StrobeTronic Noise-Lab

The StrobeTronic is a light controlled noise maker.

Short Mp3 of the StrobeTronic in action.

This unit makes a huge range of strange noises. You start by setting the controls on the top of the unit, this sets up a sweep on the LEDS, by moving the LEDs around the light sensors a basic noise loop is set up.

Combinations of frequency, volume and the two LEDs make for interesting sounds.

The unit consists of three modules, 2 transmit and 1 receive. The transmit modules have 3 controls each, Sweep speed, sweep range and mode(sine wave, saw tooth and pulse). Each Tx module has a LED output attached to a flexible lead. The Receive module has two light sensors, one controls the frequency and the other volume.

The case of the unit is constructed from plastic tubes and wooden tops sealed using beeswax.

Each module has at it heart 1 Picaxe 08m Micro. The tx modules have 2 pots and 1 push button switch for inputs and 1 LED output. The Rx module has 1 light sensor into an ADC on its input, the light sensor for volume is a voltage divider on sound output of the Picaxe. The output of the voltage divider goes to the 3.5mm plug.
