Ravens Creek Ti-Pi Village

Hollow Water, Manitoba Canada

Garry Raven and Björk Bjarnadóttir an Icelander, an environmental-ethnologist and a storyteller have been working together since the year 2005 promoting their people's culture in schools and museums in Canada. The cultural heritage of these two different people, the Icelanders and the Ojibway, work harmoniously and awaken an interest among students to learn more about different cultural meanings. It is often a surprising for students to see how well two such seemingly different cultural heritages work together.

Björk teaches Icelandic heritage, folklore, folktales, myths, legends and history in a storyteller form. Folktales are of many different kind and can be funny, sad, scary, educating and last but not least; they can open up " hidden worlds" which many are not aware of. Björks teachings are often based on an ancient knowledge linked to the environment. She uses for example the Northern myths that explain how everything came to existence in our world today.

Garry Raven teaches first nation culture, history and heritage. He teaches for example the medicine wheel, the clan system, spirit names, hand drum making and herbal medicines.

This is not the first time that an Icelander and a First Nation person work together. It propably happened for the first time in 1875 when many Icelandic immigrants moved to Canada. The first nation people in Canada helped the Icelanders to learn how to live in Canada and how to use its natural resources, for example how to fish through ice on Lake Winnipeg.

Garry Raven and Björk Bjarnadóttir are alwayes willing and ready to teach at any school and any community that is intrested in theire teachings and lectures.
