Speedway icon Dave Darland.
Kerr and his team have been frantically setting the car up to his liking.

Aaron Webb is another local driver whose chances must be rated following his
performances in his Ed Pink Ford powered Breka. Webb was the top performing
local in this years Internationals and has proven that he is undaunted in
competition against far more experienced rivals.

One with plenty of experience is the veteran of twenty two years of speedway
racing Dick Webb.
He has shown flashes of brilliance in his Hawk powered Aggressor however the
non arrival of some vital engine parts forced Webb to sit out the
internationals and he may be a little short of racing time.

Following his domination of the World Series, Aucklands Michael Pickens will
start as favourite in the Ed Pink powered Seamount Special, however several
of the other northern contingent will fancy their chances to win the
championship that was first contested in 1939.

Pickens has recently signed to compete in the  A.S.A Stockcar Series in the
USA, which is seen as a stepping stone to the lucrative NASCAR circuit, and
may have a limited involvement with Midget Car racing in the future.

Bryce Townsend, who captained this years New Zealand team has a wealth of
experience under his belt and has always performed well at Ruapuna. Townsend
has been in scintillating form at Western Springs this summer.

Another to shine at Western Springs has been former World 50 Lap Champion
Shayne Alach, who gained some momentum leading into this weekends racing
when he won a hotly contested feature race at Auckland last Saturday.

Another to have some momentum is Napiers Jimi Quin, who has just returned
after a fleeting visit to compete at the Copper Dirt Classic in Arizona,
USA. Quin adapted quickly to the Ruapuna track at his debut in January and
will be a strong contender.

The defending Champion, Tony Fabish (Te Awamutu) could have his work cut out
to retain his title, however the wily veteran has a habit of hitting form at
the right time.

The Championship has attracted 37 entrants, and qualifying races on Friday
night will determine 21 finalists, who will be joined by three others from
Saturday nights Repercharge race.

The Championship will be contested over two 20 Lap races to determine grid
positions, and a 25 lap final.

HUGE BOOST TO RANKS

Christchurch driver David Kerr has sprung a big surprise within Speedway
circles when his team purchased the Esslinger engined Midget car that was
campaigned during the recent World Series by top American driver Dave
Darland.

Kerr, a former New Zealand Mini Sprint Champion moved into the more powerful
Midget car class late last season, and has already shown considerable
promise this summer with two feature race wins under his belt.

The 350 horsepower Esslinger powered car was built in the USA especially for
Darland's New Zealand campaign and has run in just six meetings.

At its first appearance Darland won the World Derby at Western Springs,
Auckland.

Kerr put in around one hundred laps over the weekend trialing the car, and
will race it in this weekends (February 23 & 24) Accessman New Zealand
Midget Car Championship at the Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna.

"I couldn't get over how responsive the car was, and I felt so comfortable.
Its got some awesome gear and we'll need it. The competition will be very
strong this weekend, but I am confident that we will acquit ourselves well",
said Kerr.

The event has attracted 36 entries, including 15 from the North Island. All
of the New Zealand team who defeated the USA in the recent World Series have
entered with the exception of Shayne Alach.

Bargh Wins N.Z Solo Title

Andrew Bargh from the Hawkes Bay, won his first New Zealand Solo
championship, after he went through the event unbeaten at Powerbuilt
Speedway on Saturday evening. Christchurch teenager, Dale Finch, impressed
when claiming second place overall, with 13 points, two behind Bargh. The
defending title holder Jason Bunyan, of England surrendering his three year
hold on the national title after he finished in third place by defeating
Grant Tregoning of Christchurch in a run-off for third place after both
riders finished with twelve points.
Bargh was untroubled to collect five straight wins and always looked in
control of the meeting with most interest focusing on the minors. Bunyan
quest to retain his title started poorly when finishing second behind Finch
in the opening heat. Bunyan then dropped more points in heat 12 when he lead
the early laps of the race however he fell on the third lap which saw Bargh,
with USA based, Ricky Wells taking second place with Bunyan remounting to
finish in third place and claim a point.
Bargh was briefly headed in his next outing by local Andrew Aldridge by
Bargh powered cleared on the opening lap and opening up a clear head.
Aldridge, who won the NZ Under 21 title on Waitangi Day, saw his hopes of
doing the double end when looping his bike at the starting gate in his
second ride when clashing with Bunyan. Aldridge was excluded in the re-run.
Finch dropped his only points when finishing second to Bargh and then
Aldridge with the runner up placing the sixteen year-old best result to date
in his racing career.
Auckland driver Ross Linklater took out the other national title being raced
for when winning the NZ Three Quarter Midgetcar Grand Prix title. Linklater
finished second in his qualifying race, behind Adam Jobin (Auckland).
Linklater was out of the money in the first GP heat coming home in ninth
place after starting near the back of the 22 car field.
Linklater took out the chequered flag in the second heat leading home
Gisborne's James Tollison with Dwayne Todd (Hawkes Bay) third.
In the 20 lap final Linklater claimed the lead on the opening lap from New
Zealand champion, Ryan O'Conner with Adam Joblin, both from Auckland. Joblin
then came under attack from Lawrence Baker (Auckland) with the latter
claming third spot on lap eight. Baker then set about closing the gap on
O'Conner with Baker finally moving into second lap on the final lap with
O'Conner having to settle for third.
Rachel Melrose, who had to qualifying for the GP by winning the repercharge
was the first local driver home in eight place just ahead of Christchurch
Jeremy Beaton.
In the Canterbury sidecar championship Lionel Green and Bevan Nuttridge
headed home Lester Schroder and Steve Nolan by a single point with Brent
Tomkins and Josh Wilson third overall.

Next meeting TQ GP and M\C Champs

Two premier events that will both be staged at the Powerbuilt Speedway,
Ruapuna this Saturday night (Feb 10)  have attracted plenty of outside
entrants with big fields contesting the New Zealand Speedway Motor Cycle
Championship, and the New Zealand TQ Grand Prix.

