Telstar 1

...Rockin' London

In the beginning, there was darkness.....

It's the early 1960's. The Stones, Who, Kinks & Beatles were tops, but ya just couldn't hear any of this on the existing BBC radio stations. So, spurred on by the new, shiny pirate ships of the time, myself and a few friends thought we could do the same - on a smaller scale.

So in the long Summer holidays, and weekends, and weekday evenings, we messed around with old valve radios, and planned and plotted and learned, UNTIL..... we were able to get a feeble signal out to the front lawn just outside my house. This was a landmark achievement and spurred us on to do bigger and better things.

Rather than converting old valve radios into weak transmitters, we built proper radio transmitters, and our signals got stronger, further, and then one day we were heard on someone's car radio a few miles away! This was splendid stuff indeed.

By now it's 1965, and the fledgling Radio Telstar took to the air.
