Four Feet in Heaven- Rescuers Voices and Inspiration

Do you have a favorite saying or poem that's related to the world of Rescue or Animals? Has a piece of literature inspired you? Have you heard something that you'd like to share? If you send them to us we will publish them to inspire all of us. All submissions should be sent to mailto:RescueRegistry@Live.com.

And, please, if you are not the author, include the authors name and the source of your submission. As authors ourselves we know how frustrating it can be to see your work credited to another individual.

One last thing. Occasionally a piece is copyrighted, which means permission must be obtained before it can be reprinted. We ask that you make sure any submissions are in the public domain, or have the proper releases if they are privately held. We're not very rich and can't afford to lose a lawsuit for more than, oh, $2.76, over a copyright infringement dispute. Thanks.

Four Feet in Heaven

Your favorite chair is vacant now...
No eager purrs to greet me.
No softly padded paws to run
Ecstatically to meet me.

No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
Will say it's time for feeding.
I've put away your bowl, and all
The things you won't be needing;

But I will miss you little friend,
For I could never measure
The happiness you brought me,
The comfort and the pleasure.

And since God put you here to share
In earthly joy and sorrow;
I'm sure there'll be a place for you
In Heaven's bright tomorrow...

Your Friend

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful, and true until the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

God Asked the Feline Spirit

And God asked the feline spirit
"Are you ready to come home?"

"Oh, yes, quite so," replied the precious soul.
"And as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself."

"Are you coming then?" asked God
"Soon," replied the whiskered angel.
"But I must come slowly
My human friends are troubled
For You see, they need me, quite certainly."

"But don't they understand?" asked God,
"That you will never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined, for all eternity,
That nothing is created or destroyed,
It just is... forever and ever and ever?"

"Eventually they will understand," replied the cat,
"For I will whisper in their hearts - that I am always with them

A Pet's Loss

In your heart, you probably realize that in time the sadness you are feeling will fade.
For now, just know that it's all right to hurt...
I hurt with you.
It's all right to cry...
I share your tears.
It is only through crying that you learn what it's really like to laugh...
only after feeling sadness can you really experience joy.
So allow yourself to feel what comes natural...
but know that someday life will be better...
it will be easier to smile.

I Only Wanted You

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

A Prayer For Animals

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated;
for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put death.

We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Cat's Eulogy (With Love)

To My Mom & Dad With Love

Don’t be sad you had to end my pain
And know that you will see me once again
God’s given me a place to wait for you
And you know what? He says He loves me too!!!

There’s lots of different critters all around
In Heaven there’s no evil to be found
So all of us just seem to get along
And Angels serenade us with their songs

People here are kind and stroke my fur
And they all seem to love it when I purr
I’m no longer sick so I am glad
Please don’t fill your days by being sad

I haven’t really gone that far away
And I’m really looking forward to the day
That we can be together up above
In this land of peace and happiness and love

 Tribute To A Best Friend

Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor....
then I remember,
it's where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.

Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound....
then I remember,
It's where your paws would joyously abound.

A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can't be yours....
your golden voice is still.

But I'll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall.

I'll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
until we meet above.

I Am An Animal Rescuer

I am an Animal Rescuer
My job is to assist God's creatures
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought, or selection
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times
and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends
I don't often use the word "pet"
I notice those lost at the road side
And my heart aches
I will hand raise a field mouse
And make friends with a vulture
I know of no creature unworthy of my time
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven
But I believe there are
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind
We may be masters of the animals
But the animals have mastered themselves
Something people still haven't learned
War and abuse makes me hurt for the world
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind
We are a quiet but determined army
And making a difference every day
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan
Nothing more rewarding than saving a life
No higher recognition than watching them thrive
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play
Who only days ago was too weak to eat
I am an Animal Rescuer
My work is never done
My home is never quiet
My wallet is always empty
But my heart is always full
In the game of life
We have already won.

