The Saturday 1st XI play in the Premier Division of the Reading Football League.
The team is managed by Anthony Howlett, and Ant's assistant manager is Colin Bown.
Rides aims this year are simple, to stay in the Premier Division and to enjoy a good cup run hopefully ending in success and some silverware.
Anthony has assembled a very skillful, young and commited squad this year, and has high hopes of his young superstars. Chairman Colin Brown believes that the Rides Saturday 1st team can really go places this year, and with a lot of hard work and a pinch of good luck we could be seeing Senior division football at Rides within the following few seasons. The combination of youth and experience will mean a good balance of players across the park, with players returning following the triumphant previous season, the omens are all in Rides favour
James Brown (no not the musician), is the team's very own assistant referee (linesman), James is himself a footballer but has decided to have a year off and is running the line for the team. All the guys on the team appreciate James help on match days, and as he is one of the fairest linesman you could ever meet, he never gets accused of cheating! Which is more than can be said for some other teams in our league, if only all the linesman were as fair and honest and James.
When Anthony Howlett took over the managerial duties of the team 3 seasons ago, his aim was simple PROMOTION. In his first season in charge Ant took the team to mid table, a fair position considering the in-consistent form the team showed, and no one had any real complaints. The following season from memory (im getting old!) was a good one, we finished well into the top half missing out on promotion but enjoying a good cup run and everyone was confident of better things to come from Ant and his team, last season 2004/2005 was Rides best by far, a top 3 finish only marred by 2 embarrassing defeats at the hands of league champions Rabsons, an injury to kelvin Ratcliffe looked to spell diasaster but Rides rallied together and produced some stunning displays at times with every player in the squad really performing above and beyond the call of duty, with 2 games to go we had done it, we were promoted but the season was far from over.
The last game of the season saw Rides take on Finchampstead (local rivals) at their place, we knew it would be a good pitch so our fluid style of football was bound to shie through, we were 2nd at the time and Finch were 2 points behind, it was a must win game for both teams! Despite a battling performance, we just didnt perform, we lost 2-1 and it could have been a lot worse it wasnt for a late penalty save by Wayne Box and some astute defending by Lea Claridge and Marc Brown. Dissapointed but downheartened, the season was finally over, we were promoted and Premir Divison football was here to stay, or so we hoped. I have given a very brief insight into a few of the players so lets go and meet them all, next page is the one you have all been waiting for, its the player profiles!
