Ripley Morris Men

About us

Ripley Morris Men were formed in 1924. The side flourished until the early 1950's and was then re-formed in 1981. The side continues to thrive today and recently celebrated its 21st anniversary; all be it a year late but that wouldn't be Ripley would it.

Morris Dancing is an ancient pagan ritual and its ancestory is a matter of much debate, however it is thought that the bells and handkerchiefs frighten away evil spirits which ensure that the crops grow and children are plentiful. Ripley tend, simply, to scare anything away.

The dancers are assisted (hindered more like) by a likely bunch (left), The Fool, Molly, and Horace the Unicorn, who is depicted on the Ripley Coat of Arms.

This photo was taken in Lubersac in the Limousin, France, on one of our many cultural exchanges. Who knows what they thought of this lot!

No Morris side would be without its faithful musicians either to accompany the dancers.
