Prologue: Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats
|
It's very, very hard to spot this (the only way to really do it is to go frame by frame): On the little “click” where all the cats suddenly turn to face the camera, Mistoffelees turns his head a split-second before everyone else. screenshot
The third time the chorus says, “What's a Jellicle cat?” Mistoffelees has magically teleported from his original position on downstage left (the actors' left, towards the front of the stage) to be next to Grizabella on upstage left (toward the back). screenshot
For the first half of "Naming," Rumpleteazer's lip-sync is a bit off.
Tumblebrutus has two different kinds of eyebrows. (especially noticable in “Naming”) screenshot
Cassandra's eyes change color. In “Naming,” you can tell in her close-ups that her eyes are a grey-ish brown, but in her solo line in Jellicle Ball, “Jellicle Cats have moonlit eyes,” her eyes are obviously bright blue. screenshot
Tantomile's wig does not completely cover her human ears. This is especially noticable on the line, “Or else, Jellylorum...” screenshot
Invitation to the Jellicle Ball
Again, as Victoria is taking center stage for her little dance, Mistoffelees magically teleports from downstage right in one shot to be right next to the pipe when she begins her dance in the next shot.
This is just a complaint from me, but I really think Jacob Brent should sing more. He has a very soothing voice (or maybe it's just me...).
When Mistoffelees sings "The Jellicle Moon is shining bright!" watch Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer hug each other. It's so cute! screenshot (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
As the camera zooms in on Munkustrap at the end of “Invitation to the Jellicle Ball,” watch Rumpleteazer's eyes. She's looking right at the camera as it moves in. screenshot
Alonzo seems to take a little longer than everyone else to realize what's happening just before Munkustrap introduces Jenny. Look for him when Munkustrap says "Who will it be?". All the cats sort of weasle about and such, only Alonzo, right side of the stage and quite far in the back, is still standing up, staring in the air. Then his head spins around to see the crowd moving on and he finally catches up. (submitted by Shurachan)
At the very beginning, before Munkustrap starts singing and there's a wideshot of the whole stage, Mungojerrie is on stage left beside Etcetera. Then all of a sudden he's on stage right for his closeup with Teazer. Then he seems to disappear completely. There's no sign of him for the line "or on the mat.” screenshot 1, ss2, ss3 (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
Watch Rumpleteazer in the begining. She pretends she has leopard spots, and then she falls down flat pretending to be the mat. (from Oriana)
Before Misto opens the trunk, Munkustrap misses his cue! Watch his mouth, it says the word 'and' but we don't hear it. Then his head snaps forward and he says the rest of the phrase. (from Oriana)
Speaking of cameras, just before Misto lifts the trunk, watch the extreme left of the screen: there's a cameraman with a red shirt visible getting a close on Munkustrap. It might only be visible in widescreen. screenshot
Just after Munkustrap says “and sits” for the last time in the first verse, watch him and Mistoffeles nod to each other, a confirmation that Misto should use magic to open the boot of the car. screenshot
Just after the truck of the car opens to reveal Jenny, watch Skimble waving to her (or scratching at her?) from up left stage (submitted by Krissy)
When Jenny rolls out of the trunk of the car, you can see the legs of her costume that she wears in the tap dance. screenshot
Try to catch Rumpleteazer at far stage left on the line “She tucks up her skirts...” She's imitating Jenny's walk in the funny coat. screenshot
Also as Jennyanydots comes downstage (on the line, “In bed and asleep..”) watch Victoria swat at Jenny's tail. screenshot
When Jennyanydots slides through Munkustrap's legs, half her skirt comes through as well, but in the next shot only her top half is through. ss1, ss2 (submitted by Puddycat)
Through most of Jenny's introduction, Exotica calmly sits with Asparagus in the pipe upleft. She starts disappearing between shots around the time that Pouncival enters. screenshot 1, ss2
In the second verse of 'Jennyanydots' (when she's actually moving around the stage), the top buttons of her big coat come undone, so there's a bit flapping about. It changes between shots. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
On the first part of “And she's even created a beetles tatoo,” Pouncival is just standing on the side of the stage, non-chalantly, and kind of suspiciously. screenshot
As Jennyanydots slides through Munkustrap's legs, watch him shake a little bit: the dress is so large she almost makes him lose his balance! This one's a little hard to see, though.
Watch Jemima as she puts on her mouse/icing-piping thingy: she has some trouble with it, and even has to take it off and put it back on again.
When Demeter, Bombalurina and Jellylorum are sidestepping with their hands over their head, Jellylorum has her legs apart while she steps, and Demeter has her legs together. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
When Jenny is getting her big coat undone and the three queens are singing 'and she's even created a beetle's tatoo', Jellylorum doesn't sing 'tatoo'; she just smiles. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
Jellylorum has some difficulty removing Jennyanydot's boot thingy.
I shouldn't have to say this, but there is way too much cut out of the cockroach tap dance to make it run smoothly.
In cockroach costume, every cat's shoes keep switching from their normal character color to black tap shoes betweens shots. (Note especially Rumpleteazer, Admetus, Victoria.) (submitted by Rumpleteazer) screenshot 1, ss2
In the first half of the tap-dance, Pounce is sitting in the oven, waiting for his cue. screenshot (from Oriana)
Throughout the cockroach tap dance, Skimble and the younger Asparagus seem to be chatting to each other on the tire. (I personally think Skimble is showing off that he has such a talented mate.) screenshot1 screenshot2
When the cockroaches bow (when they're all in a line), watch Mungojerrie at stage left. He bows the wrong way the first time, and must remain in that position for the second bow.