With 24 entrants in the bikes, competition will be keen for the five
starting positions in the sudden death final. Current, and three time
champion Englishman Jason Bunyan will start as favourite to extend his run,
however Christchurchs Andrew Aldridge showed good form in winning Tuesday
nights New Zealand Under 21 Championship. The new generation of riders won't
have it all their own way with veterans Darren Wilson (Napier), Craig Ramsey
(Manawatu) and John Tuffley (Invercargill) all having the skill and
temperament to advance to the final.

Thirty Five TQ Midget drivers from all around the country have entered the
Grand Prix and Aucklands 16 year old wizz kid Ryan O'Connor will be keen to
cap off a weeks racing that has seen him win the national title, and take
out the prestigious TQ Masters event. With twenty visiting drivers entered
for the event the locals will be all out to reverse the recent North Island
domination, and southern hopes are likely to rest with the seasoned
campaigners james Thompson (Greymouth), Ryan Stone (ChCh) and current South
Island Champion Glen Campbell from Nelson.

Also on the programme is the Canterbury Sidecar Championship.

Young guns take out the TQ Masters

Two of the young competitors walked away with the major honours at
Powerbuilt Speedway on Tuesday evening. Local rider, Andrew Aldridge,
successfully retained the New Zealand Under 21 title while Auckland
teenager, Ryan O'Conner took out the Masters title in the Three Quarter
Midget class.
It was Aldridge's third and final win in the Under 21 title, as he will be
too old to contest the title next year. After going through his heats
unbeaten Aldridge went into the five rider final as the top scorer. The
final has to be restarted twice after Invercargill riders, Alex Cunningham
and Andrew Tree fell on the first lap and then Cunningham brought down
Aldridge in the restart.
The final restart again saw Palmerston North's, Andrew Bargh lead from the
gate with Aldridge second from Christchurch's Grant Tregoning. Aldridge
blasted by Bargh on the start finish line going to win by a handy margin
from Bargh and Tregoning. Aldridge will now being out to win the full New
Zealand title which will be staged at Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday.
O'Conner, who took out the New Zealand TQ title over the weekend at
Greymouth continuing his top form when winning the Masters title over three
heats. The sixteen year old came from near the back of the field to finish
second in the 26 car opening heat, which was won by Lawrence Baker
(Auckland). O'Conner then back this placing up with another second and then
a third in the final heat to win the title with 77 points, six clear by Ross
Linklater with Kylie-Ann Harris third to make it an Auckland clean sweep.
All the visiting drivers will be back in action on Saturday evening when the
NZ Grand Prix title is being contested.
Steve Duff and Aaron Webb were the respective winners of the Canterbury
championship, in the sprintcar and midget classes. The sprintcar feature was
marred by a spectacular crash after Duff and Nelson's Kevin Freeman's cars
touched coming down the front straight which left Freeman's car badly
damaged after a heavy roll.

Rookies wins N.Z TQ Title!!

 February 4, 2007

Sixteen year old Auckland Speedway driver Ryan O'Conner won the New Zealand
Three Quarter Midget Car Championship at Greymouth today in what was his
first attempt at claiming the title.

O'Conner led for most of the 20 Lap final to win from former national
champion Scott Joblin from Palmerston North and Napier driver Craig Todd.

O'Conner is a rookie driver in the TQ class after having competed in the
Quarter Midget class for five years.

Christchurch's Ryan Stone qualified in eighth place for the final and had
moved up several positions before the engine in his car blew.

O'Conner will now start as a favourite for Tuesday nights T.Q Masters which
will be held at the Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna.

Michael Pickens dominates at Powerbuilt

Auckland Midget Car driver, Michael Pickens, was the standout driver at
Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday evening.
The 24 year old set the fastest qualifying time for the Reworks $50,000
Southern 50, and then won the first of two test match races between the USA
and New Zealand. The former New Zealand champion then took out the 50 lap
feature, after leading all but one of the laps, with American Brad Kuhn
leading briefly, before Pickens regained the lead going on to take the
chequered flag to secure the $7,000 winners purse.
Kuhn was second with follow countryman, Dave Darland third. This was the
Aucklander's second 50 lap feature win in a week after taking out the World
50 Lap title in Auckland the previous Saturday. Pickens was the fastest
driver all night and in the feature lead out from the green flag with Kuhn
getting past coming out of turn two on lap three. Within a lap the Kiwi was
back in front and started building a lead as Kuhn has his hands full with
first Shaun Insley and follow NZ test member Shane Alach with both passing
the American by lap seven.
By lap twenty Pickens was cutting his way passed lapped traffic with Kuhn
regaining third place when getting by Alach on lap 26 and then moving into
second place nine lap later, with the field closing up with seven laps to
run after the caution light come on.
At the restart Pickens opened up a race winning margin with Darland passing
Insley on the final lap to claim the final spot on the rostrum, with Insley
fourth with members of the NZ test side, Graham Standring, Bryce Townsend
and Brad Mosen, filling the next three places. Mosen effect was impressive
after a poor time trial saw the nineteen year-old having to start the race
from grid 21. Aaron Webb was the first Christchurch driver home in a
creditable tenth place.
New Zealand jumped out to a clear lead in the test series after winning the
fifth test by a clear margin, 49 points to 28,   then narrowly taking out
the sixth test 40 to 37. The home side now lead the series by 4 tests to 2,
(259 points to 207 on aggregate) with the final tests to be raced in
Auckland. The New Zealand side totally dominated the fifth test with Pickens
taking the lead on lap two from Mosen who then racing side by side with his
captain, Townsend to block Kuhn and Hatton with the American's not able to
pass. Kuhn took out the sixth test with Pickens second from Hatton with
Townsend and Mosen in fourth and fifth place, which secured enough points
for the home victory.
American Ricky Logan was the star in the sprintcar events finishing second
to Nelson's Kevin Freeman in the opening event and then brought his
Accessman car home in first place in his other two races. Three quarter
midget drives had their last outing before heading over to contest the New
Zealand title at Greymouth next weekend with both Michael Moulin and Ryan
Stone showing good form with Stone taking out the feature. Phillippa Melrose
finished third in the second heat and then was involved in a spectacular
crash in the next heat when flipping and rolling her car down the back
straight. Melrose was taken to hospital with a suspected shoulder injury.
In the modified sprint class rookie Matt Honeywell took out two wins
including the feature with Jesse Jamieson making it a clean sweep in the ¼
midget division.

