The 'Archive of Memory' was created to serve as a catalyst and mediator of memory for both the anti - Apartheid veterans of Red Location and the museum visitors. The installation which is a replication of a shack and an environment typical of Red Location is serving as a backdrop to an interactive oral history project which was designed by the Red Location Museum to interrogate collective, cultural and social memory as an embodiment of contemporary Apartheid memorial.
Community Veterans Mr Mgqabi, Mr Hina, Mr Thlou, Mr Mzi Weni and Mrs Lilian Diedericks are scheduled to share their very interesting oral history over the next 6 months on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10h00 to 13h00 - with the first session being launched on
LIVE TOYI-TOYI PERFORMANCES - WEDNESDAYS
The 'Struggle and Memory' Exhibition depicts the control of township residents by colonial and apartheid authorities and their resistance to this oppression. Community members were on the forefront in the resistance to apartheid rule, and the exhibitions reflects their culture of resistance through posters, freedom songs, dances, pamphlets and banners.
The public will now have a unique opportunity to interact with community members in the Struggle and Memory Exhibition through a series of live toyi-toyi's to be performed on Wednesdays and Fridays between 10h00 to 13h00. The toyi-toyi performers are Mvuleni Grootboom, Givy Qumba, Mary Seti and Nontuthuzelo September who will render their first show on