Jellylorum slips on her first turn toward the end of the tap dance.
On the very last note of "Jenny," Asparagus is sitting on the tire and Pounce is in the cockroach group. But then as the music and the shot changes, Asparagus is in the line greeting Jenny and Pounce is on the tire, magically de-cockroached. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
For a cat that likes to sit around, Jennyanydots sure can move quickly. As she greets the line of older cats at the very end of her song, she starts at the end of the line that nearest the middle of the stage and heads towards the side, where Munkustrap is. When Tugger's music starts she and Munk are in the middle of the stage at the other end of the line. (submitted by Puddycat)
Just before Tugger says his first meow, watch the space between Munkus and Jenny: you can see spit fly out of Munkustrap's mouth. screenshot
At the same time as the spit thing-to-see, watch Pouncival (kind of in the background). He is adjusting his shoe for no apparent reason.
The second time Tugger says meow, watch Pouncival on the tire. He does a pretty cool backflip. screenshot
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are still onstage in their cockroach costumes for the first couple lines of “The Rum Tum Tugger.” They both then run off and remove their costumes. Rumpleteazer comes back later in the song, but Mungojerrie doesn't; he must not have been impressed! screenshot
Pouncival, on the tyre, copies Tugger's movements on the line 'If you put me in a house I would much prefer a flat'. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
Everyone appears and disappears from atop the boot (trunk) of the car in the Rum Tum Tugger's song. Just go through once watching only the top of the car: you'll see what I mean.
Misto climbs down from the trunk of the car to put his foot down on the bumper twice. screenshot1, screenshot2 (submitted by Puddycat)
Right after the first chorus, watch Plato and Etcy dance together cutely. (Now there's a non-canon pairing if I ever saw one). screenshot
Around the time Bombalurina sings in Tugger's song, note that Jennyanydots and Jellylorum are also appearing and disappearing from shot to shot (when you can see them, they are sitting on the boot with their cross-stitch).
Right after Bombalurina says the 'curious beast' line, Rumpelteazer hops on the car with Skimbleshanks. She is making faces and stuff and it's cute to watch. screenshot (submitted by Demo)
When Tugger and Bomby are rubbing butts, watch where he puts his hands! screenshot (from Oriana)
On the line, “For I only like what I find for myself,” watch Plato in the background. There's a hair or something hanging off his left armwarmer. screenshot (Could the reason be that they are falling apart? additional screenshot [thought from Puddycat])
In 'The Rum Tum Tugger', all of the female kittens (most noticeably Etcetera) get very excited when Tugger bumps Bombalurina away on the line 'artful and knowing'. screenshot (submitted by LaWs_1812)
Just after the line 'there's nothing I enjoy like a horrible muddle' in the shot of the entire stage you can see Misto put his arms up like he's scratching the wall next to him, but when the camera focuses on Victoria and Etcetera his arm are down and he's just sitting normally. (submitted by Puddycat)
The tape on Plato's fingers can also be seen in 'Rum Tum Tugger' and 'Bustopher Jones'. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
Watch Demeter retreat into the oven in the shot after she swats at Tugger. screenshot
As Victoria rejoins the line doing the elbow-thingy, she is not singing!
Near the end of the Rum Tum Tugger, when the cats are grouped around him, just before he shoos them away Etcetera is reaching for his belt. screenshot (submitted by Chelsey T.)
Also as the cats group around Tugger, Tumblebrutus takes the opportunity to nuzzle up to Cassandra, and Pouncival does the same with Jemima. screenshot (submitted by Jemima) (submitted by Puddycat)
As Tugger takes center stage for his grand finale, watch Pouncival (stage left). Something seems to be wrong with Bombalurina's leg. screenshot
Everyone knows about what Pouncie does to Bombalurina, but have you noticed that Plato seems to be doing something similar to Cassandra at the same time just offscreen?
Not to mention that you should watch Admetus (stage right). He tries to imitate Tugger's hip-wiggling ability, without success. screenshot
When the four kittens are around Tugger and he wiggles his hips, Tumblebrutus is trying to imitate him in the background. After that he keeps pulling funny faces until Etectera collapses. (submitted by Puddycat)
When Etcetera is screaming for Tugger, watch Jemima. She gives her a look as if to say, "Are you all right?" screenshot (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
After Etcetera does the whole fanatic screaming kitten thing, in the next shot Electra is covering her ears. Also, in the next frame, her paws are on the ground, between her knees. She's a speedy mover! (second part submitted by Apex) screenshot
Also after said scream, Etcetera falls over in a dead faint. screenshot
When Tugger wiggles his butt to the audience, look at where Electra is!!! No, really, you have to look at this!! (I really can't believe John Partridge let her do that...) screenshot
When Tugger is shimmying on stage right, watch Coricopat (to the left of center in the crowd below). When he turns around, he has this hilarious and very un-Coricopat-like expression on his face. screenshot, though it's better if you catch it in the video (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
At the very end of the song, when Tugger is ruffling his mane, Jennyanydots makes a move like she's trying to cover her eyes. screenshot
When Grizabella enters and Tugger fluffs up his name, he appears to swear at her. (submitted by Laws_1812)
Watch Pouncival before he goes out to scratch Grizzabella. Tumblebrutus and Plato seemed to have convinced him to do it. screenshot
When Tumblebrutus goes up to Griz, Exotica's on the steps in her pale costume, but when he runs she's standing next to the pipe in her dark costume. screenshot 1, screenshot 2 (submitted by Puddycat)
Alonzo's action #1: look at Alonzo and Cassandra after Cassandra gets annoyed with Grizabella. He seems to be restraining her, but he also looks like he's enjoying it. screenshot
No wonder Alonzo looked like he was enjoying holding Cassandra back. Watch where her hand goes on the line 'you'd really have thought she'd ought to be dead'. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town
During BJ's song, Demeter is no where to be found. After Gizabella left the stage, she followed after her. Then, she randomly comes back just in time for her famous Macavity line. (submitted by Quidam)
As the music starts for Bustopher, watch Admetus (way upstage). He suddenly darts next to Asparagus and positions himself in Asparagus's embrace. screenshot
Bustopher has fish skeletons on his cravat. screenshot (from Oriana)
Have you noticed that Pouncival seems a little too tall right around here. There's a good reason: he's sitting on Plato's shoulders! Skimbleshanks seems to be trying to hide this from Bustopher, too. See how they're on top of each other here?