-A poem by Annette King Tucker (with thanks to our friend Jeanie for sharing this with us)

This is a prayer for little paws
All up and down the land,
Driven away, no friendly voice
Never an outstretched hand.
For weary paws of little beasts
Torn and stained with red,
And never a home and never a rest,
Till all little beasts are dead.
Oh God of homeless things look down
And try to ease the way
Of all the little weary paws
That walk the world today.

“When you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey – a journey that will bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet also tests your strength and courage.

If you allow, the journey will teach you many things, about life, about yourself, and most of all, about love.

You will come away changed forever, for one soul cannot touch another without leaving its mark.”       Author unknown.

When people ask me why I or we do this, here is my response.

"What we do in animal rescue is really not too much different from battlefield triage-we carry the fight forward, we save as many as we can knowing full well we cannot save them all. Animal welfare types or as I like to call them 'Humaniacs' can be easily spotted by the pet hair on their clothing, their over-sized hearts, their usually empty or near-empty bank accounts. Another hallmark is their resolve to make a difference for an animal that needs their help despite or perhaps in spite of the person who created the problem."

A POEM TO MY FOSTER DOG
Copyright 1999/ by Diane Morgan

I am the bridge

Between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.

I am made of mush,
Because my heart melted when I saw you,
Matted and sore, limping, depressed,
Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.

For one little time you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand
I will love you with my whole heart
I will make you whole.

I am made of steel.
Because when the time comes,
When you are well, and sleek,
When your eyes shine,
And your tail wags with joy
Then comes the hard part.
I will let you go--not without a tear,
But without a regret.
For you are safe forever--
A new dog needs me now.

"Rescued Hearts"

Taking care of rescue dogs
Is something I do best.
I know because I've done it,
And I've surely passed the test.
The dogs I've bathed, the food I've fed,
The vacuuming I've done,
And all to watch a frightened soul
Sit dreaming in the sun.
My own dogs I've neglected,
But I tell them everyday
That I love and cherish each of them
Though a new dog's come to stay.
I know they understand this,
For in their eyes I see
The love that I have given them
Come shining back at me.
Some people think I'm crazy,
Some others think I'm great.
But very few can understand
What really is at stake.
If I can love and help a dog
To find a better way,
My own life is much richer,
I look forward to each day.
So now you know my secret,
It's there for all to see,
The love I give, the life I save,
I do it all for me.

The Reason (to you from all your rescue dogs)

I would've died that day if not for you.
I would've given up on life if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear if not for your gentle hands.
I would have left this life believing that all humans don't care
Believing there is no such thing as fur that isn't matted
Skin that isn't flea bitten
Good food and enough of it
Beds to sleep on
Someone to love me
To show me I deserve love just because I exist.
Your kind eyes, your loving smile, your gentle hands
Your big heart saved me...
You saved me from the terror of the pound,
Soothing away the memories of my old life.
You have taught me what it means to be loved.
I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair
Why you do it
When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes
You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter
Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.
I tell you with the gratitude and love that shines in my eyes
In the best way I know how
Reminding you why you go on trying.

I am the reason
The dogs before me are the reason
As are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given
We would die if not for you.

The Cat's  Prayer

Anonymous

Although I am too proud to beg, and may  appear to be a very independent creature, I ask for your loving care and attention. I rely on you for my well being much more than you may realize.

This I promise you, my benefactor, that I will not be a burden on you  nor will I demand more of you than you care to give.

I will be a quiet peaceful island of serenity for you to gaze upon; a  soft soothing body to caress, and I shall purr with pleasure to rest your weary ears.

Since I am a gourmet who appreciates different taste sensations, I pray you will give me a variety of nutritious foods and fresh water daily.

You know dear friend, how I love to go. Allow me, I pray, a warm sheltered place where I can rest peacefully and feel secure.

If I am wounded in battle or suffering from disease, please tend me  gently, and see that loving and competent hands treat me.

Please protect me from the inhuman humans who would hurt and torture me for their own amusement. I am accustomed to your gentle touch and am neither always suspicious nor swift enough to avoid such malicious acts.

In my later years when my senses fail me and my infirmities become too great to bear, allow me the comfort and dignity that I desire for my closing  days and help me gently in my pain or passing.