MIDGET MAGIC AT RUAPUNA!!

Christchurch,NZ

Powerbuilt Speedway hosted some of the best midget car drivers in the world
on Thursday evening and with that, a display of Midget car racing perhaps
not seen in Christchurch for several decades.
The six man United States team just edged out their New Zealand rivals by 40
points to 38 to level the six test series at two all. The home team leads by
170 to 142 on aggregate.
The 12 lap test race was contested at a hectic pace with New Zealand holding
the early advantage with 19 year old Auckland driver Brad Mosen being pushed
hard by American Cory Kruseman, until Mosen went slightly wide exiting
Prison Bend, allowing the American ace to take the lead with four laps to
run. Kruseman went on to win the race in a record time for 12 laps of
3:05.04 minutes smashing the old mark by over four seconds. Mosen pushed the
American all the way to the finish line with Danny Stratton (USA) just
holding out Michael Pickens(NZ) for third place.
In the Reworks International series such was the quality of the field that
no driver secured more than one win for the night from the seven races.
Competition was tight for places in the 25 car 25 lap feature, and several
more fancied drivers had to rely on provisional starting places to secure
their spot on the grid.
In the heats Shaun Insley, Pickens, Bryce Townsend, Brad Loyet(USA) and Dave
Darland all recorded wins with local driver David Kerr driving a great race
to hold out Mosen for second place in the fifth heat. Stratton took out the
semi main form Kruseman and NZ test member, Graham Standring.
In the 25 lap feature Brad Kuhn(USA), making his debut on the Powerbuilt
track, settled behind Townsend and Darland on the early laps and then in a
space of a lap the 25 year old passed his countryman and then powered by the
NZ test captain coming out of the Prison Bend. Kuhn, a two time American
National Midget Driver of the Year winner, then set a blistering pace and
was into lapped traffic at the mid point of the race. Townsend and Darland
were fighting it out for second place with both cars locked together for
almost the entire race and Mosen claimed third place with two laps
remaining. Kuhn took the chequered flag by less than a second, from Darland
with the fast finishing Mosen holding out Townsend in a drag to the
chequered flag. Loyet was fifth with Kruseman cutting his way from grid 19
to finish sixth with all 25 starters finishing the race.
All the drivers will be back in action at Ruapuna on Saturday evening when
the final two tests will be held with the feature event that staging of the
Southern 50 Lapper which has $50,000 prize money on offer.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

One of the most highly rated drivers on the American Sprintcar scene,

Ricky   Logan will make a surprise appearance at the Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna

tomorrow night. (Thursday January 25)

Logan raced in the International Series at Auckland and Powerbuilt in
December and has been touring around New Zealand since then, competing at
Sprintcar races at Auckland and Palmerston North on a freelance basis. At
one outing at the Palmerston North track he set the fastest lap time in
 that tracks 76 year history.
The 35 year old native of Little Rock, Arkansas is among the front runners
at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Iowa, and he will make a guest appearance
at the wheel of the Accessman Schnee which is owned by Ashburton Dairy
 farmer Gerard Ness.

His appearance in the Sprintcar ranks for the night will be an added bonus,
with the main feature of the night being the fourth round of the $190,000
Reworks World Midget Car Test Series between the U.S.A and New Zealand.

KIWIS LEAD MIDGET SERIES

The New Zealand midget team fought back from a 2 point deficit in the test
race series to take a dominant lead after Saturday nights two test races at
Western Springs Speedway.

The American team had won the first match by 40 to 38, however Saturday
nights two races both resulted in wins by 47-31 to the Kiwis

The New Zealanders now lead the US in the series by 30 points.

The next test race takes place on Thursday 25th January at Powerbuilt
Speedway in Christchurch.

Cory Kruseman (USA) and Shayne Alach (NZ) lead their respective teams points
tallys with 34 and 29 respectively.

Saturday nights show at the Springs saw Aucklands Michael Pickens win the 50
Lap Midget Car World Championship from Americans Scott Hatton and Brad Kuhn.

The Series now moves to the Powerbuilt Speedway at Ruapuna Christchurch with
events on Thursday January 25 and Saturday January 27.

Saturday nights show at Powerbuilt features the Southern 50, which pays a
whopping $50,000 in prizemoney and awards, making it the richest motorsport
event to be held in the South Island this year.

BRCE TOWNSEND-NZ MIDGET CAPTAIN

Former World 50 Lap Midget Car Champion Bryce Townsend from Auckland has
been selected to captain the New Zealand team for the forthcoming World
Series against the United States of America.

The Series kicks off at Auckland's Western Springs with matches on Thursday
January 18 and Saturday January 20th before heading to the Powerbuilt
Speedway at Ruapuna on Thursday January 25 and Saturday January 27.

Townsend has been a regular visitor to Ruapuna for several years, and he
will lead the national side in the six meeting series.

He will be joined by former New Zealand Champions Graham Standring and
Michael Pickens along with rising star Brad Mosen and the vastly experienced
duo of Lance Beale and Shayne Alach.

Townsend expects a tough battle with the Americans in the series which has
$190,000 (one hundred and ninety thousand dollars) at stake, particularly as
they are all coming to New Zealand after competing in last weekends five
night Chili Bowl Series that is contested on a 400 metre indoor track in
Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"They'll be race fit, but the whole New Zealand side enjoy running at the
Powerbuilt track. There is plenty of room to run there, but they've got just
about the best of the best from the states headed down for the series," said
Townsend.

The visiting side will be led by Scott Hatton from Illinois, who won last
years World Series. Hatton also won last seasons Southern 50 at Powerbuilt
Speedway. Danny Stratton who took out the World 50 Lap Championship at
Auckland last summer is also returning for the series.