When all the toms are bowing, what on Earth is Admetus doing? Don't know but it sure is cute. screenshot (submitted by Quidam)
Jenny looks very sweaty around her neckline while singing with Bombalurina and Jellylorum. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
As Mistoffelees slides towards Bustopher's tail, watch Etcetera. She's saluting Bustopher, kitten-style and very cutely. screenshot
Watch Munkustrap's face as Mistoffelees is about to yank Bustopher's tail. He notices Misto before Bustopher does, and even moves to distract the fat cat before Misto can get a hold of his tail. screenshot
In Bustopher Jones, when the Toms are singing "And we're all of us proud..." (the first time) watch Plato. He sort of rolls on his side. screenshot (submitted by Chelsey T.)
Mistoffelees walks differently when he's on all fours in Bustopher's song: he seems to keep his feet up off the ground more. screenshot
Again, Admetus is making funny faces all the time. (maybe it's his makeup or something)
Right after the line "...but blimps," Coricopat's left ear isn't covered by his wig, and if you watch closely you can see that it stays uncovered for most of the rest of the song. screenshot (submitted by Kizatort)
When he sings 'drink at the drones', Pouncival and Tumblebrutus roll sideways into the shot. Tumble then waves at Bustopher, very cutely! screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
At the end of “...For a drink at the Drones,” watch Pouncival in the foreground. He's wiggling his butt, and it looks so funny!
At the same time as the above two entries, Misto makes a funny face, like he's jealous, or perhaps, “How could you be so brazen with Bustopher Jones!?” (submitted by KarriMacabre)
When Bustopher is doing his walk, Admetus takes the hat and stashes it before he gets in line with the toms. (submitted by Quidam)
Shouldn't this hurt!? (submitted by Aoide) screenshot!
When they repeat "Bustopher Jones in white" for emphasis and all motion to him (when he's on the hat), Jemima seems to forget to motion, and does it late. screenshot
Watch Mistoffelees (stage right) when Bustopher is doing his little walk with his back to the audience: Misto is trying to do the little walk too! (though you can barely see it; all you can really catch is his left arm and left foot) screenshot
Coricopat randomly being balletic? screenshot
Watch Mistoffelees again when Bustopher says “But I'm so well preserved...” He motions to his lineup of toms, as if to say, “Remember, hands!” screenshot
Look at Coricopat after Bustopher passes him; he seems to sink with relief that Bustopher found nothing wrong with him. screenshot
Just before Munkustrap takes his final leap offstage, watch the floor under him: it seems to be blurred out for some reason. screenshot
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer have donned extra costume pieces for their song. They both now sport leg pieces and arm pieces (instead of leg warmers and arm warmers). Mungo has a new shirt, Teazer has a new sleeveless leotard (if there's a word for it, I don't know it). Teazer also has on her pearl necklace (which is pinned to her costume, by the way; watch her when she does a cartwheel, the necklace doesn't fall like it should). The new costumes disappear around “The Jellicle Ball.” screenshot
Two whole verses were cut out of this song as well. Part of one of them can be seen on the special features dvd in the Making of Cats section.
Some people say that the entire song of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer was dubbed, because in the credits it gives credit to Paul Baker and Vicky Coote for additional voice recordings for MJ and RT. But this is not true. They only recordings they made were Rumpleteazer's infamous giggle, Mungojerrie's shush, and Rumpleteazer's sneeze (in “Skimbleshanks”). Jo Gibb and Drew Varley most definitely sung their own song! screenshot
Listen closely when Rumpleteazer first enters. When she motions for Mungojerrie to follow, you can hear her say, "Come on!" (You may need to turn up the volume on your dvd-viewing device [tv, computer, whatever])
The first time Mungojerrie sings his name, watch to his right. There's a piece of orange fur floating in the air. screenshot (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
Mungojerrie kicks one of the bags behind him on the line, “Knockabout clowns...”
Watch Mungojerrie's mouth as he sings, “I'm afraid you must wait and have dinner tomorrow”: his mouth is a little off with the music toward the end of the line. Also as they are spinning on the floor with their feet in the air, Munogjerrie's foot kicks Rumpleteazer's ankle (it's kind of insignificant, though).
