World Environmental Managers

Reuse. Reduce. Recycle.

Help us start a recycling               program in the state of Utah!

Lexus Environmental Challenge

We are once again getting involved in our annual scholarship program. As you can probably already guess the theme, we are doing RECYCLING. This year has been one of our best years. We have partnered up with Waste Management in Salt Lake City in Utah and have had two (2) Representatives come to us from the Utah State Legislature asking us to sign a bill making recycling a major thing in Utah. With this program, we are able to get the word out to all those people that don't know about recycling and bring it to there homes, businesses, and other places of employment. With the money we win, we will put a little more than half of it back into the environment. The more we give back to the environment, the more the environment will give back to us. If you would like to donate to this cause, feel free to contact us. We will happily accept your donations. Thank you!

Plan

As a group, we are trying to set up a recycling program throughout the state of Utah.

Challenge

Enactment of this program may lead to some additional costs to school ditricts and charter schools due to the contracting or picking up of the recyclable materials. However, there will be some offsets to waste removal fees in the amount of recyclable material. Costs of any cost savings will be largely dependent on contract negotiations of school districts and charter schools with local waste removal and recycling services.

Recyclable Waste Products

We are working with businesses, organizations, coalition groups, state legislatures, and school districts to set up a substantle and organized recycling program.

  • Four Categories of paper: 1) Any white paper without a glossy finish, 2) Any colored paper without a glossy finish, 3) Glossy Paper (magazines, brochures, pamphlets, etc.),  4) Newspapers only (not related material such as phonebooks.)
  • All faculty and lunch rooms equiped with recycle bins for: 1) Aluminum Cans, 2) Plastic Bottles
  • Other: 1) Cardboard, 2) Printer Cartridges, 3) Batteries

Challenging Obstacles

We recently got input from an e-mail suggesting that there may be a few problems to overcome in order to get schools and the state of Utah to agree with our proposal.

  • Where to store the items being recycled?
  • Who will pick up and account for these items?
  • Managing pest control with recycled pop cans or food items?
  • The location of bins for paper and plastic far enough away from the building to comply with fire codes?
  • Accounting for revenue?
  • Cost of management, custodial, etc.
  • Is it cost effective?
  • Will it require additional funds to operate?
