Video/Tour Differences

Here's a page that compares little quirky differences between the Cats Video and the US Tour V (the only one I've seen), because I know (from personal experience at least) that some newer members of the fandom may not be familiar with the show as it is performed live. If you've more to add to this list (or you'd like to compile one for another tour/production), please contact me! (I can't guarantee these will be in any sort of order, by the way.)

US Tour V

Costumes:
-you can still see many performers natural skin-tone on their faces
-Mungojerrie is roughly as orange as Rumpleteazer
-Tugger's mane looks pretty and realistic
-Jennyanydots' special costume is orange
-Grizabella is very very tattered; tail reaches a bit past the floor
-Bustopher looks like a decent tuxedo-cat
-Rumpleteazer wears something like a unitard-leg during hers and MJ's song

Costumes
-almost everyone's makeup completely covers their face
-Mungojerrie has much more black than Rumpleteazer
-Tugger's mane looks like a rug tied to his shoulders, and he has a chain tied to his belt
-Jennyanydots' special costume is pink! (Or it looks like it, anyway)
-Grizabella is a bit sparkly; her tail is super-long
-Asparagus has to get Bustopher's costume ready in a hurry: it looks like he just dons a coat and a beard; there's no make-up change, and it looks weird
-Rumpleteazer wears fishnets during their song!

On “What's a Jellicle Cat?” the cats all just seem to look out at the audience

On “What's a Jellicle Cat?” the cats look at the audience while saying the line twice, turn away to go offstage in contempt, but then all come back and say the line in disbelief once more (as if to say, “I guess we're just going to have to explain it to these idiots).

Jellylorum is old.

Jellylorum is as young as Bombalurina and Demeter.

In “Naming,” the cats say most of the names pretty dead-pan.

In “Naming,” when a the name of a cat who is onstage is announced, someone next to that cat will make a little motion to him/her (put a paw on their shoulder, give a praising glance, etc.)

Jennyanydots comes out of the trunk of the car in her song

Jennyanydots rolls out of the oven, stage-right. (May depend on size of stage.)

The cockroach-tap-dance is short.

The cockroach-tap-dance is much longer and very funny!

Mistoffelees stays onstage for all of “The Rum Tum Tugger.”

Mistoffelees is offstage for most of Tugger's song, and when he does come onstage to say his line, he is still wearing his cockroach costume.

Tugger uses his tail like a guitar.

Tugger uses his tail like a guitar and like a microphone.

The toms simply line up for Bustopher's inspection.

The toms groom themselves (rather ... thoroughly, I might add) before Bustopher's inspection.

Bustopher gives the flower from his buttonhole to Jennyanydots.

Bustopher throws his flower into the audience

Rumpleteazer's line: “...quick-change comedians, tightrope walkers, and acrobats,” is pretty smooth and monotone.

Rumpleteazer's line goes, “...quick-change comedians, tightrope walkers, and [pause during the cartwheel] acrobats.”

MJ and RT say their names the first time as though introducing themselves to the audience.

MJ and RT say their names the first time as though accusing each other of something.

MJ and RT come onstage with little bags of loot.

MJ and RT come onstage with giant socks full of loot.

Mistoffelees goes to fetch Old D.

Skimble goes to fetch Old D.

There is no intermission, really.

There is an intermission (between “Memory” and “Moments of Happiness”) and Old D stays onstage, unmoving, the whole time.

After “Old Deuteronomy” comes “The Awful Battle.”

They don't do “The Awful Battle.” (I think this is an American thing... =(

There are dance bits cut out of the Jellicle ball.

You get to see the Ball in its entirety! (One dance-move looks like this: click here)

Mistoffelees and Electra dance together during the mating-dance.

Mistoffelees and Cassandra dance together during the mating dance.

Grizabella gets scratched once by Pouncival.

Grizabella gets smacked many times, especially when she comes on right after the Ball.

The set is really made of many over-sized pieces of junk.

Most of the set-junk is molded plastic (probably to help with the tour-traveling) made to look like lots of junk piled together.

Gus is played by an older actor.

Gus is played by a young actor who can sing quite well!

Jellylorum looks like a caretaker to Gus in his older years.

Jellylorum acts more like Gus's daughter, and encourages the audience to applaud him.

Skimble is Scottish.

Skimble's accent depends entirely on the actor who plays him (ours sounded a tad cockney!).

It goes straight from “Gus: The Theater Cat” to “Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat.”

There is the glorious song “Growltiger's Last Stand,” which must be seen in its entirety to be believed.

“Magical Mister Mistoffelees” seems abbreviated.

“Magical Mister Mistoffelees” is very long, and includes much more solo-dancing for Misto.

Grizabella is taken away to the Heaviside via a golden claw.

Grizabella is taken away via a UFO which comes down on a string. (May depend on size of stage.)

After “The Ad-dressing of Cats,” it goes straight to the credits.

The cats get to bow! They come on in by themselves or in pairs, and most do cool little moves or flips and things. Afterwards, they call come out and have a little party onstage to the tune of “Mr. Mistoffelees.”

[There are no bows.]

At the very, very end, only Tugger and Bombalurina are left onstage. Tugger gestures to Bomba as if to say, “Come on, baby! You know you dig me! Come on!” Bombalurina then smacks him and flounces offstage. The audience goes wild.