Evidence that Jerrie and Teazer are mates: when Teazer says her name ater the line 'no sober person could take his oath' watch Jerrie's face. That is not a brotherly expression, it looks like he's going 'phwoar, get a load of her!' screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
When MJ and RT go to run off at the end of their song, they end up just staying on top of the boot, as if they have given up. (submitted by Taij)
When Munkustrap and Alonzo throw the loot bags back behind the stage, Teazer is facing away from Jerrie, but when Misto sinks down she's facing him. (submitted by Puddycat)
Just after Misto turns around to come downstage for “Old Deuteronomy,” watch the stage right entrance. Victoria randomly comes onstage all by herself, seemingly for no reason other than she's not onstage already. screenshot
Plato just can't get enough! Just after Coricopat and Tantomile sing “I believe it is Old Deuteronomy,” watch Plato and Jemima in the background. They're all over each other! This goes on for a good fifteen seconds or so until Jennyanydots turns around, sees them, and breaks it up. screenshot
I just love the way Munkustrap says to Mistoffelees in one look, “Go get him, but be careful!” in Old D's song. screenshot
Cassandra sinks down to the ground more than once in 'Old Deuteronomy' (once in a close-up, then again in the wide-shot after it). (submitted by Laws_1812)
When Munkustrap starts singing, watch Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer on the car trunk. Mungojerrie is breathing really hard. (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
After the closeup where Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer can be seen breathing hard, keep watching them. In the next shot, they are in completely different positions. (submitted by Kizatort)
When Munkustrap cuddles with Victoria in 'Old Deuteronomy', the shadow of a camera can be seen on Etcetera's wig. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
When Munkustrap sings 'sits in the sun' and everyone holds their positions, Jemima puts the leg with the stripes up in the air, but in the next shot it's the plain leg. screenshot 1, screenshot 2 (submitted by Puddycat)
Admetus stands up to go greet Old Deuteronomy, but he is hindered by Plato stepping on his tail! screenshot
Pouncival crashes into Munkustrap's back when they all go to greet Old Deuteronomy. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
As Tugger bows to the great old guy, you can see said old guy's white shirt under his costume. screenshot
The Aweful Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles, Together With Some Account of the Participation of the Pugs and the Poms, and the Intervention of the Great Rumpus Cat
As Munkustrap does his narration part just before "Pekes and the Pollicles," on the line, "On the night we make the Jellicle choice," watch Electra and Pouncival in the foreground. Electra seems to be resting on Pounce's rear end, and he turns around and smiles at her. It's so cute! screenshot
Etcy's doing something really weird on "on the night we make the Jellicle choice.” If you can figure out what it is, let me know?
As Munkustrap sings the introduction for “The Awefull Battle” (“And now that the Jellicle leader is here...”), watch Rumpleteazer raise one finger excitedly, as if to say, “He's number one!” screenshot
Watch Jemima and Mungojerrie when all the cats are getting into position just before Munkustrap starts "Pekes and Pollicles". Did Jemima's head suddenly get itchy and Mungojerrie was conveniently there, or could it be something more? screenshot (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
Watch Victoria sitting with Old D in the beginning of “Pekes and the Pollicles.” It's not Phyllida Crowley Smith, but looks more like Jo Bingham (Etcetera). It changes back and forth between actresses between shots. screenshot
Random fluff floats by on "They did not advance." screenshot
This one occurs when Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are centerstage with Munkustrap. When MJ and RT spin around, watch Munkustrap: he adjusts his armwarmer.
Watch Jemima and Victoria in the background while MJ and RT are barking at each other. Jemima shakes her head wierdly, and Victoria seems to be motioning to the Pekes and Pollicles in turn..
Rumpleteazer doesn't want to go back onstage, but Jenny makes her. You can see them arguing about it. (Perhaps she's hurt over Munkus bumping her?) screenshot (from Oriana)
When Munkustrap says 'no British dog' Bombalurina is straddling the pipe. When he says 'and so all the pekes' shes gone, but shes back again when he says 'surely a dozen, more likely a score'. (submitted by Puddycat)
Pouncival really seems to be the star of “The Aweful Battle.” While Munkustrap is up front singing about the Pekes, he's in the back, goofing off, presenting himself to Old D, and being all around silly! (submitted by Fluffs)
After Munkustrap says 'dour Yorkshire tyke', it cuts to wideshot. In the bottom right-hand corner, you can Rumpleteazer with Skimbleshanks. Rumpleteazer doesn't have her 'Peke-head-thingy' on, and Skimbleshanks is still in normal cat-guise. screenshot (submitted by LaWs_1812)
While the Pollicles are marching around the stage, watch Alonzo at the end of the line. He smacks Plato, who had been marching the in the wrong direction, on the head. (submitted by Rumpleteazer) screenshot
I didn't notice this until it was pointed out to me: throughout the whole song, Pouncival is wearing his shoebox hat backwards! Note that the ears on his are in the front while all the other toms have theirs in the back. Also, you can tell that it's slipping backwards to stay on his head. (Maybe he did it on purpose? To look like a tuff gangstah Pollicle?) screenshot
On the line 'the Russian, the Dutch, the Dalmation' you can see Bumbalurina and Jennyanydots getting ready, but on the line 'the poodle. the pom, the Alsation' they're both gone. 'To those that are frisky and frollicle' Jenny's back, 'that my name it is little tom pollicle' Bomba's back as well. (submitted by Puddycat)
The gloves come off! On "Let my meaning be perfectly plain," Pouncival forcibly throws off his box gloves so he can hit Munkustrap, then must retrieve them later (note that on Tugger's bagpiping, he's wearing one and holding one under his arm). screenshot
When Pouncival falls, while the camera's still on him Munkustrap steps across with his left foot, but in the next shot it's his right (you've gotta look reeeeally fast to catch it, though) (submitted by Puddycat)
Mistoffelees and Skimbleshanks step up towards Munkustrap twice; the first time shakily, and the second time with more confidence.