Hear this prayer, my dear friend, my fate depends on you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them,

but to be indifferent to them; that is the essence of inhumanity.

The Meaning of Rescue

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked into my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage,
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.   Hmmmm ...

Yes, there it is, right on the top,
Let's unpack Loneliness, heartache and Loss,
And there by my bed hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Or will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
And never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

Here is an artical I wrote about 2 hours after I lost my beloved George. Get the tissues ready!

THE LIFE OF A CARER/RESCUER IN FERRET WELFARE

Today, I lost the best little buddy one could ever ask for, my George.
George & Doris were our first rescues when we joined Ferret Welfare. They were 2 of the worst cases of neglect we had ever seen. They were a pair who were left in a house when the owners moved out. They were almost dead when found by a realestate agent. When we first saw them we lost our hearts...again.
They became friends with our first ferret Ralph.
George & I had a special bond from day one.I guess it was because he had to fight illness and pain for most of his life.He was just so special.
We had a routine.I would get up early.George would be waiting. He'd go to the bathroom and then come sit on my lap while I told him stories. He often decided it was time to get up by coming into the bedroom, hopping onto the bed and just lay down across my face.
Through time many ferrets came & went. Some were spoilt, some were abandoned and some were just not wanted any more. Many were subjected to abuse. We loved them all, each and every one. There is something about the love of a ferret that you just can't explain. I guess thats why we decided on a ferret shelter.
The heartache I feel after loosing our Ralph in September 2007 to cancer, then my beautiful Doris in May 2008 to Lymphoma, my George 2 weeks after Doris to cancer. I wondered if the pain would ever end.
If there is one thing I now understand,it is this.
I used to say that the ferrets were so lucky to have us to love and care for them. I know know it is the other way around. The love we got from not only our Ralph,Doris & George but from all the precious little ones that came into our lives.

Well it's not just the ferrets who are lucky.
It is I who am lucky.I know the feeling of absolute, unconditional love and I will never forget that.
As much as I cry and hurt I would not change what we do for the world.

To my George...you can now DOOK with your beloved Doris and your buddy Ralph. There will be no more pain.

I will love you always.

WAS THAT YOU

As I got up this morning I felt a brush against my leg
Was that you

I just felt a soft nudge against my hand
Was that you

I felt a soft breath on my skin
Was that you

The little ones were watching something
Was that you

When I heard the wind whisper “I love you”
Was that you

The blanket moved and no one was there
I know it was you.

When the wind chimes chimed with no breeze
I know it was you

When there is a sudden breeze in the calm
I know it was you

When I feel that special paw on my face
I know it was you

When so many strange things happen
I know it was you.

Those strange little paw prints in the snow
I know it was you

I wondered if it was you, but I knew it was and is you
Forever in my heart and every beat of it

We are Rescue

Until you have held a tiny puppy in your arms as it kissed your face with slobbery puppy breath and felt the love,
Until you have held an injured or severely ill dog in your arms and felt their pain
Until you have looked into the eyes of a tired aging senior dog and felt their wisdom,
And until you have seen and understood the look in your dogs eyes that tell you their time on earth with you is over.... and you humanely let them go,

You will never understand the life of a rescuer.

We find beauty in the most incomprehensible places and the otherwise homely faces.
It is our gift to see beyond the dirt, terror, sadness and defeat and find the true soul that lies within.

The Animals' Savior

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...

the cast-offs of human society.
I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread,

sadness and betrayal.
And I was angry.
"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"
God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly.
"I have done something," He replied.
"I created You."

Thoughts of a Feral

by Annette Easdon

Dedicated to all the kind and caring people who give the lonely ferals a little care, a little love, and a little hope.

I sit beneath the bushes as she fills my dish each day,
I only venture out to eat when she has gone away,
I know it will upset her when I turn away and hide,
As every day she tries her best to get me by her side.
I wish that I could let her know that I don't want to run,
And hope that she will understand it's nothing that She's done.
I'd like to have her stroke me and pat my weary head,
But fear will overcome and I'll run and hide instead.
For all the kindly people who feed the strays each day,
I pray the Lord will care for them as they have cared for me.
