Chapter One:
Well not just any
plants, three to be specific. First, you should probably know Pomona always dreamed of having children. She
wanted to teach them about plants and flowers; how to properly take care of
them, their many uses for magical maladies, and to appreciate the beauty of
nature. Although she fell in love once, Pomona
never married.
The man she loved
Vertumnus Brussels, who also loved Herbology, was on his way to meet Pomona for dinner when
something horrid happened. Vertumnus came to the cross streets of the
restaurant, and he saw Pomona
sitting waiting for him on the outdoor veranda. He called to her “Pomona!” She turned
around and smiled at the sight of her love. He was carrying a bouquet of the
most exotic flowers in the wizarding world, the Western Atypical Lily or W. A. L.,
and the thing that made these Lilies such a rarity is that the majority of them
grew in the mountainous areas of the west where the giants live. Although
giants love meat, they are not only carnivores. They are known to often eat the
W.A.L. in order to help with their digestion, thus causing a shortage. On top
of that the Lily is held in high regard because it constantly changes color and
patterns as well. The W. A. L. is most often used to ward off dragons from
gardens, and I once read that muggles use a fake person stuffed with straw for
the same purpose. Oh, I am getting off topic. Pomona saw Vertumnus coming.
What happened next
was something that no one expected, the building across from the restaurant
exploded. Apparently the owner of the sweet shop across the street had stood up
to the Death Eaters who came recruiting there, and well they reacted rather
harshly. The sweet shop owner, Mr. Graham Cane, was brave not only because he
stood up to them, but because he took them down with him when they attacked.
When the shop exploded Vertumnus got caught in it and was taken straight to St.
Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. What Pomona
never knew was that day was the day Vertumnus was going to ask Pomona to be his bride.
Pomona was with Vertumnus at the hospital
when he woke up. Before she apparated to St. Mungo’s she looked down and saw
the three W.A.L. buds laying there in the street. She lovingly picked them up,
put them in her bag, and apparated. When she arrived at the hospital, she found
out that Vertumnus was on the fourth floor. The fourth floor is for victims of
Spell Damage. When Pomona
finally found his room the door was locked, which is never a good sign as,
unlike muggle hospitals, St. Mungo’s has an open door policy. “Alohomora,” Pomona spoke. Opening the
door she was shocked to find nothing. “Nothing!” she thought. “What could this
mean?” she spoke aloud. As she turned around she found Vertumnus huddled in a
corner. “Vertumnus, are you okay?” Pomona
whispered. “Asha dela orka uba telavoo,” Vertumnus mumbled back. “What did you
say?” spoke Pomona.
“ASHA DELA ORKA UBA TELAVOO!” he shouted. Vertumnus got up and continued to
shout this mumbo jumbo that made no sense at all. Then he crept toward Pomona, she backed away
in fear. Pomona
was about to grab her wand to defensively knock him unconscious, when all of
the sudden he convulsed violently. Unlike normal convulsions that would throw
one to the floor, he began to levitate in mid-air. He was still screaming “ASHA
DELA ORKA UBA TELAVOO!” He began to spin wildly, and glow bright orange when he
collapsed. “Healer, I need a healer in here!” Before a healer had time to enter
the room, she noticed something in Vertumnus’ hand. It was note. She took the
note from his hand. The healer came in checked on Vertumnus and diagnosed that
he was too far gone to return. Pomona
cried and left the room.
Pomona sat in the waiting area, tears pouring
from her eyes. She opened the note she had found. She read
Pomona,
I am writing this now because I fear for my
life. They just brought me into St. Mungo’s. Those Death Eaters from the sweet
shop were brought in here the same time as me. If they attack me, they probably
won’t stop until I am gone or driven to insanity. Their names are . . . there’s
no time remember I love you! They are here!
The tears in her eyes evaporated
into rage. She ran to the front reception area and demanded to know where the
Death Eaters from earlier were. The receptionist, Anita Pulse, said “I’m not
supposed to tell anyone, but they escaped earlier.” “Who were they?” Pomona steamed. The
receptionist said “no one knows, they used a powerful memory charm while in the
hospital causing any witch, wizard, or muggle within all of Great Britain to
forget them if they had seen them in the last 48 hours.” “Then why do I
remember them?” asked Pomona.
“Do you remember specifically what they looked like?” asked Anita. “I remember
there were four, no five of them. I remember there were three women and two
men. They were wearing masks, but one of the women’s hair was sticking out of
her hat. It was a long curly strand of ginger hair.” Anita had a look of
amazement on her face. “If you had been hit with the memory charm, you would
not remember that much!” Anita stated. “What good can any of that information
do for me? There are at least a million witches in Great Britain with ginger hair. Pomona sighed. “Well it’s
more information than anyone else has about them” Anita offered consolingly.