The American side is stacked with class and making his Christchurch debut
will be the two times American Midget car champion Dave Darland, who is one
of the winningest drivers in the long history of the prestigious United
States Auto Club.

Also making their first trip to the South Island will be the highly rated
Cory Kruseman, Brad Kuhn and Brad Loyet.

The versatile Kruseman is a two time winner of the Chili Bowl Midget Car
title, an event which attracts over two hundred entries from all facets of
motor sport, and he is expected to enjoy the wide open spaces offered at the
Ruapuna track.

Kuhn is a two time winner of the American National Midget Car Driver of the
Year Award, while the 19 year old Loyet finished seventh in last years
U.S.A.C national Championship.

In addition to the test matches, the visiting drivers will take on a
resurgent South Island contingent in the Southern 50 on January 27, which
with $50,000 in stake money and awards, making it the South Islands richest
paying motor sport event.

Results January 6th

The 50th anniversary of Three Quarter Midgetcar racing in Christchurch was
celebrated over the weekend and ended fittingly at Powerbuilt Speedway on
Saturday evening when less than a second separated the first three cars home
in the 20 lap Anniversary Trophy feature race.
It was two of the most experienced drivers in the field, Michael Moulin and
Ryan Stone, who were locked in a great dice over final quarter of the race.
Moulin just held out Stone by less that a car length (0.07 seconds) in the
race to the chequered flag with Ben Tiplady in third place. Tiplady took the
lead on the third lap and held the lead with just two laps to run when both
Moulin and Stone passed coming out of the Town Bend with Stone then closing
in on Moulin. On the final Stone tried to pass Moulin on the outside of the
Town Bend with Moulin just managing to throw off the challenge. Stone then
tried to cut inside his rival coming out of the final turn as the two car
were locked together going over the finish line. Tiplady was less then a
half a second behind Stone with Karl Glover fourth and Rachel Melrose fifth.
In the three heats Stone claimed a second and two wins with the other win
going to Philippa Melrose who also finished second to Stone in heat 3.
Earlier in the evening several former TQ drivers took to the track in
vintage racing machinery with Kevin Stephens impressing when reeling off lap
time of under 20 seconds while Selwyn Burt, who first took to the track way
back in the summer of 1957-58 also took to the track.
English rider, Jason Bunyan, won four of his six starts on the Young Gun
Series, finishing second to Andrew Bargh (Hastings) and local Andrew
Aldridge in his other two races. Aldridge, the current NZ Under 21 champion
provided Bunyan with the most competition with Bunyan finishing with 28
points, four ahead of Aldridge with Invercargill's Andrew Tree third overall
on 17.
After a hectic week of racing at other venues a somewhat depleted field of
seven entrants  battled out the South Island Sidecar Challenge which was won
by the pairing of Lester Schroeder (Blenheim) and his local passenger, Bevan
Nuttridge. This duo picked up a win and a second placing in the two heats
before heading home  Christchurch's Brent Tomkins/Arnie Marshall and Grant
Lightfoot/Darryl Crack(Invercargill) in the final.
Glen Sole impressed in the Modifield Sprint section, claiming a second
placing in heat two before backing this up with a good win in the feature
when having to work hard to hold out the fast finishing Melrose sister's,
Rachel and Philippa.
In the Kiwi Kid divisions Anthony Knowles and Jessey Jamieson took out their
respective Canterbury titles.

Back for another skid!!

He might be pushing eighty years of age but Southbridge identity Selwyn Burt
says that he can't wait to have another 'skid ' around the Ruapuna Speedway
this Saturday night . (January 6)

Selwyn was one of the stars of TQ racing at the old Aranui Speedway during
the late fifties, and then the early sixties at Ruapuna and this weekend
Speedway enthusiasts and past competitors will get together to celebrate
fifty seasons of TQ racing in Christchurch.

"They were pretty wild days but we didn't know any better. The cars were all
even because most of us used the J.A.P 500cc engines. If you wanted to get
into the prize money you just drove harder", he said.

"Some nights if things went OK you could take home £20. It was damn good
money but you had to expect the odd scrape. The cars had no roll cages or
roll bars then and just skinny tyres. If you got into trouble you just slid
down into the cockpit a bit further".

On Saturday night as part of the Celebrations a special 50th Anniversary
Trophy will be at stake in the TQ feature and prior to that there will be a
demonstration run for some old restored TQ's. Selwyn will take part in this
at the wheel of the car that he raced at Aranui in 1958.

The red number five car has been painstakingly restored by Russell Liddell
and Selwyn gets a few chances to have a drive out at Ellesmere, but it is at
Ruapuna where his appearance will have a special meaning.

"We used to sacrifice a lot for our speedway. I even worked out there one
Christmas Day. It's a pity that the track wasn't cinders and I wasn't twenty
years younger"!

Young Guns Solo Spectacular!!

The days where New Zealand could boost some of the best Speedway riders in
the world may be long gone, but Gary Jemmett, President of the Christchurch
Speedway Association says that the Elf Oils Young Guns Series which competes
at Powerbuilt Ruapuna Speedway this Saturday night (January 6) is one of the
best things to happen for local talent.

"The heart of Solo racing in this country consists of the young fellows.
Last years New Zealand Under 21 title produced some of the best racing we've
seen in years from the bikes and with five of the stars from that meeting
being part of the series its a great chance to blood them for the big
time",said Mr Jemmett.

The series is the brainchild of Auckland promoter John McCallum who has for
this year gone away from a troupe of overseas riders in favour of New
Zealand riders, along with three times and current New Zealand Champion
Jason Bunyan.

Bunyan, an Englishman from Milton Keynes has made New Zealand his second
home and he will ensure that his young protegees work hard for their share
of the prize money.

"Jason is very keen to see young kiwis get their chance on the world stage,
as is  the former Kiwi International rider Tony Briggs who is also
travelling with the series in his capacity as Tour Coach".

Two of the riders in the Series, Christchurch's Andrew Aldridge and Andy
Bargh from Hastings both rode in Britain last year. Aldridge, the current
New Zealand under 21 Champion has recently returned from a stint riding in
the Ivan Mauger Gold Helmet Series in Australia.

