Rescue Wen Jian

Basic facts of Wenjian’s detention and labour camp sentence:

Wenjian Liang, 39, lives in Guangzhou, China with her husband Zhiyong Lin. Her sister Jane Liang is a Nottingham resident and British citizen

Wenjian Liang was taken away from her home in
Guangzhou, China on Saturday 10 February by over ten policemen in plain clothes while her family were spending time together with two other families (including 3 children) ahead of the Chinese New Year.

Her home was turned upside down by the police in their search, who took away Falun Gong materials and computers. Both Wenjian and her husband, who is also a Falun Gong adherent and a company director, were taken to Fanyu Detention Centre in Guangzhou City and denied meeting with relatives.

We learned on 12 March that Wenjian Liang and her husband

Zhiyong Lin have been sentenced to 2 years in a labour camp. All others taken away from their home on Saturday 10 February have received the same sentence, without trial.

In late April we learned that Wenjian and her husband Zhiyong had been moved to two separate forced  labour camps. Wenjian has been sent to Chaitou Xiaodao Female Labour Camp, where she was held for 14 months back in 2000/2001. Zhiyong has been sent to Huadu Male Labour Camp. Both camps are in Guangzhou, China. Their families still don't know the charges.

This arrest resembles numerous recent incidents where the communist regime targets educated Falun Gong adherents who could access the Internet, particularly the controlled Falun Gong and Quitting CCP websites.

These arrests are also thought to be part of the preparation for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The 2 year sentences effectively putting them away till after the Olympics.

Additional background about a previous labour camp sentence of Wenjian:

In 2000, Wenjian Liang was sent to a labour camp in China for 2 years without trial for petitioning against the persecution of Falun Gong. She was then 32 and worked as an accountant. She suffered ill-treatment and was at least once tortured in the camp.

Our concerns:

  1. The regime should inform the relatives the legal basis for the detention and the sentence particularly the charges for the labour camp sentences
  2. Wenjian and Zhiyong and all others detained should be released immediately if the charges are without a sound legal basis
  3. Families are denied contact with Wenjian Liang and Zhiyong Lin
  4. Families are not informed of the detentions and the labour camp sentences
  5. The welfare of their child who is about 13 this year
  6. Their welfare in detention

The following is a copy of the petition

I, the undersigned, have been informed that Mrs Wenjian Liang, sister of Nottingham resident Jane Liang, was taken away from her home in Guangzhou, China, on Saturday 10th February 2007 by ten or more plain clothes policemen while she and her family were spending time with two other families (including 3 children) ahead of the Chinese New Year.

I was informed that both Wenjian Liang and her husband Zhiyong Lin were detained at Fanyu Detention Centre in
Guangzhou City, for “illegal gathering”, and weeks later sentenced, without any trial, to 2 years in a forced labour camp. Their families in China are denied all forms of access to them as well as information of their sentences.

I urge you to ensure the safety and well-being of Wenjian Liang and her husband, to allow their relatives to visit them and to prevent any form of ill-treatment or torture.

I further urge you to explain to their relatives, including Mrs Jane Liang, the legal basis of their detention and the forced labour camp sentences, and to ensure that they are released immediately if there is no sound legal basis.
