"It was always my ambition that if I was successful I would try to portray a truthful portrait of African Americans in this country, negative and positive. I've never really tried to get in that hole where everything has to be 100%, - because I think that it's not necessarily true - and it's definitely not dramatic having the subject, the characters in your film be 100% angelic, and god-like."

BIOGRAPHY

Spike Lee was born Shelton Lee in 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is William Lee, a composer and bassist. His mother, who passed away in 1977, Jacquelyn Lee was an art and African-American literature teacher. His wife is Tonya Lewis and he has two children , daughter-Satchel, and son-Jackson Lewis. He also has three brothers, one sister, and one half-brother.

Spike had the opportunity to attend a private school (predominantly white), where his mother was teacher, he refused and chose to attend a public school. He said he wanted to be around more poeple of his color. After graduating John Dewey High School in 1975 he went on to receive a BA in Communications from Morehouse College, Atlanta. He then attended The Institute of Film and Television at New York University.

TRADEMARK STYLE

Spike experimented with different styles in his films. He used actors and/or actresses standing on a dolly to give the look as if they are gliding through the scene.

He also would often have the characters look directly into the camera as if they are addressing the viewer.

For those who have seen his films, Spike Lee has also casted himself in many of them.

Spike Lee has also used a subjective point of view in alot of his films. The use of up close shots give the feeling that the viewer is actually there.