Invercargill riders Andrew Tree and Alex Cunningham, along with
Featherston's Jade Mudgeway make up the rest of the riders in the series.

"We have specifically tailored Saturdays show around the bikes. The big
track should be in great order and we have dropped the Sprintcars and
Midgets for the night', said Jemmett.

Also on the programme is the South Island Sidecar Challenge featuring the
twelve top pairings and a special TQ Anniversary Trophy Race, in celebration
of fifty years of TQ racing in Christchurch

Farr to good in classic!!

Robbie Farr, of Australia, proved to be too good for the classy
international sprintcar field at the  Powerbuilt Speedway in Christchurch on
Saturday evening when he took out the $20,000 Powerbuilt International
Classic.
The evenings racing did not start well for the Sydney based driver when the
motor on his Scorpion Racing Concut Maxim suffered terminal problems in the
opening heat. Team owner, Steve Duff, of Christchurch, who was set to race
in heat two, climbed out of his Jack Daniels J&J , and turned the car over
to Farr for the rest of the programme.
Heat one started in spectacular fashion when local driver, Greg Clemence in
the RBR  Maxim, crashed his machine heavily down the back straight after
riding a wheel on the opening lap. Clemence climbed unhurt out of his badly
damaged car which had flipped  50 metres down track. Auckland's Jamie
McDonald took out the restart from American, Ricky Logan and Carl Wilson
(Auckland). Heat two also started with a crash on the opening lap when the
defending Classic titleholder, Craig Dollansky of the USA in the Salter
Cartage Maxim, clipped Aucklander Brad Mosen in the Dickies Maxim as the
field hurtled into the first turn. Dollansky's  car rolled into the concrete
safety fence and sustained considerable damage. Feverish activity in the
pits by the Salter Motorsport crew saw the car repaired and able to take the
grid in Dollansky's next heat.
Aussie Trevor Green in the Powerbuilt Maxim secured heat two after a great
battle with Farr, who finished in second place, while Hamilton's Dean
Brindle, in another of the Salter Motorsport Maxims came home in third.
Eight time New Zealand Champion Allan Wakeling in the Koken Tools J&J proved
to be too good in the third heat, with young Christchurch driver Glen
Everett putting up a great drive to finish second in front of Green.
The final heat showed that all the hard work in the pits had not been in
vain as Dollansky powered away to take a handy lead, however Farr had now
adapted to 'his new ride' and started whittling away at the Americans lead.
Farr then dug deep on the final lap and blasted around Dollansky to take out
the win, with current New Zealand Champion Kerry Jones third.
The top six drivers then took part in the pole shuffle which ended up as a
duel between the two Australians who treated the big crowd to a great
display of racing, with Farr eventually taking it out and getting the choice
of starting position for the thirty lap feature.
Green made an impressive start to the race, getting the jump on his
compatriot. Farr then managed to get his nose in front briefly before Green
covered that move to regain the front position.
American Ricky Logan spun on the third lap, bringing out a yellow . He was
able to restart off the back of the field, however at this point Farr took
over the lead when Green retired his car onto the infield with a tyre
bleeder problem.
From the restart Farr totally dominated and was into lapped traffic by lap
eight. The main interest swung back to the battle for the minor placings
with Wakeling and Brindle swapping second placing several times. Wakeling
eventually gained control of that, and was starting to hunt down Farr, but
the Australian was maneuvering through the traffic with great skill.
Kerry Jones came into the reckoning after a clash in heavy traffic saw
Brindle, and Michael Pickens in the Accessman Schnee both forced out of the
race.
Farr went on to win from the kiwi legends Wakeling and Jones, while the
Americans Logan and Dollansky rounded out the top five.
In a post race interview Farr revealed that there was little left of his
right rear tyre and that he was thankful that the race finished when it did.
"We just love getting over to Powerbuilt for the Classic. It's a great race,
and the track was awesome tonight. I knew that Wakeling was close, but I was
confident that we could bring the Jack Daniels car home for Steve Duff."

David Kerr had his best return since moving into the midget ranks winning
two races, including the feature, and finishing his other race in second
place. Ray Baughan took out a heat win and then trailed Kerr home in the
feature as well as a heat.
Philippa Melrose took out the feature wins in both the Modified Sprint and
Three Quarter Midget classes with the teenager busy night seeing her claim
another win and two thirds in the TQ class,  as well as a second placed
behind her elder sister in one of the modified sprint heats.

Wako's Lap Record under threat!!

Allan Wakeling's long standing lap record at the Powerbuilt Speedway,
Ruapuna will come under threat this Saturday night (Dec 16), when arguably
the most talent packed field of Sprintcar competitors to race in
Christchurch will take part in the $20,000 Powerbuilt Classic.

Heading the list of entrants, and red hot favourite to repeat his Classic
win from last season, is American Craig Dollansky who will drive for the
Auckland based Ron Salter Motorsport team with a car that has been fitted up
to Dollansky's specifications.

Salter has spared no expense in providing Dollansky with the best gear
available, including a full 820 horsepower Outlaw specification engine.

Dollansky recently capped off his most successful season yet, finishing
second in the World of Outlaws Series which is fought out over seventy races
throughout the U.S.A.

Another American, Ricky Logan will make his third appearance at Ruapuna, and
like Dollansky he is coming off a very successful campaign. Two weeks ago he
recorded the fastes ever lap time at Palmerston North Speedway and last
weekend he finished second in the Western Springs Sprintcar Classic.

Logan is keen to make an impression at Ruapuna, a track that he rates
highly.

"It's got lot's of room and offers a couple of lines. I've not had much luck
down here in the past, but that's gonna change!"

Two of Australia's top drivers in Robbie Farr and Trevor Green will also
return to Ruapuna for the race.

Farr is one of just three drivers to have secured Australian Championship
victories in both Midgets and Sprintcars. Green competed up in the USA last
winter and earlier this year he won the Gold Cup at Ruapuna.

