So, after 27 hours of labor and an hour of serious pushing...
Peyton Lynn Roe
7 pounds, 7.3 ounces
20 inches
Born at 8:46 pm, Sunday May 25, 2008 at Easton Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md.
... at least from Grandma Karon and Grandpa Rob's perspective.
The way it was supposed to go:
The way it actually happened:
So, we drove the two and a half hours to Easton Thursday afternoon. After spending the day waiting for the test results, which we finally got about 4 hours late, Karley was more than a little disappointed to hear Peyton's lungs weren't developed enough to be delivered. They would probably run the test again in a couple weeks. This was our first sign that, no matter how old, Peyton was running the show.
Oh well, it was a chance for Karley, Scott/Eddie, Karon, Rob, and Casey to have a nice cookout Friday. Karley mentioned every once in a while how her tummy muscles would get really tight ("No really, you have to feel this!"), but it certainly didn't hurt, so that couldn't be anything, right? Saturday morning, we check out of our hotel room early, have a good lunch and say goodbye. As we just get across the (very evil) Bay Bridge, we get a message from Karley that she left her sandwich in the back of our car. Now see, if we hadn't already crossed the bridge, we might just have turned back around then. But, we went back to Frederick, joking about how she'd probably go into labor now that we were gone. (You see where this is going, right?)
Finally, we get home. We unpack. We have about 10 minutes to rest on the couch when... the phone rings. Karley is having honest-to-goodness labor pains. They're going to the hospital, and they'll let us know. We decide to fill up the gas tank (just in case) and pick up our favorite pizza to celebrate our anniversary. Did I mention it was our 12th anniversary? The hospital says she's in labor, but sends her home where she'll be more comfortable 'til things get serious. So we chill a bit and wait. Somewhere around 10pm, Karon gets Karley to head back to the hospital, because her contractions seemed to be around a minute apart. And we wait some more.
Midnight rolls around, and we're trying to decide if we should just get in the car and head back anyway. Finally we get word, yep, she's being admitted. So we head back for our third trip over that bridge in the last few days. Did I mention I hate going over that bridge? We arrived at 2 in the morning, checked in to see that Karley was doing fine and resting, Scott's mom Sharon watching over her. That gave us a couple hours to sleep when it was apparent things would be taking a while.
Most of Sunday was spent watching over Karley and getting her ready, talking about the contractions and what was to come. A little after 1pm, she was given an epidural, which she was very happy for. The contractions got stronger and closer as the day went on. Nana Sharron arrived and waited in the emergency room waiting area, because only a few people could be in the Birthing Center. Karley's brother Casey arrived around 9pm with the all important Costco blueberry muffins and waited with her. Right at 8pm, the grandpas Rob and Scott were outside the room when Karon came out to get the video camera, saying "They're starting to have her push, you two need to stay our here." From that point on, it was our job to report the news to everyone we could. Text messages were our best friends.
8:02pm "Pushing now."
After someone sent me a message asking "What's happening?", I replied
8:25pm "I'm outside the room so I don't know much but I'm hearing the first loud sounds from her as I type this."
After a "Get pictures!"
8:30pm "Karon has my vid cam"
Things got kind of quick at that point.
8:34pm "I hear Kar pushing and some laughing every once in a while."
There were an awful lot of people urging Karley on to push, and cheering. Karon says there were around 15 or 20 people in the room, between family and the doctor, nurse and respiratory team. Karley says they did a lot of "just one more push" followed by "okay, just one more" again.. and again. Eventually, there was one last very loud urge to push. followed by a loud cheer, a few breathless moments of silence, and then a strong cry loud enough for me to hear it ouside.
8:47pm "I hear a baby crying"
8:49pm "Nurse walking out said everything's fine"
Nana sent a reply to see if she was breathing well.
8:51pm "Must be, I hear a lot of crying in there"
Another nurse walks out with one of the scales.
8:53pm "7 pounds, 7.3 ounces"
Then a few minutes later, the doctor walks out, carrying Peyton to the nursery. He stopped to let us take quick pictures (which I knew was a _great_ sign!), Pop-pop Scott got the phone cam picture and I was lucky enough to have the real camera in my hand and snapped a quick one.
8:59pm The phone cam picture gets sent to everyone, as well as pictures of her footprints (feetprints??)
Mom Karley was exhausted and dealing with severe back spasms (which she had the entire delivery, I later heard). Peyton was put in the nursery, with a small clear plastic oxygen hood making sure she was doing well. At first they had her at 40% oxygen, but it quickly got lessened to 27% (normal room oxygen is 21%).
Eventually, the adrenaline wore off, people drifted home after much hugging and congratulating, and the new mom and dad got to rest.
