The Roanoke Police Department established Explorer Post 616 on March 12, 1992. The Explorer Scout Program enables youth to participate in many types of educational and recreational activities, allowing them to gain more perspective on the operations of the Police Department. Explorer Scouts do not need to have a desire to pursue a career in law enforcement. The group meets weekly, and guest speakers discuss topics including:

  • Tactical Training
  • Basic Firearms Familiarization
  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • Radio Communications
  • Report Writing
  • Crime Prevention
  • Traffic Direction and Investigation

Explorer Scouts also participate in community service projects. The requirements to be an Explorer Scout include the following:
  • The applicant must be between 14 and 21 years of age.
  • The applicant must be in the 9th grade.
  • Each applicant must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
  • The applicant must not have any arrest or conviction records for serious offenses.
  • The applicant must be of good moral character.

Once an application is received, a background investigation will be conducted with local law enforcement and the school the applicant is attending. If the applicant is under 18 years of age, parental/guardian approval is required. Anyone requesting more information or an application should contact Sergeant J.V. Buzzo, III at (540) 853-2212  or e-mail the post at rcpe616@yahoo.com or be redirected to the online Application by clicking http://www.freewebs.com/rcpe616/onlineapplication.htm
