SWIFT GROUND SPIDER

12th January 2007

Found at Robina Hospital - GOLD COAST

OBSERVATIONS: Readily fed, unable to climb. Very fast.

Identification
Full size - 20 cent piece; leg diameter - pin. Spotted black head and body; legs black and orange.

Habitat
Gardens, open ground. Most common summer. Many species Australia-wide.

Web
Rover; very fast runner.

Bite
Mild local pain.

 

BROWN HUNTSMAN

Found 31st January 2007

At our home on the GOLD COAST

OBSERVATIONS: Only newly acquired but very fast mover. No food offered as yet.

Identification
Full size - hand span; leg diameter - pin to "o". Mottled brown abdomen and legs; carapace (head) with black X. Crab-like legs. Fast. Hunts easily on ceilings or walls.

Habitat
Houses, forested areas, gardens, rainforest. Most common summer. Eastern Australia.

Web
Rover.

Bite
Ready biter; mild local pain

 

 

GOLDEN ORB SPIDER

 

Found in the courtyard on 31st January at our home on the GOLD COAST

OBSERVATIONS: Has built quite an impressive web and we are just leaving her be.

Golden Orb spider

Nephila edulis

 

 

Identification
Full size hand plus; leg diameter at mid-point - letter "O". Long yellow and black legs.

Habitat
Warm moist areas - gardens, trees, paths. Most prevalent summer. Eastern Australia.

Web
Strong orb web; about 1 m; strung between trees, around sunny parts of buildings. Strong golden silk. Large web often traps small animals like Silvereyes.

Bite
Only if forced.
