Background

Roy Johansen was born in Yorkshire in 1948 and still lives in Leeds.

Roy was in the Royal Navy for nine years and then pursued a career in insurance.

In 1993 he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and underwent a long and agonizing, but ultimately successful regime of treatment at Killingbeck Hospital,Leeds.

While convalescing Roy took up painting as therapy to help him come to terms with his illness. He hasn't stopped painting since, and continues to raise funds for the Oesophageal Patients' Association and Sue Ryder Care.
