Age Expectancy Surveys By Natural Advocate | December 20, 2007 - 12:15
pm - Posted in Natural Anti Aging
If you are looking for some information about your health habits and
how they may effect your longevity, try taking a quiz on the site
online by keying in livingto100.com. They present you with a 10
minute long survey that is detailed about your lifestyle as it relates
to your health. You must be honest in your answers so that you don’t
skew the results.
To take this survey, you must register on Eons.com first. After
answering all of the questions in the survey, they come up with an age
you would be expected to live until barring any unusual accidents or
unforeseen circumstances.
The questionnaire starts with birth date, living arrangements and how
you manage stress and what you feel your sources of stress are. The
next set of questions are concerning your life habits such as drinking
or smoking and exposure to second hand smoke.Â
In this survey, you are asked your height and weight and what your
eating habits consist of.  In the nutrition section, you are asked
if you eat processed meats and red meats and how many times a week.Â
What percentage of your diet is carbohydrates is addressed and also if
you eat snacks and if they are healthy or unhealthy in nature.
Supplementations are covered in the survey such as iron with a
multivitamin and calcium supplements with vitamin D.
Questions are asked about exercise routines of 30 minutes per day and
how many times a week you partake in this. The next area the survey
covers is your blood pressure and cholesterol levels if you know
them. The survey asks you if you’ve had a heart attack or have
diabetes.
The next area covered is your family history with the average age that
your relatives passed away and includes questions about any family
history of cancer.
Reproductive health questions are covered next with questions about
children you’ve had and at what age. Also covered for women over 50
was the age at which you stopped menstruating.
Information was collected about your level of brain exercise
activities such as sudoku puzzles or crosswords and how often you
engaged in this type of activity.
When you are done with the survey, they calculate how many years you
would be expected to live based on your answers. They also give you
suggestions on ways you could add years to your life. I could add 1
year to my life expectancy by better managing my stress and getting
more sleep. Another year could be added if I reduced my red meat
consumption and reduced my sun exposure.
The survey was interesting and it makes you think about your lifestyle
choices more. I liked my results as they thought I’d make it to 91
years old.Â

(Be the first to comment) Light Therapies for SAD By Natural Advocate
| December 18, 2007 - 12:42 pm - Posted in Natural Depression &
Anxiety Relief
The holidays should be a season to be jolly and joyous, but for those
suffering from SAD or seasonal affective disorder, it is a time of
depressive mood swings. Seasonal affective disorder is depression
brought on by shortened daylight hours and longer periods of darkness.
Seasonal affective disorder occurs from late fall until early in the
spring. If you notice symptoms of depression and anxiety interfering
with your ability to function or cope with life that coincide with the
change of season, visit with your doctor for a consultation.
SAD, in theory,is caused by the lack of light that, in turn, causes
your serotonin levels to drop. If your depression is mild,
brightening up the light levels in your home coupled together with
exercise may suffice. If your depression is deeper, consult your
physician and consider light therapy or even an herbal remedy for
depression may help lift light blues and mood swings or
inconsistencies after a period of use (everything takes time to level
out).
The lights used that simulate sunlight are surprisingly reasonable and
can be effective for treating symptoms of SAD. For $225.00, the
Sunbox DL light box comes as a desk lamp style and is convenient and
glare free. Another tabletop variety of sunlight simulation is the
Blue Max dimmable full spectrum lamp. It may be used at work or home
and sells for $159.00.
For $185.00, you can purchase the Golite PI Light Therapy unit. This
system is made by Appollo Health systems and is a fully programmable
type of light. Also available for light therapy is a dawn simulator
light the box called the Blue Max Sunrise System. This system sells
for $169.00 and it slowly brightens for a stress free way to awaken
with light.
SAD effects women more than men and is uncommon in children and
teens. It is relatively simple and economical to treat with light
therapy and visits to your physician to monitor your progress.Â
When selecting a light, make sure you select one with a filter for
ultraviolet light. The light should be placed above your eye level
and you do not want to stare at the light as you will damage your
eyes.Â
Daily sessions start at 15 minutes and increase to 30 or 45 minutes in
gradual increments. Usually response with mood improvement occurs
within a couple of days to several weeks varying with each individual
case.Â

