Reelfoot Lake in Northwest Tennessee was created by a series of powerful earthquakes which ocurred in 1811 and 1812. What was once a heavily forested area was violently shaken and settled allowing waters to cover approximately 18,000 acres creating a beautiful lake. Nearly 200 hundred years old, the lake is home to huge largemouth bass, big slab crappie, gigantic channel catfish and quite possibly the largest bream or bluegill one will ever find. Reelfoot Lake offers the wildlife enthusiast and photographers and writers the scenery and stories of a life time. Come fish for the catch of your life and explore areas you never dreamed of seeing. Fish for slab crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill or bream, catfish or go for the monster blue catfish and stripers on the nearby Mississippi River. Great crappie fishing begins when the water temperatures start cooling in early fall and continue right on through winter and really peaks during pre-spawn from late February through March, April, May and into June and even July. The creel limit is 30 per person with no size limit for crappie. The winter months of December and January offer some great cold water crappie and there is less boat traffic and competition for the hot spots. Winter crappie fishing is so overlooked and should be a consideration for better deals on lodging and some great catches!
Bass fishing is great just about year round with the prime time being spring of the year. Fall bass fishing turns on the bite when the fish are getting prepared for the coming winter. When I speak of bass, I mean BIG BASS!
Bluegill, also called bream, start the good bite about April and continue aggressively throughout May and June into July. However, they can be caught throughout the entire year.
The Channel Catfish are so heavily populated in Reelfoot Lake that they can be caught any time of the year with the prime season being during their spawn which runs from late April through the first of August. These big catfish can be caught by rod and reel, limb lines, yo-yo's, trot lines and by jugging with a variety of baits.
If one wants some real excitement, join me for a striper trip on the Mighty Mississippi River. The stripers live in the strong currents and when they attack a lure, believe me, the fight is on! You don't want to miss this opportunity.
Or, if you want to catch big ole Mississippi River blue catfish and relax while floating the river, book a float trip. On these float trips we bait 35 or 40 individual jugs, which I call "blocks", and pitch them into the current and float downstream with them, watching for the sudden attack by a huge blue catfish. Catfish in the 10 and 20 pound range are fairly common with some going into the 40's and up to the 80's. Some blue catfish have been brought to the boat weighing in excess of 100 pounds. The bait of choice is a "secret formula" which Captain Ray might share with you if you book a trip. The river catfishing is great all through spring, summer and fall and even in the winter, weather permitting.
The guide boat is a fully rigged, deep V style, walley type Ranger. It is extremely comfortable and safe. The boat is also equipped with a Porta Potti.
