What are Chakras?

The
human body contains hundreds of locations where there is focused and
concentrated energy. There are seven major energy centers,
commonly referred to as "chakras." Chakra is a Sanskrit word which
means
"wheel." The chakras are similar to wheels in that they are spinning
vortexes of energy. They are centers of force located within our
etheric body, through which we receive, transmit, and process life
energies.
Each chakra in the body is recognized as a focal point for life-force
relating to spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental energies. The
chakras are the network through which the mind, body, and spirit
interact as one holistic system. The seven major chakras correspond to
specific aspects of our consciousness and have their own individual
characteristics and functions. Each has a corresponding relationship to
one of the various glands of the body's endocrine system, as well as to
one of the seven
colors of the rainbow spectrum.
The main purpose in working with
and understanding the chakras is to create integration and wholeness
within ourselves. In this way we bring the various aspects of our
consciousness from the physical to the spiritual, into a
harmonious relationship. Ultimately, we begin to recognize that the
various aspects of ourselves all work together, and that each aspect is
as much a part of the whole as the others. We must be able to
acknowledge, integrate, and accept all levels of our being.
To help us in the process of our unfolding it is most important to
understand that the chakras are doorways for our consciousness. They
are the doorways through which emotional, mental, and spiritual force
flow into physical expression. They are openings through which our
attitudes and belief systems enter into and create our mind/body
structure. The energy created from our
emotional and mental attitudes runs though the chakras and is
distributed to our cells, tissues and organs. Realizing this brings
tremendous insight into how we ourselves affect our bodies, minds, and
circumstances for better or for worse. To understand the chakras and
their relationship to our consciousness, is to better understand
ourselves. Understanding ourselves will enable us to make our choices
and decisions from a place of balance and awareness, rather than being
blindly influenced by forces we do not understand.

Other Minor Chakras:
There are hundreds of minor energy centers scattered throughout your
body, especially around the joints and other areas that move.
The following are three of the more interesting “smaller chakras” of the body:
“High Heart”
The “high heart” chakras are two symmetrical chakras
which inhabit the front of each shoulder
(forming an inverted triangle with the heart chakra). They support the heart chakra energy.
“Ground”
This chakra is thought to exist below the root chakra, at
the base of the feet (or between the feet).
It is our connection with
the earth and the very ground we walk upon. For people whose root
chakra is weak or unsteady, it sometimes helps to visualize energy here,
rising from the earth up into the feet and from there to the rest of
the body.
The colour of the grounding chakra is magenta.
“Thymus”
Located on the breastbone directly over the thymus gland, which feeds the immune system, this chakra has been introduced recently as relating to our connection to divine truth. This is where we can bring in the new energy to revitalize our tired planet, our lives, and our selves.
The thymus chakra is turquoise or a brilliant, pale
green-blue.
Crystals and gem stones have many healing properties and powers. Crystals focus energies from the earth and amplify our inner energies at chakra points. Rose quartz, amethyst and clear crystal quartz are naturally adapted for healing work. However different crystals are suitable for different types of work. Dark crystals remove pain and clear crystals are good for energizing and removing blockages but you need to experiment and find what works best for you.
Charging and cleansing healing crystals: crystals need to be cleansed and charged for healing work. Sprinkling them with salt, washing them in clear running water, and leaving them out in the sun or moonlight, removes negative energies. Use a clear pendulum-shaped crystal for charging your crystals, visualizing positive energy flowing into them.
It is believed that the right hand is controlled by the left side of the brain which tends to be the dominant, assertive side: therefore hold your energising crystals in your right hand for healing and use clockwise movements. To remove pain or to calm someone use the left hand, which is controlled by the right "feeling" side of brain, and use anti-clockwise movements.
Crystal chakra healing: use a clear pendulum-shaped (long cylinder shaped to focus energies) crystal passed over the body to locate the chakras, noting points where the pendulum spirals as this may indicate a chakra. If the pendulum feels heavy or vibrates slightly at any point then the chakra may be blocked.
If you decide to work on a particular chakra, you can hold a crystal of the appropriate colour over it. See chakras for colours, symptoms and location on the body. Pass the crystal over the area ruled by the chakra you need to work on and visualize health and positive energies.