After the line "When the blue bonnets came over the border", Pouncival is giving someone off-camera the thumbs-up. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
Just after Tugger begins bagpiping, pay attention to the far back of the stage (upstage in theatre terminology). This is very hard to catch because it goes by so quickly, but Plato and Victoria seem to be interacting rather interestingly. It's hard to tell exactly what they're doing because they're mostly obscured by other cats, but you can definitely tell that Victoria takes a good swat at Plato!
Pouncival's right ear (tie) is hitched up when he imitates the Tugger's bagpiping. screenshot
Speaking of Misto's shoes, watch him as Tugger finishes bagpiping. As he spins around to sit on the floor, he loses a shoe, and propels it toward center stage. Electra even steps on it as she dances forward. In a few subsequent shots, he only wears one shoe, but after that he has it back on again. screenshot
It's Pouncival again! On the “Huffamy Snuffamy” lines, and the barking afterward, Pouncival can be seen walking behind the line of Pollicles, as if rallying his troups. screenshot
Jennyanydots is "rallying the troops" around the same time Pouncival is. screenshot (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
After the "Huffery Snuff" line, if you watch the Pollicles, you'll notice that while everyone else is jumping around, for the first few seconds, Mungojerrie is just standing there. (submitted by Kizatort)
On the line, "and the underground trembled," Mungojerrie makes a motion of "come and get it" to the Pekes.
Pouncival makes a cute pantomime of shooting everyone on the line "From a small basement flat.” This is another one of those “Omigawd, did he really just do that? It's so cute!” things. screenshot
Before Rumpus cat comes on, when they hold the 'caaaat' note, Munkustrap seems to be watching something for his cue to turn around. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
Coricopat really gets into his part of playing a dog. He marches really funnily and his tongue hangs out. And he bounces and barks when everyone is barking at each other. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
The Great Rumpus Cat and Macavity and Exotica are the only cats without discernable ears. screenshot (only Rumpus Cat)
Just after Munkustrap sings 'bars of the area' Alonzo's bottom lip wobbles as if he's pretending to be so scared he's about to cry. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
The wire that the Great Rumpus cat uses to make his hair stand up is completely visible on his right side the entire time you see him. screenshot
Not to mention that Rumpus is trying really hard not to smile when Munkustrap says, “or hairier!” screenshot
Just after “Or hairier,” Etcetera seems to be bowing to the Great Rumpus Cat. It's quite cute. screenshot
When Munkustrap sings 'the pekes and the pollicles quickly took warning' Jerrie looks like he's thinking 'we're supposed to run from THAT???' screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
At the end, when everyone comes onstage to bow, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are absent. Odd, since they were the lead Peke and Pollicle. (submitted by Rumpleteazer) screenshot
At the very end of Pekes and Pollicles, Just before the Mac scare, both Electra and Jenny are acting kind of weirdly.
Watch Etcetera as Rumpus is leaving the stage. She looks at him really funny.
In the shot after Etcetera looks at the Rumpus cat 'really funny', she disappears from her place beside Electra. Where did she go? (submitted by Laws_1812)
Plato seems to be chewing on Victoria's tail just after 'The Pekes and the Pollicles', when everyone gathers around Old Deuteronomy. He has it in his mouth and shakes it around a little bit! screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
Just after Mistoffelees has left the stage and Victoria is entering, look behind Victoria offstage. Mistoffelees can be seen (his white fur and face are easily recognizable). screenshot
After Victoria strecthes out her paw to Old Deuteronomy at the beginning of the ball, the next shot shows her dancing in the foreground, MUCH further away from Old Deuteronomy than she was. [Some of the dancing in this bit of the Ball has been cut out – a moment of it can be seen in Michael Gruber's interview on the dvd special features.] (submitted by Laws_1812)
The little move that Victoria and Jemima do (putting their hands together and falling to the ground), is vaguely similar to the move that Magenta and Riff do in “Rocky Horror Picture Show” screenshot(submitted by Jessedandle).
You can't hear Munkustrap singing with Victoria and Jemima and Old Deuteronomy at the beginning The Jellicle Ball. You'd think a strong narrator like him would sing out, come on!
When Alonzo says “Jellicle cats are merry” he steps up toward Old Deuteronomy twice.
I didn't realize this for a while, but Tumblebrutus is making fun of all the older toms in his lines of “Jellicle Ball.”
On Skimble's line, “Jellicle cats have cheerful faces,” he sings with no Scottish accent whatsoever. (I believe this is due to dubbing.)
On Misto's line, “We like to practice our airs and graces,” watch Admetus emerge from the oven a total of three times, in three different shots. (submitted by Omi)
Different camera angles for “we know how to dance a gavot and a jig” can be seen in one of the sections of the special features dvd.
