From Reading Games to Playing Books is the research website for my doctoral thesis on the narrative aspect of computer games and how it points to the originary presence of ludicity and machnicity in the text. This is a theory-based project that aims to engage with and move beyond the debate between ludologists and narratologists that has for a long time characterised Game Studies. Though both groups have produced valuable research, their respective extreme positions tend to limit the nature of game-studies and make it unidirectional. A more compelling approach is therefore required to resolve the game-story impasse as well as to account for the new and changing modes of narrative in computer games that further complicate questions much beyond the limits of the ludology-narratology debate.
