In the following pages you will find
different aspects of Renfrew, from its history and the
creation of the Royal Burgh to the Renfrew of
shipbuilders and others who lived in small tenement flats,
attended the local schools and churches, and the many
pubs! Entertainment was a visit to the Regal or Moorpark
Cinema, a go-as-you-please in the Robertson Park, a game of
putting or bowls or listening to the local Brass Band,
and occasionally going to 'the shows'. Renfrew even boasted
its own football team, the Renfrew Juniors, still in action
today. Children were encouraged to join the Brownies and
Girl Guides, the Boy Scouts or the Boys Brigade and attend
one of the many different Sunday schools around the
town.
These pages are a tribute to the ordinary
working folk who lived there, whose hard work 'fed the
weans', many generations of my own family among them.
I hope you enjoy your visit here and I thank
all those good people who generously gave us their time,
their love and lots of 'pieces and jam' in our childhood.
Renfrew was a good place to grow up and they gave us a great
deal in spite of 'the war'.
This website is dedicated to Isabella
Hunt Andrew, my mother and Barbara Diven Scott Andrew, my
grandmother and all the good friends and relatives who made
our lives so pleasant.
In the Schools section you will find some
old school pictures. If you have more and would like to
share them with us, please email me to add them in. If you
find yourself in one of the pictures please let me know who
you are and where you are. If you have any interesting
anecdotes about Renfrew please send them to me to add in.
Above all - Haste ye back!
