The Western concert flute is a transverse (or side-blown) flute that is closed at the top.
The standard flute is prominent in chamber and orchestral music. The piccolo is the smallest instrument in the orchestra. The alto and bass flute are only used in quiet passages because they can not be heard.
Sound is produced by the player directing the air stream across the hole of the mouthpiece.
The fingers of a flutist are placed on pads which open or close other holes, hopefully creating the sound you want. The flute it thought of as being sharply pitched, but at the high end of its range it is soft and mellow.
The piccolo is a small flute. Its name in Italian is "flauto piccolo" which means "small flute".
Also commonly used in Western orchestras is the piccolo, a small flute usually pitched an octave above the concert flute. Alto and bass flutes, pitched a fourth and an octave below the concert flute, are used occasionally.
The modern professional concert flute is generally made of silver, gold, or combinations of the two.