On the line “Jellicles wash behind their ears,” you can see Electra's human ear. screenshot (submitted by Omi)
Alonzo's action #2: Keep and eye on Alonzo and Jemima during Jellylorum's line: “Jellicles dry between their toes.” screenshot
On Cori and Tant's "Jellicle cats are white and black" try to catch Misto and Vick sitting back on the tire. He's stroking her. (try to see it in the video) screenshot
Watch Coricopat's face when MJ and RT come up to say “Jellicle cats are of moderate size.” He looks so PO'd. screenshot
Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are either cooking up a plot or they are mates and I've been in the wrong camp all along. screenshot (submitted by Puredeadthingy)
On the line 'To dance by the light of the Jellicle Moon', everyone spins - except Cassandra. She just stands there looking very out of place. screenshot (submitted by Laws_1812)
As Alonzo sings, “Jellicle cats are black...” watch Exotica exit the stage, even though she was never really on it to begin with. screenshot
Alonzo's action #3: At the end of the line “Jellicle cats as we said are small,” Alonzo can be seen sneaking up on Rumpleteazer from behind. (You might have to go frame by frame to get the full effect of this one.) screenshot
I love the look on Mistoffelees' face at the end of “We will practice a caper or two in the hall.” I can just see him saying, “Oops...” screenshot
Some of the older cats can be seen sneaking away when all the others get in formation and rotate their heads. (that sounded vague, I know...) screenshot
Tugger appears for an instant as Mistoffelees begins his and Alonzo's bit in the Ball, but he disappears in the next shot and is never seen there again! screenshot
When Alonzo, Mistoffelees and Pouncival are dancing, Tumblebrutus does his entrance-flips without armwarmers, but magically has them in the next shot. screenshot 1, screenshot 2 (submitted by Puddycat)
At the end of Misto, Pounce, and Tumble's first dance, when Bomba gets the stage, watch as they pirouette downstage (towards the front of the stage; sorry, theatre terminology again). Pouncival disappears and reappears between shots. In one, his spinning downstage with Misto and Tumble, but when Bomba comes in, he's gone! When the other two toms turn around to snear at Bomba, he's there again, but when all's said and done and Tumble and Misto have sauntered offstage, Pounce is sitting pretty on the tire! (submitted by Fluffs)
When Mistoffelees, Pouncival, and Tumblebrutus do the spin jumps downstage, watch Pouncival. He's a bit off-timing (at least, he is when you can see him in the shot). (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
Watch Mungojerrie in the background when Tumblebrutus and Mistoffelees are dancing. He escorts Victoria down the stairs in a very gentlemanly fashion. screenshot (submitted by Rumpleteazer)
When Bomba is doing her sexy dance, Tugger comes over and puts a friendly arm around Admetus. screenshot (submitted by Quidam)
Also just after Bombalurina steals the stage from Misto, watch Etcetera as she dances toward stage-left: I swear she kicks herself in the head (this one has to be seen on the video to be believed). screenshot
Alonzo's action #4: in the part of the dance after Bomabalurina stole center stage and is dancing with Tugger, note who Alonzo is dancing with: now it's Etcetera! (turncoat...) screenshot
A bit of irony: at the same part as the above thing to catch, look at who Demeter is dancing with. It's Plato. I thought it was rather ironic, considering that Bryn Walters plays Macavity as well as Plato... screenshot
Again, also after Bombalurina steals the stage from Misto, watch Rumpleteazer and Electra on the tire. They seem to be having a jolly good time, dancing to the music and upstaging the other dancers. Rumpleteazer even claps for Plato and Demeter as they come back toward them after the lift. screenshot
Tugger has a different collar on when he dances with Bombalurina. screenshot [Actually, he's just wearing his same collar backwards (so he doesn't stab her, presumably. You can see the spikes in the back in one (and exactly one!) screenshot. Corrected by Puddycat]
Just after Tugger lifts her up in the air and takes her back upstage, Bombalurina seems to lose her balance and has to frantically grab Tugger's arm so she doesn't fall.
And not only that, but she grabs his butt, too! (submitted by FelNinIty)
After the part where Tugger n' the gang are dancing with Bombalurina n' the gang, when Misto and Tumble come out, Tumble isn't wearing his collar. It appears and disappears throughout their dance. (submitted by Omi)
Alonzo's action #5: okay, we're to the part of the Jellicle Ball where almost everyone pairs off guy-girl (the Victoria/Plato or mating dance or [and here's my favorite name for it], “massive nap scene”). Now Alonzo has gone back to Cassandra! screenshot
While Plato and Victoria seem to be “sizing each other up,” watch Rumpleteazer (back by the tire). Before going to to cuddle with Mungojerrie, she takes a moment back with the Rum Tum Tugger. She goes right up to him, and he either tickles her chin or gives her a kiss; it's really hard to tell, because the camera cuts to Victoria so quickly. I zoomed in and went frame by frame, but I still can't really quite tell which it is. Anyone else know? screenshot
Who would have guessed? Ever notice who Tugger is dancing with at this part of the Ball? Would you believe me if I told you it was Jennyanydots?! screenshot
Maybe it's just me again, but in the video, I always see Skimbleshanks as being a pervert. Maybe it's because in a waistcoat it emphasizes that he's not wearing pants, but I think it's mostly this part in the Jellicle Ball where Plato lowers Victoria onto him. Yuck... screenshot (why, I know not...)
