Quick-ish Biography
Name: Gavin Shane DeGraw
Date of Birth: Febuary 4, 1977
Family: Mother, Lynn who is a detox specialist while his father, Wayne,
is a prison gaurd. (hence in I Don't Want To Be the verse "I don't need
to be anything other than a prison gaurd's son, I don't need to be
anything other than a specialist's son.") Gavin has an older
brother, Joey Degraw, who plays the guitar well and helps in Gavin's
band and is in hopes of getting his own soon, (Like Joey? Go to

older sister, Neeka, who is a mother and "is very charitable" as Joey
put it in an e-mail I recieved from him.
Singer/Songwriter Gavin DeGraw grew up playing music at home with piano
studies beginning at Eight and later playing in cover bands with Joey
in up-state New York. After a brief stint studying music at the
prestigious Berklee School of Music, DeGraw, who had been writing his
own songs since his cover band days, (Gavin says in a UK interview that
his brother when he was about 15 challenged him to write his own songs
and has been doing it since.) decided to make a go of it as a
singer/songwriter in New York City. Upon his arrival in the late 90's,
DeGraw made an impression with crowds, and occasionally with
journalists, as his name began to pop up in columns and best-of lists.
The steady buzz led to offers from major labels, but DeGraw chose to
take his time, and let his craft develope and his audience grow. He
eventually signed a record deal with Clive Davis and his J-Records
imprint (Home of Santana as well as R&B mainstays Alicia Keys and
Angie Stone as well as Maroon 5 and other artists). DeGraw's debut,
Chariot, arrived in the summer of 2003 and, like in his early days in
New York City, it slowely built momentum and earned this young singer a
small but fervent following.
J-Records recalls:
"... Within a few months of his arrival (Manhattan in 1998), Gavin
faked his way into an open-mic night at Wilson's, the noted Upper West
Side Ballroom, and wowed the audience to such a degree that the club's
owner, Debbie Wilson, signed on as his manager the following day.
Almost imediatly, word of the talented newcomer began to spread through
New York's music community, and the quality of his performances lived
up to the buzz. Alternating between playing solo at the piano and
playing guitar infront of a rocking band, DeGraw augmented his
impressive originals with impassioned covers of classic tunes like Sam
Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come,' Marvin Gaye's 'Lets Get It On,' and
Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah.'...'When I first heard Gavin perform,
after the first song which was 'More Than Anyone,' (Hey all out there,
this is the Webmaster, I have that recording if anyone wants it) I
turned to Debbie (his manager) and said I need to sign this guy right
now,' says Randy Sabiston, senior director of A&R at Warner
Chappel. 'Gavin is a truly special songwriter and as a publisher, I
didn't need to mull it over in my head, it was an instant no brainer.'"
