Meridien Rapier
What
is it?![]()
Rapier combat is a marshal activity enjoyed by many in the Society for Creative Anachronism, both as an exciting active pursuit and as a very entertaining spectator sport. Although it is fairly new to us here in the Kingdom of Meridies, it is steadily growing with an enthusiastic energy.
Meridien
Rapier is not fought with rattan sticks and heavy plate armor. Instead we
use steel schlagers with rubber tips and protective clothing (primarily). This
lighter equipment allows for greater mobility about the field and more theatrical antics
when appropriate.
A schlager is a steel blade with no edge or point that was made for simulated fencing such as you might see in a production of Hamlet. These Theatrical Rapiers have the right feel, motion, and weight distribution to enable the active study of historic rapier techniques.
Of
course, SAFETY is our primary issue. Although we do use real steel blades and
less armor, we do not injure each other. That is because we do not hit with
power. We put more emphasis on agility and finesse, than on brute force and
speed. (Meridien Rapier is an excellent opportunity for women.) This is
accomplished through good training.

GETTING
STARTED![]()
In order to get involved with Meridien Rapier, please familiarize yourself with the Kingdom of Meridies: Rapier Combat: Rules & Regulations. Then check to see where and when the nearest practices are being conducted. After some basic training with one of our warranted marshals, you should be ready to authorize. Then the sky is the limit. You are well on your way to a lifetime of Rapier fun!
Equipment: For your first lesson, the only equipment you will need is enthusiasm. As your training continues, you will be expected to begin assembling your armor (protective clothing). However, most of our instructors will have some extra equipment for you to borrow, while you are working on it. NOTE: In order to authorize, we DO require you to own your own armor, but you DO NOT have to have your own mask/helm or weapons. This way, you can try your hand at Meridien Rapier and see if you like it, before you invest in the more expensive pieces of equipment.