Plato seems to have injured his fingers at some point during filming, because he's wearing a piece of tape around his first two fingers. It disappears between shots. screenshot
Many different takes must have been pasted together for the part in which everyone comes toward center stage, because there are so many indescrepencies as to where people are from shot to shot. (Note especially Alonzo, Etcetera...)
Just as everyone settles down for a nap, watch Etcetera (she's in the front, toward stage-left). She adjusts her armwarmer, and if you look quickly she pulls it up too far (2nd part from Puddycat) screenshot
Etcetera moves her leg before everyone else moves (this is the part where everyone is “waking up” on the note right after Skimble's).
Deuteronomy sees Grizabella before everyone else and tries to coax her down from the junk. He also tries to stop Alonzo chasing her off. screenshot (submitted by Puddycat)
Rather than getting up and dancing after the “nap” scene, Jennyanydots just gets up and sits on the tire with Old Deuteronomy. screenshot
I just have to say it: I always squeal in the shot where Misto is wiggling his head, it's just so irrestible...(*squee*) screenshot
In the same sequence as the Misto-headwiggle, watch the lower right corner of the screen. A camera on a crane can be clearly seen in two different shots. screenshot
Also in the same sequence as the Misto head wiggle (or “bobble-head move”), watch Cassandra. She's doing the same dance Mistoffelees is, but she looks so jointed and funny, she kind of looks like a puppet. (submitted by Aoide)
In the shot-change where all the lights go blue for the part where everyone is rushing across the stage, absolutely everyone's position is different from shot to shot. (If that made any sense to you, please congratulate yourself. If not, don't mind me...I'm just weird.)
When Alonzo, Munkustrap, Plato, Coricopat, and Admetus dance their part in the Jellicle Ball, you can see a shadow of a camera on Alonzo's leg. (It's right before the shot with Tugger and Old D.) [Mystitat: It's much easier to see in the video than in the screenshot] (submitted by Kitamarina).
A rather large part of the song was cut out just after Rumpleteazer and the female kittens come downstage.
There is one quick shot in which you can see that the cord that ties on Rumpleteazer's tail has come undone. I'm not even gonna try to tell you where it is: just check out the screenshot. screenshot
Watch Tugger in his dance with the other toms: his left sock has slipped down, and you can see a ring of white around his ankle. screenshot
After Tugger, Plato, Alonzo, Mungojerrie, and Admetus finish their solo dance, and everyone is getting in position for the next bit of the song, watch Mungojerrie deftly run away. screenshot
When Griz shows up at the end of the Jellicle Ball and Tugger struts by flips his mane up at her, Etcetera watches him walk across the stage, moving toward him and sitting up a bit. She looks very sad when he just flips his mane at Griz and leaves. (submitted by Roxie Hart)
When Grizabella turns up, Exotica lies down in the pipe, but she's gone in the very next shot. (submitted by Puddycat)
Here's a genuine movie-mistake: at the end of “Memory,” as Old D reaches out to Grizabella, he begins to reach out to her with his right hand, but in the next shot he's reaching with his left hand. screenshot 1, screenshot 2
At the beginning of the music for “Moments of Happiness,” Coricopat and Tantomile are already onstage, but later they appear entering again. (submitted by Fluffs)
When the cats are coming back on stage, Plato climbs down from the tyre 3 times. The 1st time he sits behind Etcetera, the 2nd he sits nect to Electra and the 3rd is in the wide shot of the whole stage. (submitted by Puddycat)
Alonzo's action #6: as Gus is coming in and settling down on the paint can, watch Alonzo as he crosses downstage. He rubs his head on Victoria's back. (I would normally regard this as normal cat behavior, but Victoria is Mistoffelees' territory!) screenshot
As everyone spreads out for “Moments of Happiness,” watch Mistoffelees and Rumpleteazer. They start sniffing each other, and seem to be about to nuzzle... screenshot. (submitted by Miko, complete with screenshot!)
Watch Jemima when Munkustrap is regarding Gus. She seems itchy...
You can tell that Jemima kicks Etcetera after she falls from singing her solo.
Throughout all of Gus's song, Mistoffelees magically appears and disappears from shot to shot (when you can see him, he is on the boot of the car next to Victoria). (It's most noticeable when Gus sings, “as we did in the days when Victoria reigned.”)
