just celebrated another year of life. every birthday brings with it a time of reflection, and this one was no different. this years reflection surrounded around how many times i've been called a snob. "you're a music/movie/art snob." my reply to this is; yes, yes I am.
slowly getting around to appreciating thom yorkes new album, the eraser.
Band news: we have some changes happening to our little band, that most won't notice or even care for that matter. so ho hum... stayed tuned for updates here. No one is leaving the band, we are growing another appendage, figuratively speaking of course.
it's getting hotter! and since when did california get humidty?
humidity; 443rd reason why i hate florida.

The last show went really well. Got to team up with another cool band, my machete, that I hope will join our little band collective. Requirements to be in the collective: no egos, no egos, and no egos. I'm all for assuming personas; art for art sakes and such. But I have a major problem with people/bands who feel that every show is a competition, to see whose band is better or whatever. look, if you feel the need to do this, go play football and bash some heads in. music to me is art and a conduit (look it up) to channel my anti-social anxieties, the best thing about our band is that we are all mostly anti-social and the band allows us to be social in a relatively safe environment without the use of alcohol. We use this band as a vehicle to express ourselves, some paint, write, photograph we find banging on instruments most fulfilling.
saw radiohead the other night; amazing!
mostly played all new materials, i say mostly cos i already heard them -thank you limewire.
hear it here first friends, ALL I NEED is a new song that will be the song that brings back all of the fans that left them at Kid A. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!!! watch the video here: http://http://www.ateaseweb.com/news/archive/2006/06/all_i_need.php
"I am the next step waiting in the wings...I am all the days that you choose to ignore... I am in the middle of a picture..."
again, Radiohead proving that they are the best band playing today, this is a true statement unless you like crap music and/or you like new "hardcore," which if you do, we're sorry.

Myspace: the double edged sword.
myspace offers us an outlet to display our ever charming personalities via the quote headline, our expertise at photo shop programs in our photos, and lets not forget our popularity and magnetic personalities finely exhibited by the astronomically high number of "friends," that we have accumulated over the years. The flip side is that it has been extremely helpful for our little band. I would venture to say that about 99.9% of our shows have been booked through the 'space. in case anybody cares, here's the official BANK HOLIDAY guideline to adding and denying myspace friends: if you request to "befriend" us and you're a real person regardless of the high number of "friends" you have we will add you. Now, if you're a band, we enforce a strict don't suck rule. I listen to most of the bands that ask to add us, I say most, cos sometimes I'm up late (usually drinking) and i don't feel like implementing the BH guidelines, but when it's enforced I listen to the bands. I do on rare occasions find some really cool bands and if they're local I try to organize a show and get them on the bill. we hate it when our friends become successful especially if they're nothern...
here are the lyrics to our new song sans bells and whistles; "we're up the creek."
run for cover
it's alright
duck and cover
this won't take long
i won't waste your time and i won't waste mine
I feel you by me but it doesn't help me
we're up a creek 3x
You're an arm's length...away
I can feel you even far away
so quick to snap shots, not thinking of us
even if we tried our best, it wouldn't work out
we're up a creek 3x
give it your best shot with all of your might
i've got you covered but not by much
if thats all you've got, then we're both up the creek
even if you cared, it wouldn't change me much.
xox
they won't know who it's for...

to paraphrase Liam Gallagher from Oasis; 'I'm not a singer, I'm a rock guitarist, first and foremost.' the response was to a question of whether he plans on singing anymore. My sentiments exactly! though I sing 4 songs, i still consider myself more of a jonny than a thom.
it's that time of year where i'm reminded that i no longer have summer vacations.
we plan on practicing tonight, make it down if you're in the beautiful south gate area, say 7 ish. I have a friend, or acquaintance rather, that calls a practice a rehearsal . I suppose the terms are interchangeable but when i think of a rehearsal i think of an orchestra or a group of actors rehearsing scenes, not 4 dudes in a stuffy garage banging on their instruments. we're rehearsing tonight cos we're playing soon. in case you didn't know we are playing this coming sunday evening with our old pal alonso and his band thewreckingstone. I also asked, based upon the suggestion of matt, my machete to join us. i have love/hate emotions towards booking shows. I love being involved in every aspect of organizing a show, mainly due to my megalomania, but at the same time it sucks being the go to guy for every little thing, i get that enough being in this band. what can i say i'm a natural leader, have i mentioned how i don't like people?

