People often ask me why I write what I write. My response is usually: "Why wouldn't I?"
I don't remember ever being your typical little girl who wanted to be Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. I wanted to be Malecifent, and turn into a dragon when I got annoyed with people. I wanted the villain to win the fight. Vampires weren't necessarily romantic to me, but they certainly did seem to have a lot of fun.
I enjoy writing dark fiction, be it erotic, non-erotic or somewhere in between. That's not to say I don't enjoy a good love story, but I'm afraid I never got around to taking Fluff 101 in Writer's School. You will find cheerful romances among my works, but they are humorous and absurd, not cuddly. I write for people living everyday lives, who want everyday characters that they can envision sitting down to dinner or a cup of coffee with. My heroes and heroines tend to get themselves into all sorts of scrapes and tight spaces. My job is to get them out again, and help them find love (or a pleasing stand-in) along the way.
I think that A Certain Way was an excellent start to my endeavors. It has some of the angst and drama that I enjoy, but at heart, A Certain Way is the story of someone who is finally correcting her past mistakes and realizing that her worth is not determined by someone else' perception of her. It is a sweet love story, but it has some bitter truth underneath the sugar, and that's the way I like my stories to read- bittersweet.
If a story doesn't stay with you, it isn't a good story, in my opinion. I hope that I have succeeded in my goal to write stories that engage the reader, and offer them a chance to look at the inner workings of people very like themselves, living in extraordinary circumstances and situations.
In contrast, I have two other recently published short stories in an anthology from eXcessica. The stories are titled Butterfly Wings and Alabama Motel Room, and I don't know that it can even correctly be classified as a romance. Where A Certain Way is about opening your eyes to new beginnings, both of these shorts are a darker side to the same coin- the ultimate test of love and loyalty, and letting go- in whatever way will get you through the night.
With luck and grace, I hope to be bringing you many, many more stories and novels over the years. I am also happy to hear from my readers, and I welcome your opinions and comments on my work. Feel free to email me at renee.blaine@hotmail.com, or leave a message on my Guestbook.
