I'll never forget my first campfire and how my entire body was quivering as my bones turned to Jello. The blinding fumes of fire, steaming and stinging, drifted lazily in the wind. Coughing, shuffling of feet, wiggling, and even distinct snoring could be heard. The lively fire danced and blazed in the howling wind's gentle caress. Shadows reached out to us, but the fire's shielding circle of light protected us. Suddenly, a distant roar reverberated throughout the forest, scattering flocks of birds in a flurry of feathers. Fluorescent yellow eyes, glowing in anticipation, dared us to lay our heads down to sleep. Dark and gloomy, spindly branches loomed over us. Swaying back and forth, the dark trees rustled in response to the chilly breeze. They blocked the faint moonlight, so the faithful stars were the only source of illumination, keeping watch until long after the last embers of our fire had died down. By the time the sun began to shed new light on the world, my teeth were still chattering, and I was shivering uncontrollably. And it wasn't just because of the cold.