More disappearing and reappearing: Pouncival keeps switching from the car, to Deuteronomy's side and back to the car again. Did he dig a little tunnel, or is Misto zapping him from one place to another? screenshot1, screenshot2 (submitted by Fluffs)
Also throughout Gus's song, Exotica's costume switches from the sleek jungle-cat kind she wears during the rest of the show to a more generic cat unitard, with fur on the shoulders. This continues into “Skimbleshanks.” (It's most noticeable when there is a shot of Old D.) Come to think of it, almost every time Exotica can be seen (which isn't all that often) she is switching costumes. screenshot
When Jellylorum begins singing, she's got a long blond hair hanging off of her wig. screenshot
Just before Gus sings 'I have played in my time...', you can see Skimbleshanks come on in preparation for his own song. (submitted by Taij)
Jemima giggles at Munkustrap on the line, “When the gallery once gave him...” screenshot (submitted by Fluffs)
On the line 'the gallery once gave him' Pouncival looks really bored and it looks like like he's trying to get something out of his teeth. (submitted by Puddycat)
When Gus mentions the days when Victoria reigned, Misto gives Victoria a nudge. (submitted by Taij)
Is it just me, or does Firefrorefiddle have Munkustrap's gloves? screenshot
Hey, I'm not the only one who sleeps through “Gus: the Theatre Cat.” Apparently, Skimbleshanks cannot keep his eyes open, either. (submitted by Franz-Fanatic) screenshot
During Firefrorefiddle's 1st appearance, Skimbleshanks disappears from the junk, but he's back in the next shot. screenshot 1, screenshot 2 (submitted by Puddycat)
Firefrorefiddle leaves a shadow. A bit odd for a transparent being, eh? (submitted by Franz-Fanatic)
Coricopat is missing from the top of the car until Firefrorefiddle's second appearance, and even after he does appear, he flickers out when Gus does "these modern productions" for the last time. (submitted by Puddycat)
Has anyone stopped to think what the heck Firefrorefiddle is doing as he walks around the stage?! He seems to be putting out his arms and grabbing stuff, but then does these weird turns ... my best guess would be that he's trying to navigate a booby-trapped passageway, and has to hit buttons on the walls as he walks through the corridor .... ^_^
When Firefrorefiddle bows to Gus, you can see that there is no one in the pipe or next to it. But when Gus whimpers and exits, you can see Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer sitting in it, and Tumblebrutus is next to it. screenshot 1, screenshot 2
Munkustrap picks up the paint can at the end, but what the heck does he do with it?!
Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat
In the entire first verse of “Skimbleshanks,” watch the female kittens. They imitate Skimble's movements quite cutely.
When Skimbleshanks is going on about how the station masters' daughters would be searching high and low, the twins look up and down, then look at each other knowingly. (submitted by Taij)
On the line “At 11:42, with the signal overdue...” notice Tugger make his way to center stage behind Old D. He seems to escort Cassandra up from where she is sitting, and then heads to his spot where he sits until “Mistoffelees.” I normally wouldn't say anything, but he does it as a human would, and not like a cat. It looks out of place. screenshot
Electra jumps to Skimbleshanks' tail on the line 'That's when I would apear...' before Skimble walks over to Tumblebrutus and Asparagus. (submitted by Fluffs)
When everyone sings, “And he gave one FLASH of his ...” Watch Skimble's feet. On the word “Flash,” he steps on Asparagus's foot.
Tugger can be seen throughout most of the song from where he starts out “Mistoffelees.” (He's visible after “He gave one FLASH of his glass-green eyes...”) His arms are cutely dangling off the construction of the left stage wall and he nods his head with the music every now and then. (submitted by ShuraChan) screenshot
Cassandra stands up twice. (when Skimble sings, “More or less”)
On “It's certain that he didn't approve,” watch Cassandra give Electra the look of death. screenshot
Rumpleteazer makes a funny face when they sing, “He's a cat that couldn't be ignored.” Really, it's to die for. screenshot
Jemima takes her “Was aboard!” leap a second before everyone else.
When the kittens and cats dive forward to listen to Skimble, Cassandra and Rumpleteazer adjust their tails. (submitted by Sleeping Tiger)
Pouncival and Mungojerrie are the only toms in the semi-circle of younger cats listening to Skimble tell about the compartment on the train. (It's another thing that makes me feel like Skimble is a pervert...)
On the first "woo woo," watch Tumble make a funny train honking motion with his arm.
On "And the berth was very neat," Deuteronomy leans back against Munkustrap and Admetus, like he's lying in a berth (bed). screenshot
I just thought this was ironic: because of the bright spotlight, you can tell that when Skimble sings “And not a speck of dust upon the floor,” there really is quite a bit of dust upon the floor.
On, "Not a speck of dust upon the floor," Jennyanydots can be seen in the background making a “no, no, no” sort of motion.
Also as Skimble sings about the light, watch Coricopat in the background. He follows Skimble's motions, but then stops and looks kind of embarrased.
Watch Exotica as they sing, “They all could reflect it was very nice.” Her lip-sync is way off.
In Skimbleshanks when he sings "For Skimble won't let anything go wrong." Admetus shakes his head and pulls one of his famous faces. (submitted by Chelsey T.)
In Skimbleshanks when the cats are singing "When they crept into their cosy berth" Admetus looks at Skimble confused and points to him. [If you look closely, it's more of a shocked than confused look. He points, gets this scandalized look on his face, then looks at Old Deuteronomy. I figure it's because Skimble pretends to undress. In any case, if you can catch the look, it's cute.] (submitted by Chelsey T.) (corrected by Aoide)
Alonzo scratches himself where he shouldn't when he's on camera on "When they crept into..."
On a similar note, Jellylorum isn't even trying to lip-sync to the “Oo's.” She's just sitting there smiling. screenshot
As everyone gets up from the big semicircle, watch Etcetera, stage right. She does a backwards cartwheel, or something like that. It's quite impressive. screenshot
Pouncival enters twice with the umbrella. First he comes onstage very soldier-like, the second time he runs onstage, and salutes to Skimbleshanks. (submitted by Fluffs)
As Skimble is rising up on top of the trunk, Victoria, Electra, and Pouncival give him a cute kitten-salute. (the Pouncival part is from Fluffs, that darn Pouncival fangirl who sent me about a dozen Pouncival things to catch...)
When the cats get the part for the makeshift train, Coricopat and Alonzo hit each other with the wheels. (submitted by Puddycat)
This one's on Etcetera again: watch her as she's settling down in her train position. She seems to nod or “hmph” to someone off camera, stage left.
