Hiroshi's World! Chapter Four: Heart of a Half-Demon

Pyros, the guardian spirit of fire, was now in the possession of Sakura, the last remaining summoner ever to exist. Though, the mana from the guardian spirit had a conflicting affect with Sakura's human blood. Because they are conflicting, dangerous sparks of mana are flying from Sakura's body. She has collapsed and is now unconscious, though Rikku and Orochi are determined to find a way to save her, before the worst can happen. Orochi knew of a man who could make clothing and accessories, that had the power to supress the power of mana exuding from a human being. He led the way, as Rikku followed behind, carrying Sakura on her back.

Rikku: I wonder if this is what Father meant... when he said shockwaves entered his bloodstream... that means the necklace must have already had mana in it. Meaning... Sakura might have had mana already in her blood, that protected her from the necklace itself.

Orochi: So it would seem. She is no ordinary human girl.

Rikku: How do you know she's human? She could be anything, for all we know.

Orochi: She gives off the same putrid human scent that you do. Therefore, she is human.

Rikku: Whaddaya mean, putrid?!?! And how can you even smell race anyway?!

Orochi: Have you forgotten? I am a half-demon. I have the demon ability of sensitive sense of smell. I can smell the very blood that courses through your veins.

Rikku: Oh yeah... but since you're a half-demon, that means you only have half the ability, doesn't it? *sniggering*

Little did she know, there was an irregular rock in the path, right in front of her foot...

Rikku: *tripping and falling forward* Uggh... d-... dammit!!

Orochi: You seem to have quite an affinity for tripping. Perhaps I shall carry the summoner instead...

Rikku: What?! No way! I can tell that you're up to no good! Who knows if you're some kind of pervert or something?!

Orochi: Pervert, you say? If you do not trust me at this point, I'm afraid I might as well leave.

Rikku: Fine, then... but watch out. I could feel the sparks of mana when I carried her on my back. You'll probably get fried or something...

But when Orochi carried her, the mana seemed to calm down. Sakura was sleeping deeply, but soundly, instead of being irritated by the conflicting mana and blood when Rikku carried her.

Rikku: I don't get it... she seems a lot calmer now.

Orochi: Hmm... now that I think about it my own demon blood has mana in it. It must be conflicting with the human blood in my body... so if I'm still alive today, then I must have mana-supressant clothing as well. Or perhaps... a certain article of my outfit has that kind of power... though it is impossible to know for sure.

Rikku: Well that's a relief. That'll make the way easier. By the way, are we close to this guy's place?

Orochi: As a matter of fact, we are. His house is just over there.

They headed to a very humble looking home, made entirely out of wooden logs. There was an elderly man outside, shaping a large plate of metal on an anvil, in front of a very hot fire.

Rikku: Wow... let's hope Sakura doesn't have to wear a chainmail suit or something...

Orochi: Excuse me, I have a--

Craftsman: Oh, Orochi! How nice to see you again! Do you need your sword sharpened? Or polished?

Orochi: Not really. My... uh... client here needs clothing to supress the mana from her necklace. She is currently unconscious. If possible... something made out of light fabric. She is merely an adolescent girl.

Craftsman: Of course! Not a hard task... but sadly my skills for cloth weaving have detererorated over the years and--

Rikku: We won't take "no" for an answer. Sorry for our rudeness, but... you're the only one who can help her, and if you don't, she'll likely be killed by the mana. We'll do anything to save her, we'll even pay you double your asking price. Just please... please help her!!

Craftsman: Alright, alright. I'll see what I can do. However, I cannot take so much money from a lady, so... one of you will have to stay and help me make the outfit. The other will have to wait in the forest, and stay with the girl. I merely need her measurements, and the rest I can do without her.

Orochi: Why in the forest? Why not outside your house?

Craftsman: I would have to remove the spell tags from my property in order to let you settle in it, because you are half-demon, and my spell tags create a barrier against demons. It would attract other demons to this place, causing more trouble.

Rikku: Hmm... I guess that means you'll have to stay with her in the forest, Orochi.

Orochi: So it would seem...

Rikku: I can't believe you called her your "client". Couldn't you have at least said "companion", or even said she was your friend?

Orochi: I do not associate with humans. I merely rely on the two of you to carry out my revenge. Friendship is... meaningless.

Rikku: Well, whatever. Believe what YOU want. *sarcastically* Anyway, have fun in the forest with your "client".

Orochi carried Sakura to a circular plot of land, surrounded by trees. It seemed like a good place to relax. It was around sunset, so he gathered some wood and kindled a fire. he sat down in front of it, and set Sakura on the ground next to him, though, the mana shockwaves began to pierce through her arms now, causing them to bleed.

Orochi: *sigh* I never thought I'd say this, but... this sucks...

He picked her up and and let her sit on his lap instead. He took out a roll of bandages from one of Sakura's bags of belongings and began to delicately bandage the wound on her arm. Seeing her brought back a memory of his past... paining him to recall...

flashback...

Twelve-year-old Orochi Kusanagi was practising his kunai and shuriken throwing at the village training grounds. Orochi was much more youthful-looking back then. His hair was neatly spiked and his scar was not there as yet. His grey eyes were hostile as he threw a kunai at a target, which was in the shape of a human. A cute little girl, possibly around the age of five or six years old came running to him.

Little girl: Big brother! Big brother!

Orochi's hostile grey eyes gradually grew neutral, then very gentle.

Orochi: Hmm? What is it, sis?

Orochi's sister: My arm... I fell on a sharp stone and cut it a little... it's bleeding...