Pomona decided she needed to go. She told
Anita to not tell anyone that she remembers, and she agreed. “You never know
who you can trust.” Pomona
said with a raised eyebrow. When Pomona
returned home she went to her greenhouse, her favorite part of the house. She
was trying to cheer herself up. Her greenhouse was the largest greenhouse in a
domestic area. The glass ceiling of the greenhouse rose high to the same height
as the Whomping Willow at Hogwarts. It was so large that there was enough room
to have eight distinct sections. The first section was for trees. It resembled
a forest, and was filled with every type of known tree you could think of. From
the muggle favorites: Weeping Willows, with their beautiful draping greenery, Palm
trees, with their coconuts and high leaves, and Redwoods, towering above all
other trees being the highest known muggle tree out there, to wizard wonders:
Tree-houses, great for housing with their built-in windows and furnishing of
furniture, the orange, purple and blue Whimsy Vines, trees with sweeping vines
that used to be used for transportation until they were outlawed because Enid
Relpme was launched beyond the mountains and was attacked by giants, and Amore
Wreaths, with branches shaped like hearts these are often used to magically
etch the names of a boy and a girl who are in love into. At the sight of this
tree with the initials P.S. and V.B. within a heart she whipped a tear from her
eye and moved on into the next section.
The second section
consists of water plants all stored beneath a large pool of water. These plants
included Seaweed and Water Lilies. Of coarse there are also Smeakle Nets, which
are great organic nets that are strong enough to catch most fish, and
Aquablossums, a favorite of the Merpeople as a delicacy, but for wizards they
are mostly used in making an astringent for brooms.
The third and
fourth sections were originally for Glistening Gobble Roses, Moonflowers, and
the like, but unfortunately the Devil’s Snare that resided in the fifth
section, for deadly, dangerous, and destructive plants, had taken over all
three sections with its vines.
The sixth section
was not affected by the Devil’s Snare however, because of the Sunlit
Silverbells that were planted by Pomona
as a defense against the D.S.
The seventh
section contained herbs and spices necessary for concocted the most excellent
of potions. There was Belladonna, Rosemary, Nightshade, Fluxweed, and of coarse
Gillyweed, no true Herbologist would be without it.
The eighth section
is where Pomona
grows her vegetables and fruits. A rather large Pumpkin patch is present as
well as an assortment of muggle favorites from Carrots to Cabbage. She even keeps
a few Firemelons, can be quite troublesome if you drop them, and a couple of
Greenberry bushes, eat the ones on the front and you fly without a broom, eat
the ones on the back and you sprout a tail.
Pomona decided to sit down for a spell at her
workstation. As she sat down and opened her bag, she saw the three W.A.L. that
Vertumnus had bought her. Tears began to flow again. She quickly wiped them
away and thought to herself. “What am I going to do? How will I ever find out
who did this to Vertumnus? Although I am not that old, there is no way I can go
undercover to discover who did this. Hmm” As she continued to mull it over she
suddenly heard a “POP!”
There right before
Pomona stood
Millicent Bagnold, the Minister of Magic. “Madame Minister, what are you doing
here?” asked Pomona.
“Miss Sprout it has come to my attention that you are aware of some information
regarding the Death Eaters from the attack this morning.” Millicent inquired.
“Y-Yes” Pomona
stuttered with reluctantly all the time thinking, “Anita, what a little
bugger.” Millicent looked doubtful. “How can it be that no other Witch, Wizard,
or Muggle has any remembrance about it, but you do?” “I haven’t the foggiest?” Pomona stated with a
sense of sarcasm. “Well, seeing as you are the only one who remembers anything,
I wonder if you might help out the Ministry?” Millicent’s tone seemed to
change. She seemed desperate for help. Had she not been the woman of grace and
standing she was, she might have been begging. “How can I help? I am supposed to
take the position of Herbology Professor at Hogwarts next month.” Pomona said with concern.
Millicent said. “Well, our Department of Mysteries are swamped with work, as
you know this Death Eater attack is among many since three years ago when
You-Know-Who started his attacks, and our Ministry Undercover Aurors or MUA are
moving in the shadows to try and find a way to take “him” from power. In order
to make this investigation go forward, we, no I was wondering if you might be
willing to create a secret task force for us?” “Create a secret task force?
What do you mean? I would not even know how to do something like that.” Pomona spoke with
anxiety. “On the contrary according to you Hogwarts record, you were the only
person in your year to create a person out of plants in your Herbology class.
Dumbledore has informed as well that you person actually still resides in Great Britain.
I believe he said he lives as a Muggle working for their government in some
capacity or another.”
Pomona had a shocked look on her face. “That
was just an extra credit assignment that must be completed in order to be
eligible to work at Hogwarts. You may only become a Professor at Hogwarts in
your chosen subject if you turn in your extra credit before completing your
seventh year.” Millicent smiled. “Yes, while that is true, what is also true is
that no one who has ever completed the Herbology extra credit has ever conjured
a person who blended effortlessly into Muggle society or for that matter lasted
more than a year. The only challenge you might have, Pomona, is creating not only one, but three,
and they would have to be a team of the most skilled, undercover Aurors. They
would have to be able to fit into society and never be suspected to be more
than a normal Witch or Wizard.” Pomona’s
mind was floored. She had no idea what to think. Could she do this? Millicent
broke Pomona’s
thoughts. “Dark times are here Pomona.
We must each do our part to defend out Wizarding world. Will you do yours?” Pomona thought of
Vertumnus and how happy he was. Tears began to fill in Pomona’s eyes as she realized she was about
to agree to do her part to protect the world. Suddenly, being filled with
courage, bravery, truth, and the memory of Vertumnus, Pomona looked up at Millicent and said, “I’ll
do it!”
