Troop 042 was founded on 3/11/08
We are a new troop that started with 5 members.
The founding members were Ryan K. Will M. Andrew J, Patrick K and Kyle G.
We currently have have 8 members.
Our patrol name is the Scorpions.
Our first activity was attending the 2008 Military Expo at Fort Snelling. We went to kiddy bootcamp and learned about all the vehicles and weapons the military uses. We saw the the old guard do their rifle drills. We saw a tank crush a car. We went in the airplanes. Take a look at the videos on this web page.
One of our first activities was a Lasagna dinner to raise money for equiptment for camp Manypoint. The Lasagna dinner was a success. We raised about $500. In conjuction with the Lasagna dinner we worked with a merit badge councilor and earned the Entrapanuer merit badge.
The first camp we went to was Manypoint over the week of the 4th of July 2008. We shot shotguns, .22rifles, bows and arrows, and threw Tomahawks. We worked as a troop threw the first class adventure. Most member of the Troop earned the photography, fingerprinting and Indian Lore merit badges at camp.
In August the troop went to its second camp at Sterns. We did some cooking and did the climbing tower.
In September 08 a number of boys went to the pheasants forever shooting event. We shot shotguns, .22 rifles, muzzlelouders and did archery. We saw championship hunting dogs work and the owner explained how he trains them. Some guys put on a shooting exhibition with dressed as cowboys using guns and powder from the 1800s.
On September 18th 2008 the first rank advancements were awarded to 3 Boys of Tenderfoot.
In the morning on Sunday October 6th we went to the national weather service. We saw a weather ballon launch. The weather service launches ballons 2 times a day. We took 6 classes to learn about weather. We learned about the different kinds of clouds. We learned how to read a weather map. We had a trivia at the end of the day. Our Troop got 3 place but we had fun we knew most of the answers. We completed most of the requirements for our weather merit badge during the day. All of the Scouts there launched a little ballon after the big one. It was pretty with all the colors in the air. You can check where the ballons landed by looking under the pictures on this website.
In the afternoon on Sunday October 6th we had our second lasagna dinner. It was a great turn out we had 83 people. We raise money for a new trairer. We had alot of fun and we met new people.
5 scouts earned our weather merit badges. We worked really hard to get them. The last thing we had to do was give a presentation to the troop.
On Saturday November 1st we helped a famly by raking their yard. This was a service project to help raise money for St. Richards church. Our racking was auctioned off at St. Richards church in the silent auction for 45 dollars. We made a family happy and had a good time raking.
On Saturday November 8th we went to earn our geneoligy merit badge at the Minnesota Geneoligical center. We had fun and learned alot. Some of us found out where our parents were born. We had a tour of the geneological center library. Most of us earned our merit badge. It was the 6th merit badge we have earned together!
On Saturday November 15th we had our first lock in. We helped the Webelos earn their fitness pin. We talked about how drugs are not healthy for them. We had alot of games planned for the Webelos. We played basketball, kickball and dodgeball. We stayed up untill 2 in the morning! We had pizza and Tang. We all had alot of fun.
At the next meeting after the lock in 5 of us were awarded our geneoligy merit badge. This was the first merit badge Charlie has earned. The next time we go to earn a merit badge we hope everyone from the troop will come. At the same meeting Andrew played the piano for the troop. He is working on the music merit badge. He played songs from star wars and the peanuts. He was so good he played another song for us. He will earn his merit badge after he does 3 more recietels.
After a long year of scouting we had potluck. A potluck is something when all the people come and bring different foods. At our potluck we had some good food. After we ate we went to the gym and played Basketball. There are alot of kids in the troop who are really good at Basketball. We all had alot to eat and all of us had some extra food to take home. Troop 042 is ready for another year of scouting and fun. We have alot of fun stuff planed for 2009. We plan on going back to Manypoint this year.
In our last meeting we started our latest merit badge drafting. Drafting is how people illustrate how a product is to be manufactured. Some drawings show how the top, side and front of the product will be. If you mess up on one of the measurements you will have to start all over. When we started drafting we drafted a Pinewood derby car. We had to measure it and then draw it. The merit badge will take four meetings to finish.
On January 9 2009 we went to earn our mamal study merit badge. First we started out by learning about the different classes of mamals. Then we each got two mice and we started to skin the mice. When we first started cuting the smell was not that bad. After we cut into where all of the organs are that is when it really started to smell. After we got the skin off we put a chemical that stops the skin from decaying and stapled it to a piece of card bord. We have not earned the merit badge yet we still need to take care of a mamal that lives by where we live.
Saturday 2/7/09 we did our second merit badge Saturday. Kids from troop 042 did disabilities awareness, art and the winter sports merit badge. We all had fun doing this because kids from other troops came and did the merit badges with us. The art merit badge was finished that day. People who did disabilities awareness still have two requirements to do. After we finished the merit badge session we got a piece of paper to fill out. It has questions on it that tell if you would recommend that merit badge to another scout. Come to our next merit badge Saturday in March.
At the cub scout pack 042 blue and gold dinner Charlie became a boy scout. His first merit badge was the genealogy merit badge. At the blue and gold he got his arrow of light and crossed the bridge into being a boy scout. He has been to many troop 042 meetings before as a weblo. Most of troop 043 was there to welcome him into his new troop.
We added another to our troop. His name is Nick and he is from pack 384 from Richfield. he crossed the bridge into boy scouts on February 23 2009. He cossed the bridge at the pack 384 blue and gold dinner.
At the last meeting of troop 042 two scouts became tenderfoot and one became seconded class. They went into their board of review and they came out their new ranks in boy scouts. They are the first two to earn a new rank.
At our last merit badge Saturday we did coin collecting and reptiles and amphibians for our merit badges. All of the kids in troop 042 that attended the merit badge session did collecting. After collecting we went to Wood Lake nature center to do the reptiles and amphibians merit badge. We learned how to tell a reptile from a amphibian.
One of the boys from troop 042 went to the coin collecting merit badge. We finised the whole merit badge in four hours. One of the requirements was to go and see a coin show. So during the merit badge break all of the boys went and saw the coin show across the building. Their were some coins that were worth thousands of dollars. After we saw the coin show we went and finished the merit badge
Troop 042 has had elections for our new patrol leader at out last meeting on March 29 2009. This happened at our last meeting.
