Many thanks to Christina Johnes for sharing of a review.

"A Knight in Camelot" is a Disney film made in 1998 based on the book by Mark Twain ‘A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’. Film was directed by Roger Young, written by Mark Twain (novel) and Joe Wiesenfeld (script). Credited cast: Whoopi Goldberg as Dr. Vivien Morgan, Michael York as King Arthur, Paloma Baeza as Sandy, Simon Fenton as Clarence, James Coombes as Sir Lancelot, Robert Addie as Sir Sagramour, Ian Richardson as Merlin, Amanda Donohoe as Queen Guinevere. Like all Disney films, the film is made for family entertainment.

In the begining a modern day scientist Vivien Morgan is accidentally flung back in time to the period of King Arthur. She is immediately captured by Sir Sagramor who takes her to King Arthur’s Court. There she convinces King Arthur that she can be of use to him, so he allows her to stay at court. Also at court are Queen Guinevere and Merlin.

While at court Vivien tries different experiments/improvements that are not welcomed by everyone at court. She also learns from Clarence (a serf) that Sir Sagramor had previously killed his family when he was a child and now that he is old enough he wants to challenge Sir Sagramor in combat. However, it is Vivien who ends up fighting the combat as Clarence is not a knight.

The combat takes place in the main hall of the castle and is played to be safe and humorous rather than violent (after all, this is meant to be family film). Eventually, Vivien wins the combat by defeating and humiliating Sir Sagramor in front of the Royal Court. As punishment Sir Sagramor is banished from court.

Vivien then convinces King Arthur to go out into his country in disguise to show him how his people are suffering in poverty. However, while out in the country they are arrested for a crime they did not commit and are sentenced to death. Queen Guinevere and Lancelot thinking that King Arthur is already dead, try to claim the throne.

In the meantime, Vivien and King Arthur are saved from the scaffold by Clarence and return to court just in time to stop Queen Guinevere and Lancelot. As a reward Clarence is knighted by King Arthur. At this time, Vivien is then transported back to the 20th century.

Robert’s role as Sir Sagramor is played to be the villain, there always has to be one or two baddies in any film. When he first arrests Vivien, he is in full armour on a horse with a lance and takes her back to court, prodding her along with the lance. This made good use of Robert’s horsemanship skills.

In the combat scene in the main hall, obviously Sir Sagramor being the baddie has to lose. The fight scene is designed to be humorous and both Robert Addie and Whoopi Goldberg succeed in this. With, of course Sir Sagramor being suitably humiliated and humbled at the end.

Robert played the part of Sir Sagramor very well. Nasty when need be, humbled when need be. To enjoy this film, you must accept it for what it is, a light hearted Disney family film.
