    ROANOAKE STUD

We are a small stud situated at the top of the South Island,New Zealand. The closest town to us is Picton.Trevor is a full time farrier, travelling thousands of kms a year, also doing race meetings and corrective work with the vets.

Both of us grew up on the West Coast of the S.I, where we  went through the Pony Club ranks then on to instructing.

Our lives took a very different turn upon leaving the Coast and going to work and muster on the 15,000 hectare Waipouri Station above Lawrence in Otago.Trevor was the farrier for all the stations 28 horses. Our boss was the wonderful horseman Jim O'Donnell, who was also a keen breeder.Outram was the home of the well known endurance stallion 'Silver King',to whom I put my mare. This was the start of what was to be known as 'Roanoake' Stud.

The late '70s' saw us back on the West Coast, managing a 5,000 acre block for the then Lands & Survey,on what is known as Blair's ,a part of Bell Hill.Trevor was spending most weekends shoeing, and he also had developed a strong interest in Trail and Endurance riding. Many a trail ride was held at Blairs, along with mock hunts in the winter. At this time a special wee fella came into our lives-Poplicola,a purebred Arabian, by Lyric from Polenka .Cola was the foundation sire for our stud.Trevor broke Cola in and he attended many Pony Club courses, camps and treks. All the kids loved to get up on his back,as he was so well mannered.

Using registered mares,we would breed a small number of foals per year.At the time Trevor was attending block  farrier courses at Flock House,to further his training. The early '90's saw yet another move, this time to Marlborough. We brought along with us our  reg.sporthorse stallion,'Justification',very well known for his ability to leave excellent temperaments, movement and trainability. It was a very exciting time for the stud with his son 'Just George' sweeping all before him on the Dressage circuit, representing NZ,and being shortlisted for Sydney 2000,others by Justin reaching Advanced level.Justification also given european recognition, acceptance into their SH data base,a major feat by a NZ bred stallion!!By the late '90's with Justin now in his mid 20's,the search was on, this time for a Welsh colt-preferably a section B,-to use over purebred and the registered pony mares ,by Cola ,from earlier mares puchased from such studs as Glendale.

A new era had begun!
