Catherine understood before this time ever came, there would be no promises, no tomorrows and no commitments for even one more day, and she knew this single weekend would change her forever.

The car’s wipers dashed the rain from the windshield and Catherine felt her breath swell in her chest as her mind shuffled through the memories of her life – wondering if there was any one single moment that brought her to where she was today.

Born in a small, quiet town in the hills of Tennessee, the Cress’ were a close family, and Catherine had always known how fortunate she was to have been born to Ben and Dorothy Cress.

The love of her parents and the close life she had with her sisters, Emily and Sarah, was all most country girls could want, but not Catherine. She had yearned for her own family and independence.

Being the oldest of the three, Catherine was the first one to leave home and that left Emily to help care for the youngest sister, Sarah.

Ten years, and two children later in an abusive marriage, she finally escaped to a quiet life with a new husband, a third child and thought she had been given a second chance at being happy – and most days she was.

“Life just has a way of wearing you down,” she heard herself say as she swerved the car to miss a rabbit in the road and realized the sound of the raindrops beating against the windshield almost matched the pounding of her heart.

With the children grown and gone out of the house to live their own lives and the recent loss of her father, Catherine was a mess.

Time seemed to be standing still but the odometer proved time and miles were passing while she pressed on through the pouring rain just as the sky was breaking to reveal a very cloudy rain-filled morning – she only had three days.
