I met a girl once in Winnipeg
an apartment dweller off Toronto Street
a real poster model for victimization
she was raped at the age of 6 by a brother
then at age 13 by a neighbor.
Her mom all 4 foot 11 inches of her
was hell and bad teeth
who dug into her brain daily
booted her blue except when it rained outside.
The rain made her too sad to beat anybody but herself.
She never aged either. She said she met her
father at her mom’s funeral when she was 18.
He had just gotten out of jail.
She got tired of looking at dead flowers
so she went to a park bench and started
reading a book instead.
VC Andrews she told me. She could
identify with the people in it.
She hates men now evidently,
but somehow puts up with me.
Over the years she says she’s tried
the suicide route a few times but
was never really good at it.
She tried booze and pills but they
couldn’t quite make it for her.
Although she is 30 she doesn’t believe
in birthdays anymore.
Her counsellor says she’s surprised
she hasn’t killed anybody yet
or lost all her marbles.
She told me sometimes its easier
to dream with your ears open
than your legs apart.