Saturday nights show doubles as a qualifying round for the World Sprintcar
Challenge which will be held at Knoxville, Iowa next August and a very
strong North Island contingent will cross the strait to take on the
internationals, and local drivers.

Apart from fielding a car for Dollansky, Aucklander Ron Salter will field
three other cars in the event for current New Zealand Champion Kerry Jones,
the highly rated Dean Brindle and Salter himself.

Jones has struck success at Ruapuna many times during his illustrious
career, as has his long time arch rival Allan Wakeling.

Wakeling, who has eight New Zealand titles to his credit acknowledges that
in such illustrious company his lap record of 12.687 seconds is under threat
but he says that the New Zealand challenge should not be under estimated.

"Being up against the overseas drivers brings out the best in us, and guys
like Jonsey, Duffy (Steve Duff) and myself know our way around Ruapuna
pretty well."

The stern North Island challenge does not stop at Wakeling and Salter's
"Dream team", with six other drivers coming south to fight out the honours
including Jamie McDonald who is the current number two rated driver in New
Zealand, Carl Wilson, Tommy Rusher and Greg Pickerill.

There will also be considerable interest in the performance of the world
rated Midget car drivers from Auckland Michael Pickens and Brad Mosen.

Both will compete in Christchurch cars on Saturday with Pickens in the
Gerard Ness owned Schnee, while Mosen will make his Sprintcar debut in the
Dickies Maxim for Scorpion Racing.

Veteran driver Steve Duff will head the South Island contingent. Duff
purchased a late model J & J car for this season and took in several
meetings in Sydney prior to the local season starting up. His win in the
feature race at Ruapuna's opening night signaled his intention to dominate
the Christchurch Sprintcar scene this summer.

Unfortunately the South Island drivers lead up to the event has been
thwarted by poor weather, with two of the four scheduled meetings to date
having been washed out.

INTERNATIONAL SPRINTCAR SERIES NEWS

American drivers dominated the opening round of the International Sprintcar
Series when they cleaned up in the thirty lap feature at Western Springs
Speedway, Auckland last night (December 10).

Indiana's Joey Saldana hit the front when he got by his fellow countryman
Craig Dollansky on the 20th lap. Saldana went on to win.

Another American, Ricky Logan then passed Dollansky on lap 26 of the thirty
lap race to secure second.

Australian Robbie Farr was fourth with Jamie McDonald the first kiwi home in
  fifth.

The series moves on to Powerbuilt Speedway at Ruapuna this Saturday night
(December 16) when the $20,000 powerbuilt Classic will be contested.

Saldana has to return home to the USA to meet commitments over there, and
his place will be taken by a top Australian driver, Trevor Green who won the
Gold Cup event at Ruapuna last summer.

TOP MIDGET DRIVERS FOR SPRINTCAR CHALLENGE

Two of New Zealands top Midget car drivers Michael Pickens and Brad Mosen
are moving up from their 350 horsepower four cylinder powered Midget cars to
800 horsepower V8 Sprintcars  for  the prestigious $20000 Powerbuilt
Classic, to be held at Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna on December 16.

Pickens, a former New Zealand Midget car champion will be driving the Schnee
chassied car owned by Ashburton farmer Gerard Ness, while Mosen will drive
the Dickies Maxim for Christchurch based Scorpion Racing.

While the Powerbuilt Classic will be Mosen's Sprintcar debut, Pickens has
recently driven Ness's machine at Bay Park where he won the feature race.

Both Mosen and Pickens have considerable experience racing Midget cars in
the USA, and the latter recently secured a drive in the A.S.A Stockcar
Series for the next American season. (A.S.A- American Speed Association is a
stepping stone to the lucrative NASCAR Series)

"Brad and Michael are both very talented drivers, and this is sure to give
them more versatility by running the winged V8 Sprintcars. It will be a
baptism of fire but they both have enough natural ability to be real
contenders to take out the Classic,"said promoter Dave Stewart.

The race has already attracted considerable driver interest with two
Americans (defending champion Craig Dollansky, and Ricky Logan), two
Australians (Trevor Green and Robbie Farr) and ten North Islanders entered.

World Series Sprintcars!!!

The Powerbuilt Sprintcar Classic to be held at Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna
on December 16 has been confirmed as one of four events to act as a
qualifying race for the World Sprintcar Challenge to be held at Knoxville
Raceway, Iowa in the USA next August.

Promoter Dave Stewart said that the Powerbuilt Classic was seen as a truly
international event by the American organisers with drivers from the USA and
Australia facing a strong contingent of New Zealanders.

"The Powerbuilt Classic will be a springboard for any drivers wanting to
compete at Knoxville next August," he added.

Aucklander Jamie McDonald qualified from the Ruapuna event last year and
took up the opportunity to compete at Knoxville, and several other New
Zealand drivers have intimated that they will compete here specifically to
gain an entry for the $10000 (US) to win final.

"A real advantage of the World Challenge is that for Americans to race in
the final, they need to travel offshore to do it. We've got Craig Dollansky
and Ricky Logan coming down here from the states for that reason."

Stewart added that "Powerbuilt Speedway is a perfect venue for hard out V8
Sprintcar racing and that's why the event is here."

Other qualifying race venues are Warrnambool ( Australia), Bay Park, (Mount
Maunganui) and Edmonton (Canada).

A WEEK LATE BUT RACING ALL GO!

