Hiroshi's World! Chapter Three: Spirit of Fire

Where we last left off, Orochi had joined Sakura and Rikku, on their quest to collect the Guardian Spirits of Gaia, in order to protect the people of the planet. It was around midnight, and the night sky was like a dark blanket, covered with brightly sparkling diamonds. On top of that, a beautiful moonlight illuminated the tops of the large trees. The three had sat around the fire that Sakura and Rikku had built before the attack of the werewolf. Despite the hour of the night, they decided to wait a few more hours until they went to sleep.

Rikku: Hey, Orochi... why do you have that scar accross your eye?

Orochi: Beats me.

Rikku: W-What??? You mean you don't know how you got a scar on your own face???

Orochi: It's a long story. Actually... I was hoping that I'd never have to tell this story ever again... though now I feel as if I might as well... since the three of us will be travelling together for quite a long time...

Sakura: Yeah, I've been wondering about that scar as well. Please tell us, Orochi. Though... if it pains you to tell...

Orochi: No, it's alright. You don't have to worry. Well... it was around five years ago. I was only twelve years old when it happened... I was sleeping, then when I woke up... everyone in my village... was dead...

Sakura: That's...

Rikku: horrible...

Orochi: This scar was across my eye when I woke up, and... it was bleeding... My father was lying in front of me, barely alive. He must have died... protecting me. He had a fatal wound in his chest, and the blood from his wound stained my clothes... He told me something before he died. he said... "Be strong, Orochi" he told me that I would only find the true power I was seeking... by breaking some wall, whatever that meant. I was walking around the village and found this...

Orochi held up something that looked much like a spell tag, but Rikku and Sakura both knew what it was. Leaders of ninja clans would wear tags like this, to show their clan status. Rikku's father had one as well, though it looked much different from the one Orochi held in his hand. On these tags, the word "leader" was always written in the first column, and the name of that leader was written in the second column. They could read the word "leader", but the name was written in a peculiar ancient script.

Orochi: I am certain that to whomever this tag belongs to... he was the one who assassinated my people. Though I do not know his name, I know that he is a ninja clan leader, and an evil one as well. And he is either a human or... a demon.

Sakura: Why do you say that?

Orochi: Because... I am a half-demon. We are despised by the purebloods of both our species.

Rikku: W-WHAT?!?? That means... that means you're from...

Orochi: ... the Kusanagi Clan.

Rikku: *getting up* Sakura, we're leaving. Let's go.

It was a pretty famous incident in Kozuka history. Though she and her family rarely ever talked about it, Rikku once had a younger brother, named Koji. However, he was one day, unexpectedly kidnapped by an assassin from the Kusanagi Clan. Despite the fact that whatever happened after that was unknown, the Kozuka clan believed he was killed. The Kusanagi Clan was a notorious bunch of assassins who burned villages, robbed nobles, and killed anyone who tried to get in their way. Even children. Since that day, Rikku had never been able to trust demons and half-demons, or ninja assassins. She would never put her trust in the monsters that took away someone from her family. Never.

Rikku: I refuse to associate with your kind! Come on, Sakura! We're leaving.

Sakura: ... I'm not leaving.

Rikku was surprised. Sakura had never been assertive like that before. Wasn't she scared of this man? He was a monster!

Rikku: Huh? What are you talking abou--

Sakura: It's wrong... to judge someone based on things like race, things like their clans, things... that their people have done. Things that... they can't change. Back in the village, I was treated like that as well. It wasn't my fault that I couldn't use ninjutsu, but people still looked down on me. And... I don't want anyone to ever have to feel that kind of pain...

Orochi couldn't believe his ears. This girl... she was different. She wasn't like the rest of the world. She had felt the same pain that he had felt all these years... though in a different way.

Rikku: Fine. I'll TRY to trust you. But if you do anything suspicious...

Orochi: ... You can have the pleasure of severing my neck with my own katana.

Rikku: Works for me.

Though it pained her heart to do so, Rikku had to learn to trust Orochi. It was the only choice she had. Though she could never forget the pain of the loss of Koji, she had to remember Sakura's words as well. Orochi might not be able to change the fact that he's a half-demon from the Kusanagi Clan, but perhaps he could change... himself.

Early in the morning, the three had set off once more, for a nearby city on the other side of the forest. If the map was correct, then this city was called Kokichi, which was built on top of an active volcano. Smart. Since Orochi knew the way quite well, they hardly needed the aid of a map. They decided to take a quick break, when they were almost out of the Kozuka Forest.

Orochi: Summoner, do you know of the Guardian Spirits of Gaia?

Sakura: Uh... well... um...

Orochi: Heh, I thought so. It is said that there is a Spirit for each of the eight elements that rule over our planet-- Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, Thunder, Ice, Light, and Darkness. If the rumors are true, then Pyros, the Guardian Spirit of Fire, dwells somewhere on the outskirts of Kokichi. We should try to find him while we are here...

Rikku: Yes. Well I think we've taken a long enough break...

Orochi: Indeed. Let's get moving.

About an hour later, they had reached the bustling city of Kokichi. It was nothing like Kozuka. The buildings were made out of stone, and there were roads of slate instead of dirt. It truly was an impressive sight to behold. There was a large group of people lining up for some sort of event...

Wierd Man: Come on down, to the Kokichi Volcano Tour! This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore the inside of this wonderful masterpiece of mother nature!! Admission is free! Come now, while it's hot! Oooh that pun hit me in the funny bone...

Rikku: ...and I thought my DAD was a bad comedian.

Sakura: We should go! What if Pyros is in that volcano?

Orochi: I think you're right. Yes, we should go.

