Poetry of Rufus A. Ratchford (1849-1932)

Only Thine This Heart

Thine only thine this heart--

And how it beats for thee,

And when it beats, it doth enshrine

Each smile and word and look of thine

In its deep chance by.

Thine only thine this heart--

  In constant some may be

But, ah! no change its pulse can prove

Thought sumers glow or winter's shade

It throbs and breaks for thee.

Thine only thine this heart--

As river weeds the sea

So my life gloweth in to thine

Like water mingling with rich wine

Till naught I am but thine.

Thine only thine this heart--

Through all now and to be

While others live to know some change

And o'er new form or matter range

Still beats my heart for thee.