 POWERBUILT SPEEDWAY 25 NOVEMBER

Large fields were the feature of the opening meeting of the season at
Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday evening with a big number of 'rookie'
competitors appearing in each of the classes.
The resurgent midget car class saw seventeen cars take to the track with all
races keenly contested.
Aaron Webb at the wheel of his recently acquired Ed Pink Ford powered car
won both of his heats before going on to take out the feature from Dick
Webb. Aaron Webb lead the feature from the opening lap but was pressed all
the way by his namesake with both cars never more than two car lengths apart
over the entire twenty-five laps. Over the closing laps Dick Webb twice
managed to nose his car in front but Aaron Webb was equal to the task and
regained the lead to take the chequered flag narrowly with Gary Chadwick
third. New comers to the midget car ranks, Scott Millar and Matt Milne both
took out a third placing each in the heats.
In the sprintcar class Steve Duff and Kevin Freeman stood out with Duff
winning three races in his Jack Daniels 07 car, including the feature and
finishing second behind Freeman in the opening race, with Freeman in the
Accessman Big Max following Duff home in the other three races.
The modified sprint numbers have also increased over the winter break. The
even standard of competition was best demonstrated with nine different
drivers featuring in the first three home of the four races run. Rachel
Melrose claimed two wins including the feature with other winners being
William Gardiner and Rob Campbell.
Melrose also featured in the three-quarter midget class with a second and
two thirds placing with Melrose's younger sister, Phillipa winning the
opening two races. Ryan Stone also had a successful meeting with a top three
placing in all four races, winning the third race before having to settle
for second place in the feature behind Ricky Brett.
The bike classes were missing from the racing action as they had all headed
south to Invercargill to race in the Burt Munro Challenge event.

Pickens running Sprint car at Powerbuilt

One of New Zealand's most promising motor sport stars, Michael Pickens has
been confirmed as a starter for this Friday nights (Nov 17) opening Meeting
at the Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna.

Pickens, who has over recent years been the dominant force in Midget car
racing at Auckland's Western Springs Speedway, has recently signed up for a
ride in the American Speed Association (ASA) Stock car series which is seen
as a stepping stone to the lucrative NASCAR series, and while he is well
known to Christchurch fans as a Midget car driver, he will be competing in
the V8 Sprintcar class on Friday night.

"Michael see's that Sprintcars will very much enhance his versatility, and
he is recognized as one of our brightest motor sport prospects", said
promoter Dave Stewart.

"He spent our winter racing up in the states and again recorded some
terrific results."

Pickens will drive the Accessman Schnee chassied car that Gerard Ness from
Ashburton campaigns.

Several other top Auckland drivers will make the trip south to compete on
Friday in the Midget car class with former World 50 Lap Champion Bryce
Townsend, current NZ #2  Shaun Insley, Scott Buckley and Simon Longdill
entered, while Nelson driver Nevil Basalaj, who bases his racing campaign at
Western Springs is also traveling to Christchurch for the meeting.

"We will also celebrate Canterbury Anniversary Day with a huge Fireworks
Display, that I know will blow peoples mind's", said Stewart.

"It will be a terrific show, with a big number of competitors from all over
the country headed to Powerbuilt for the night".

Final Practise.(Dress Rehersal)

WoW!!! The final practice for the 2006-7 season at Powerbuilt Speedway on
Saturday night (Nov 4) certainly underlined the fact that we are in for a
heck of a season.

The Midget cars stole the show with some great battles, which looked more
like a deciding race in a national title than a rehearsal.

Thirteen Midget cars fronted and while Dick Webb in the RBR Agressor/Hawk
was perhaps the pick of the bunch, Ray Baughan in his Ford Gaerte, Kirk
Hawkins in the car driven last season by American Danny Stratton, Aaron Webb
in the ex Seamount Racing Ed Pink Ford and Gary Chadwick in his Ford were
all super fast!

Look out for x Mini Sprint driver Scott Millar...he showed plenty of pace
and a smooth style that will make him a force to be reckoned with.

The track was in great nick and all the other classes showed plenty of depth
among the competitors present to have old timers remarking that this was
perhaps the best 'warm up' to a season that they could remember.

Remember ...OPENING NIGHT  FRIDAY NOVEMBER 17

the dirt starts flying at 7....BRING IT ON!

Kevin Freeman - in it for the longhaul!

Some reckon that Nelson Sprintcar driver Kevin Freeman must be mad and given
escalating fuel and travel costs they might just be onto something.
At least twelve times a year he loads up his Accessman Maxim Sprintcar and
makes the 900 kilometre return trip to the Powerbuilt Speedway in
Christchurch.
He pretty much drives past the gates of his local track at Nelson but they
don't regularly run Sprintcars, so often the long haul is made with just the
radio in his truck for company.
Freeman has bounced his way around the tracks of New Zealand for close on
twenty one years having spent ten years as a Sidecar passenger and then
another six year stint driving Midgets, but it is the fire breathing V8
Sprintcars that deliver Freeman's racing buzz.
"I am too old to hang off the Sidecars and to be fair a Sprintcar is a much
more financially viable deal for me than Midgets."
But why leave Stockcar mad Nelson almost every weekend in the summer to race
sprintcars?
"Stockcars just don't do it for me. Never have.never will. I grew up in
Christchurch watching Midgets and Sprintcars every weekend. The haul, and
expense are just a small price to pay when you can drive really fast
racecars."
Early in 2005 Freeman's racing endeavors received a boost when Accessman
started sponsoring him.
"I was approached by a couple of guys in the pits at Ruapuna one night who
said that they had a sponsor keen to get into speedway. I have been grateful
for that introduction, and Accessman are great to race for. Having my crew
based in Christchurch is also a great boost. KB (Kevin Burt), Bob (Bob
Batt), Bryce (Bryce Batt) and Head (Richard Freeman) slave away and are
getting pretty good at replacing front ends!"
Freeman's dedication to Sprintcar racing isn't just to Powerbuilt Speedway.
Dollars to donuts if there is a Sprintcar race in the South Island the
Accessman # 75 will be there.
"I just love those country tracks. Some guys couldn't care less about them
but it's a lot of fun having a skid in front of people who may never have
seen the Sprinters race. Who knows what budding Steve Kinser is lurking out
in the boondocks?"

SPEEDWAY-INTERNATIONAL SPRINTCAR EVENT FOR CHRISTCHURCH

Powerbuilt Speedway at Ruapuna will host the final of a lucrative two
meeting International Sprintcar Series to be held in December.

Western Springs will host the first round on December 9, while the final
will happen a week later on December 16 at Ruapuna when the Powerbuilt
Classic will be held with $20,000 in prizemoney up for grabs.