The line was moving rather slowly, but when it finally reached the volcano, some people left in fear of getting scalded by the boiling magma. The inside of the volcano was definitely something you would not see everyday. There was a rickety bridge, where the people on the tour walked on. About 70 feet below, there was an ocean of red magma, just waiting to be appetized by an unsuspecting human. The tour had found its way to a fork in the bridge, and took the end on the left.

Orochi: Let's take the other path. Chances are they aren't headed anywhere near Pyros on the road they're taking. Hmm? What's wrong, summoner?

Sakura: *trembling* Oh, nothing... I just have... this... terrible... fear... of... heights...

Rikku: We're almost there, Sakura. Don't worry.

Sure enough, the slightly more rickety bridge they took led to a large mountain-like wall, made entirely out of volcanic earth. It even had little nooks in it, for people to climb up. Was it some sort of wierd coincidence? Did someone know they were coming here and prepare the wall for them to climb?

Rikku: Whoa... how are we supposed to climb THAT thing?!

Orochi: I suppose we use these little holes to put our feet and hands in to balance ourselves... we have to be careful. Summoner... can you do this?

Sakura: Don't worry, I'll be fine. I just... won't look down, and I'll make it up.

Orochi and Rikku had made it up the cliff, sweating and breathing heavily from fatigue, and from the intense heat of the volcano. Sakura came closely behind them...

Rikku: Are you alright, Sakura?

Sakura: Yes, I'm fine. I think we're almost there...

Though she was just as tired as they were, she was determined not to show it. The Guardian Spirit, Pyros, was near, and she didn't want to show any sign of weakness. They were walking along the path, until they came to a strange sight. There was a very large circular plot of volcanic soil, surrounded by a circle of lava. There was an altar in the center of the circle, made of the same stone used in the village. As soon as Sakura stepped into the circle, the altar started to crack. She took a step back, and a fiery red glow from within the stone illuminated the cracks. The altar then exploded, and a ball of fire was floating in mid-air. What was going on? The fire then took the shape of some sort of animal, then, it materialized. It was Pyros, the Spirit of Fire. It had the body of a large red lion. Its mane was made of a golden flame, and its claws and teeth reminded the three of the werewolf they encountered previously, except that Pyros stood on all fours.

Pyros: Who dares to disrupt the slumber of Pyros, the Spirit of Fire?!

Rikku: Whoa! It talks!!

Sakura: Uh... I've come to disript your slumber, Mr. Pyros... I mean... I am a summoner, and my name is Sakura! I have come to obtain your power!

Pyros: For what purpose do you need my power?

Sakura: I will protect the people of Gaia with the power of the Guardian Spirits. I want to change this world... for the better. That is why I need your power.

Pyros: Prove your worth to me, as a summoner. Then, I shall see you worthy of my power.

Sakura: Huh?

Orochi: It wants to fight!!

Pyros had lunged at Sakura, but before he could land a hit, he was struck by something... an arrow.

Rikku: If it wants a fight, then I'll give it one!

The arrow burned instantly. It hardly penetrated Pyros's flesh. Though Rikku was not ready to give up yet.

Orochi: I shall help as well! *unsheathes sword*

Sakura watched helplessly as Rikku and Orochi battled the notorious beast, Pyros. She couldn't do anything but watch... Orochi had managed to give Pyros a leg injury with his sword, and Rikku had given Pyros an injury on one of his front paws. However, she fell over and Pyros had clawed her leg, causing it to bleed. Sakura once more, felt useless. She had no sort of real power. Then, she remembered-- the staff. Almost on a whim, she charged at Pyros with the staff, as if it were a sword. She gave him a good smack on the forehead, with the crescent moon part of the top of the staff. Suddenly, it felt as if the staff was glued to Pyros. It began to glow the same fiery red as the fireball that Pyros came from. Pyros began to glow the same red as well. Then, he began to vanish...

Orochi: What?

Rikku: What's going on?!
Sakura: What's happening? I- I can't move!

It appeared as if Pyros was disappearing into the staff. When he was no longer visible, Sakura fell backwards, with the staff in her hands. Suddenly, the necklace began to glow the fiery red, and in one of the nine rings, a red gem was formed. The gem began to talk in an echoeing voice...

Pyros: You have proven your worth, Summoner Sakura. My power is yours.

Rikku: Is that... a ruby?

Orochi: Perhaps this gem is what contains Pyros's power... it might be essential for summoning him. Good work, Sakura.

Rikku: Yeah, Sakura! That was awesome!

Sakura: Huh? Orochi, you...

Orochi: Hmm? What is it?

Sakura: That was... the first time you ever called me by my name, that's all.

Orochi: hmph...it doesn't matter...

They were making their way out of the volcano, but suddenly, Sakura had fallen to the ground. Sparks of an electricity-like substance were coming out of her body.

Rikku: Sakura! Are you alright?!?!? What's going on?!?!?!

Orochi observed Sakura for a few seconds, then he figured out the problem.

Orochi: This substance is not electricity... it is... mana.

Rikku: M-Mana? What's that?

Orochi: A substance that allows the use of magic. Hmm... the mana from that gem must be interfering with her bodily functions. We need something that will supress the mana from the gem, or else she will likely be killed by it. Perhaps a new outfit made of mana-supressant clothing should work.

Rikku: And where are we supposed to get one of those??

Orochi: Around the area of the Kozuka Forest, there is a man who makes such clothing. Let's find him.

Rikku: Yeah. I'll carry Sakura. You just point the way. We have to hurry!!

The mana from the ruby had a conflicting affect with Sakura's body. Orochi and Rikku hurried to find the man who could make the clothing that Sakura needed. Will they find him in time? Find out in the next chapter of Hiroshi's World.