to clear the air. bank holiday is a name that we conjured up because we grew tired of the connotions placed upon the former name, arsenal. people thought that we were a metal band or something. most of us like soccer and we dug the name of one of London's finest football clubs of said name. I suppose the gunners would have been a good one, but we had a certain band rule that said we couldn't use the prefix 'the' in our name. anyhow, bank holiday came about cos it sounded cool and it offered us a name where we couldn't be associated to any particular genre. a bonus was that its a european term that most americans wouldn't get, and it also was the holidays where the British mods used to utilize by throwing huge scooter rides & northern soul all-nighters on the coast. a brief history of bank holiday.
while running errands today i noticed that my neighborhood is quite nice. there are lots of beautiful houses and flowers about, i might consider taking walks since i've abandoned all notions of working a job this week, and perhaps the next one as well. i'm starting to feel like stuart murdoch with all my updates.

We have decided that this summer we are going to focus on our vocals. When Heather joined the band it opened us up to the idea that we can harmonize and double songs, at least in theory. Before her we just hammered through the vocals and called it art rock. I think we've grown tiresome of lying to ourselves; we're not my bloody valentine, not even close. On the other hand, we aren't kidding ourselves into thinking that we're radiohead either. So our attainable goal is to just hit our notes and not get too fancy, perhaps to start singing with some more passion, and at the very least sing with confidence. The vocal 3 are Art, Heather, and myself. We'll let you know, or better yet, you'll let us know how it's going.
I was looking through mean street today and saw my high school heros on the cover; NOFX. Not only the fact that there was still a warp tour, but that NOFX are still playing it, was sad. It only got worst, the tag line was something to the effect of "NOFX: the political voice of their scene." Political voice? This is same band that wrote an ode to a shampoo that kills crabs. If NOFX told me to vote against Bush, I think I'd vote for him just out of spite. Another thing I noticed in mean street were these horrible band photos. Let me say this before I bash these emo-hardcore-stupid haircut "boy bands," and I use the term boy to it's full effect, that photo shoots are at best sketchy. You can turn out looking like these tough boys staring down the photographer or you could come out looking like the biggest posers; which in reality we really are. It's a fine line to taking band photographs, and an even threadier line making ugly dudes look good and not overdoing it. Most of the mean street boys photos had some of the lads putting hands in their pockets slightly turned while the other perfect-haired, black ash trays wearing in their ear lobes, in their tight jeans, mad dog the camera. whoa, scary hardcore bands that sound nothing like Gorilla Biscuits or N.I.V..We found a way to circumvent the ever pretentious photo by not having them. We are deathly afraid of them cos we feel that photographs steal parts of our soul, and we're not at liberty to be giving them away. So in closing vocals are a factor, and photographers are evil shamans.

Clean start. I've decided to clear everything off of this old beast of a webpage and revamp it; tidy up a bit. I'll probably start to update this more often with rants and other thoughts concerning and not concerning Bank Holiday. Visit us soon.
Some of you might, but most of you don't, know that we were on yet another hiatus, six months! and that we recently played a show with l.i.e. and Anchors for Architects at sol art. Anchors were amazing. I've never seen them, we had a show booked with them but they cancelled, anyways they were great. LIE invited us to play. I was a bit hesitant to cos we hadn't played in a while and I wanted to spend more time writing new material, but how can I say no to them? I love playing with the earthquakes, they are some of the nicest people that I've had the pleasure of meeting. Hopefully they will be playing with us at our next show. The world cup started, got to see England play; not too impressed. I must say waking up at 5am, after a nights worth of drinking mind you, coupled with the fact that they water downed the beers that we bought at 7am kind of stunk. Monday the US plays and the only place to properly watch a football match is at a pub; 9am PST.