Promoter Dave Stewart has confirmed that the winner of last years Powerbuilt
Classic, American Craig Dollansky will return for the event, and will be
joined by another driver from the American Outlaw circuits, and two
Australians.

With just one round of the World of Outlaws Series in America to go,
Dollansky is currently in second place after a nine month long battle in the
points race with leader Donny Shatz.

"We have a few options available to us as far as drivers go and will be able
to announce soon which other high profile drivers are headed to New Zealand
for the Series,"said Stewart, who also anticipates that interest from North
Island drivers in the Ruapuna event will be high.

"The guys just love getting down south, and Powerbuilt Speedway is ideal for
hard out Sprintcar racing. Last years Powerbuilt Classic was a tremendous
event and we intend to make it even bigger and better this year."

CURTAIN FALLS ON POWERBUILTSPEEDWAY SEASON

The final checkered flag dropped on Saturday evening to bring an end to
another season's racing at Powerbuilt Speedway which has seen a host of
international and national competitors racing over the summer months.
Crashes have always been a hallmark of speedway racing and on Saturday
evening local driver Ray Baughan was involved in one of the most spectacular
crashes in recent seasons as he was trying to secure second place in the
midgetcar feature.
If Baughan had been competing in the gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games he
would have won the gold scoring top points for the degree of
difficulty.Nelson's Nevil Basalaj had already won the race with Baughan
trying to pass John Sylvester coming down the final straight to claim second
place. Baughan's car climbed the camber on the bottom of the safety fence
sending the car into a wide ride. The car was airborne over the start-finish
line as it barrel rolled violently a dozen times down the straight finally
coming to rest eighty metres down the track.
Such was the standard of Baughan's safety equipment and the construction of
his safety cage he was quickly out of his car and later was able to walk
unaided from the St John's room to the ambulance take took him to hospital
for a check up. Basalaj won all three midgetcar events and was the ideal
build-up has he heads north to contest the New Zealand title next weekend.
Racing was even in the sprintcar field with Nelson's Kevin Freeman winning
two races including the feature with the other race going to Jeanette Boyle,
her first ever win. Kevin Clive, who is considering retiring, chased Freeman
hard in the feature to finish in second place.
Philippa Melrose also created her own piece of history when winning back to
back feature races in two different classes. Melrose took out the Modified
Sprints feature from team-mates Grant Dacombe and Rachel Melrose. The
Melrose sisters then immediately jumped into their Three Quarter midgetcars
with Philippa then holding out her elder sibling, with Ryan Stone third.
Only a relegation in the feature prevented Blair Low from winning all three
Mini Sprint races with Matt Phillips awarded the win in the feature.
Solo rider Andrew Aldridge finished the season has he has started dominating
his racing again going through the meeting unbeaten. Once in front Aldridge,
the NZ Under 21 champion controlled the racing with Dale Finch and Kody
Tocher having a great battle all night for the minor placings. Lionel Green
and passenger Aaron Ray were unbeaten in the sidecar ranks.
Jesse Wright took out all three races in the car class for Kiwi Kids with
Jenny Schafer and Konner McCluskey-Young winning in the bike division.

EX STOCK CAR CHAMP CONFIRMS ENTRY TO SPRINT CAR TITLE!

North Island Stockcar ace Rodney Wood this morning confirmed his entry for
this weekends (March 10 & 11) New Zealand Sprintcar Championship to be held
at Powerbuilt Speedway, Ruapuna.

Wood, one of the most accomplished Super Stock drivers on the tough northern
scene recently purchased a full blown World of Outlaw car from top ranked
American driver Danny Lasoski, and has been busy clocking up races to ensure
his eligibility for this weekends races.

The Mopar powered car is probably the latest model machine entered in the
championship, and in recent weeks Wood has impressed sprintcar stalwarts
with how well he has acquitted himself.

"We had a few issues early in the week that needed sorting, and for a while
it looked like we would have to pull our entry, but now that we have that
under control I can't wait", said Wood, who acknowledges that it has been a
steep learning curve going from the 'crash and bash'world of stockcar racing
to the outright speed of the Sprintcars.

Another legend from the North Island 'Stockcar'tracks, two time New Zealand
Saloon Car Champion "Skinny"Colson from New Plymouth is another well known
competitor set to make his first racing appearance at Powerbuilt Speedway.

Thirty drivers have entered the event, which gets underway on Friday night
with qualifying races.

This is the largest ever number of sprintcar drivers to compete in the 800
horsepower V8 engined dirt track "weapons" at Powerbuilt and with only
eighteen places available for Saturday nights finals competition is sure to
be keen.

HATTON WINS SOUTHERN 50 LAPPER!

Powerbuilt Speedway, Christchurch New Zealand

American driver Scott Hatton took out the $10,000 winners cheque for the
Southern 50 Lap Midget car feature at Powerbuilt Speedway on Saturday after
finishing just over a car length in front of  a fast finishing Brad Mosen,
of Auckland, with Australian Mark Brown in third place. It was eighteen age
old Mosen who brought the crowd to their feet as with three laps to go he
passed Danny Stratton (USA) to move into third place and then raced side by
side with Brown. In the final lap Mosen blasted around the outside of the
Australian on the back straight on the final lap. With Hatton controlling
the low line Mosen tried to blast his car around the outside of the American
but Hatton held off the young Kiwi until the chequered flag, with Brown a
length behind Mosen for third place.

Mosens second place brought a fairy tale like ending to his day after
earlier having his entire racecar operation and tow vehicle stolen from the
central city with was quickly recovered.
This allowed the talented driver to show his class to take the runners-up
cheque for $8,000. Mosen regarded the second placing as the highlight of his
racing career to date.

"I could have caught him but passing would have been another matter, Scott
is one of the top guys in the world" replied Mosen when asked if he could
have won the race if at had gone two more laps.

Earlier in the evening the New Zealand Young Gun side took out the sixth and
final test in the International World Series, finish with 29 points, with
Australia second on 18, with USA 16 and the NZ Masters on 15. Australia are
