ROPER is located in the South East Side of San Antonio at 4991 Higdon Rd. The phone number is(210) 633-2042. The founder is Sherri Mell a 2X Hall of Fame Cowgirl, Adapted PE Teacher of the Year, Special Olympics Tom Landry Coach of the Year and holds multiple (over 100) World and National Horse Show and Rodeo titles. She has been a PE teacher for 24 years as well as a Special Olympics coach for 17 years. Coach Mell is also the Equestrian Coordinator for the Texas Equestrian Special Olympics State Competition.
ROPER specializes in individualizing the rider's program to meet their personal individual needs. This includes assessment of both the rider and horse, the rider's disabilities and areas of weakness' and strengths. After the assessment meets the satisfaction of both rider and coach, a program with goals and objectives is set up. Implementation of these goals is done by the Coach at regular scheduled practice sessions on Wednesday evenings. All Inclusive Summer camps, Thanksgiving Camps and Holiday Camps are also available. Games and acitivties on horseback are the focus along with improving the areas of weakness' of the riders during the recreational horseback camps.
Volunteers are always welcome and the ROPER team also includes Unified Riders (non-disabled riders that ride alongside of the disabled riders) who are able to compete in the Equestrian Competition as part of the team. Unified Riders are usually volunteers who have come out to help and find their way to becoming not just assistance on the ground but from horseback as well. They are often times friends or family members and are able to win their own medals at the Special Olympics by participating on the team with their family member or friend!