Despite his teacher's orders to ignore his sister, Orochi went with her outside the training grounds and examined her bleeding arm. He gently bandaged it for her. His little sister hugged him.

Orochi's sister: I'm the luckiest girl in the world! I have the greatest big brother ever!

It pained Orochi to remember his past. Because he disobeyed his orders from his teacher, he was beaten and punished whenever his sister came crying to him. It didn't matter much to him though. He loved his little sister more than anything back then. But now... she was dead. She had been slaughtered along with all the other Kusanagi shinobi, by the notorious anonymous ninja leader. He clenched the leader's tag in his fist, trying to stifle the tears, but could not. Just then, Sakura began to wake up, though Orochi was too lost in thought to notice...

Sakura: Uggh... oww my head...

When she spoke, Orochi snapped out of his daze.

Orochi: Huh?

She took one look at her surroundings. She didn't know how she got into this forest, and on top of that, she was in Orochi's arms.

Sakura: AHHHHH!!!!!

Orochi: Huh? what's wro--

But before he could finish his sentence, She was trying to squeeze her way out of his grasp.

Sakura: YOU PERVERT!!! LET GO OF ME!!! I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE TRUSTED YOU!!!

Orochi: Huh??!! *blushing* I-It's not what you think! I was just--

Rikku had just come back from the craftsman's workshop, and was carrying two cups of hot chocolate in her hands.

Rikku: Um... maybe I should have come back later...

Orochi: *sighing* Not you, too!!

Sakura: Aaahhh Rikku I was wrong! He can't be trusted!!! KILL HIM!!!

Rikku: Whoa, relax, Sakura. I'll explain...

Rikku explained the odd predicament to Sakura, so that she would be devoid of any "disturbing ideas".

Sakura: Oh. Uh... sorry about that, Orochi. I didn't realize what was going on...

Orochi: Hmph. Think nothing of it. Rikku, how is the progress on that outfit?

Rikku: It'll be done in a few hours. Though... he insists that we stay out here for the night, since it would be pointless to make our way by nightfall. In the morning, we'll be heading for the Imperial capital of Gaia, Kaichitoka. Its the largest city in the world. We're bound to learn more about the Guardian Spirits there. Anyways, here. I got you two some hot chocolate. I'm going back to help the old man. See ya!

Sakura remained in his lap, as Rikku had instructed her to, though it was uncomfortably strange. She picked up her hot chocolate, not knowing it was so hot, and spilled it on the ground.

Sakura: whoops...

Orochi's grey eyes became gentle again, just as they did when he bandaged his sister's arm.

Orochi: Chocolate... contains chemicals that reduce my demonic ferocity. Take... mine...

It was quite blatantly obvious to Sakura that he was making it up. She knew that he was trying to hide the kindness beyond his bitter personality. She smiled at his kind gesture.

Sakura: Orochi... why were you... crying?

Orochi: I was not crying.

Sakura: I can see the tear trails on your cheeks...

Orochi: It's nothing... you just... remind me a lot of my younger sister, that's all. She was killed by that ninja leader, along with the rest of my clan. You are much like her... helpless, defenseless, powerle--

Sakura: Don't finish that sentence! Just you watch, I'm going to become a great summoner and I can promise you, I won't ever cower in fear at any point of the way!

Orochi: Big words, coming from a small person.

Sakura: Well, its not like I was planning on doing it all alone, you know. I have you and Rikku with me. We're a team! We're... friends! ... right?

Orochi: Demons do not need friends. You are nothing more than a client.

Sakura: Oh, please. Just suck up your pride, princess. Admit it. You, me, and Rikku-- We're friends! You may be a demon, but you're also human.

Orochi: Fine. We're... friends...

Sakura: Say it louder!!

Orochi: Just shut up, alright?! I can't exactly get away from you until your outfit is completed, so can you at least gimme a break?!

Sakura: Oh, right. I'm sorry.

Wow, that was an easy negotiation. She couldn't put up much of a verbal argument. Perhaps she had some sort of hidden maturity that detered her from such petty childishness. Or perhaps, she just had a kind heart...

Sakura: *yawning* Man, I'm tired. Oh, wait... I guess I'm gonna have to sleep on your lap...

Orochi: *sarcastically* Heh, great. Just what I needed.

Sakura: Just pretend... that I'm your sister. Then it might be easier, on your part.

Orochi: Alright...

To Orochi, this girl could never replace the place in his heart where he held the memory of his little sister. But perhaps, she could fill up a part that had forever been empty... frienship. He smiled behind his mask, and he himself dozed off as well.

Rikku: HEY!!! WAKE UP!!! It's morning!!

Orochi was leaning back against a tree, and Sakura was curled up like a cat on his lap. Both woke up instantly at Rikku's shouting.

Rikku: Sakura! Your outfit is finished! You're gonna love it!

The new outfit looked like her old women's ninja gear, except the top part looked like a kimono. It was dark blue, and made out of a silky material. He even made a sheathe-type thing for her staff as well, for easy carrying. She changed into the new outfit...

Rikku: Haha!! You look so adorable!!!

Sakura: tee-hee *giggling*

Orochi: *exasperatedly* Shall we be on our way, then?

Sakura: Yeah! To Kaichitoka!!

The adventurers got back to their journey again. Sakura could now freely control her body, and was in good health. They were headed for the Imperial City, where they would definitely learn more about what was to come on their journey. Who knows what they'll find there? Find out in the next chapter, of Hiroshi's World.
