National Cup Last 8's

9th March: U18 Men achieve 3rd in the country!

Despite a depleted squad hit also by illness of Dave Palmer the libero on the day the boys gave a very creditable performance in the Last 8’s.

This was new coach Toni Dimtrov’s first taste of the last 8’s here in England, very different from his experience in Bulgaria. Together he and the boys achieved our target and despite a disappointing performance in the semifinal the overall outcome was good.

In what turned out to be far the strongest pool on the day we faced Newcastle Staffs in our first game. With regular 4 hitter, Matt Bate pressed into service in the middle we failed for long periods of play to make the most of what should have been a mis-match in the centre of the court. Passing was inconsistent and the connection between setter Carl Butcher and the middle hitters was simply not there. At 24 – 20 in the first set Newcastle were confident of taking the lead, they failed however to side out 3 times and panicked into a time out at 24 – 23, Redhill stayed on task and won the set and match 2 – 0. Next game up was Tendring which Redhill cruised through, James Musk could have played Libero but coach Dimitrov kept him in reserve has his “golden substitute” and promoted Sam Moore from the U15’s to Libero duties from time to time. Both Grant Moreton and Pete Nash from the U 15’s saw court time during the first set. The margin of victory was comfortable and Lewis Grant gave Ronal Kokko a breather for parts of set 2.

Against Boswells the lads froze a little, coach Dimitrov had scouted the opposition and moved our rotation to put our bigger blockers like Adam Brewer and Ronald Kokko against the hitting of Nathan French. Trust the latter though to find his range from the service line, the guys went down fighting and all the squad saw court time as both coaches slowed the game down as Redhill came back from a large defecit in the first set.

All in all a good days performance, disappointing in the manner of our defeat in the Semi final but cetainly deserving of the title 3rd best U18 team in the country!
