All program are open to all Redwood students regardless of grade and math level. Nominal fee and parent volunteering are required to join. A celebration/award ceremony party is planned in May where students and volunteers are honored. The program's success relies heavily on parent involvement.
We award 10 trophies per 30 student class for MathOlympiads, MathCounts, and AMC. Click here for the 2004-2005 Redwood Afterschool Math award list.
MathOlympiads (MEOMS) - Open to all but limited to the number of coaches. Max 35 students are per class/team. Weekly class is held on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:45 pm from September till March. 2004-2005 had two 6th grade teams, one 7th grade team, and one 8th grade team. Top 10 students will receive a trophy based on a 30 student class.
MathCounts (the most competitive Junior High math competition consists of Chapter, State, and National competitions) - Open to all but requires qualifying before joining. Class is limited to 30 students. Weekly class is held on Mondays from 3:30-5:00pm with homework starting in September. In end of December, 8 students will be selected to represent Redwood for the Chapter MathCounts competition. The selection is based on 4 tests (80%) and homework (20%). Only those selected students will continue training till February or March depending on qualifying for State competition or not.Top 10 students in class will receive a trophy. Students score at least 75% on homework and with full attendance will receive a medal.
The Chapter/State/National contest consists of Sprint (30 problems in 40 mins. No calculator allowed), Target (2 problems per page in 6 mins for 4 pages of total 8 problems, calculator allowed), and Team (10 problems in 20 mins solved in a team of 4. Calculator allowed). The Countdown round in Chapter and State are for fun but is used to determine top 10 in National.
AMC 8 - Open to all but limited to the number of coaches. Weekly class is held on Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm for about 10 sessions. Top 10 students will receive a trophy.
AMC 10/12 - It's the continuation of AMC8. Join by doing well in AMC8. Max one class of 30 students. Weekly class is held from 3:30-5:30pm for about 6 sessions. Top 10 students will receive a trophy.
Harker Math Invitational - Invitation only by doing well in MathCounts, AMC, and/or MathOlympiads in that order. Only students participating in the afterschool-math program are invited. Max 7 students per team and max two teams per grade per school are allowed, i.e, max 42 students. Four to five weekly practice sessions from 3:30-5:30pm. All participants will receive a medal.