(Be the first to comment) Garlic for Fleas? By Natural Advocate |
December 16, 2007 - 8:24 am - Posted in Foods
You may have heard this natural home remedy before if you have pets -
especially if you have outdoor pets. You see, outdoor pets are
especially magnets for fleas in the summer. Worse yet, if your pets
pick up lots of flease before winter time, and they’re closed indoors
all winter before you have the flea problems under control, your house
can turn into a veritable flea breeding zone.
I remember as a kid, my dog Shadow, who was black lab, had a
particularly bad case of fleas. In fact, it was so bad that the poor
dog had allergic reactions to the attack of fleas and her hair fell
out terribly, so in addition to constantly scratching, she suffered
the embarrassment of hair loss in addition (yes, reportedly dogs and
cats feel embarrassed when they lose their hair, just like people).Â
The worst part was that the fleas came indoors and our house was
literally infested with fleas in a matter of a few weeks after we had
gotten her as a puppy.Â
We tried everything - we had to flea bomb the house several times, and
we also had to resort to giving the poor dog flea baths weekly, which
the dog hated. No wonder she kept jumping the fence and getting
out! Then we heard from a neighbor that she heard that feeding the
dog garlic cloves in her food would help to keep the fleas off of
her.Â
Unfortunately the dog refused to eat the food because she had a keen
sense of smell and she wouldn’t go near it if we put the garlic in it,
so we had to give up, but several people afterwards swore by garlic in
the dog food as a great addition to their war on fleas. The reason it
is supposed to help when fed to the dog in their food is that the
garlic builds up in the blood stream, and since fleas bite, and feed
on the dog’s blood, they did not like the taste of the blood with the
garlic in it. Talk about an herbal skin care remedy, this was the
ultimate flea fighter for dogs.Â
It was essentially sort of an “internal flea repellant” if you want to
look at it that way. I remember we had fleas so thick in the house
that when my sister and I were getting ready for school, we would put
on white socks, and literally pick about seven fleas off of each foot
and kill them before we left for school! Ugh, gives me the willies
just thinking about it now!Â

(Be the first to comment) Joint Health Natural Remedies By Natural
Advocate | December 15, 2007 - 6:02 pm - Posted in Natural and Herbal
Treatments
I always find it funny when there are studies published that come out
in the news that try to totally discredit any type of natural remedies
or herbal healing products or nutrients, but they then say that it’s
the placebo effect, and if it “works for the person” then they should
continue to take it. I also often wonder what types of studies are
done, and if the same care that goes into clinical studies and trials
for medical prescription drugs goes into the study of herbal
alternative health supplements or not. My hunch is no.
The most recent one I read was about the “fact” that a natural
arthritis remedy, glucosamine chondroitin, which is available,
although admittedly in highly varying degrees of quality, in
drugstores and natural food stores for a fraction of many of the
prescription meds that are supposed to help with arthritis and joint
pain, is not really effective on joint pain and developing arthritis.
Well, tell that to my boyfriend. I did not really tell him or lead
him to believe that it was any sort of miracle cure, but I bought it
for him and said it might help him with his arthritis. You see, he’s
not even thirty years old and arthritis runs in his dad’s side of the
family big time. He has a bit of it in his hands already, and has a
hard time of it when the weather changes or when he’s under stress for
some reason.
After he’d been taking this special joint health supplement, he swore
that it improved the pain he felt in that hand that had the beginnings
of arthritis. He said that when he ran out and stopped taking it, he
did notice that he felt more pain and discomfort after about a week of
not being able to take the supplement for joint health. Now you tell
me, is that just coincidence, or is it real?Â
I’m the first to admit that the power of our mind over body is perhaps
the most influential power we hold over the health and endurance of
our bodies and vital systems, however, how are we to truly know that
something doesn’t work, because someone has told us that is “shouldn’t
work”, or that there is no scientific evidence to back it? If it
works for you it works for you, end of argument. This is exactly why
I’m so against a lot of government interference in the offerings of
herbal supplements.Â

(Be the first to comment) To Flu Shot or Not? By Natural Advocate |
December 13, 2007 - 8:30 am - Posted in Medical News
There are many schools of thought on the increasingly popular idea
that we can prevent colds and flus by getting the flu shot at the
beginning of the flu and cold season, which is at the beginning of the
winter usually. Apparently the flu shot is a tiny dose of strains of
the flu and colds (it’s many times hard to differentiate between the
two, which both can create aches and pains that are very similar),
helps to prevent the onset of a full blown cold or flu during the peak
season, since it helps the body create ready-made antibodies to
certain strains so it may fight them off in the event they do get
introduced into the body.
Some, like me, believe these shots are totally unnecessary. In fact,
I’m not even sure that this is a good thing, because it’s messing with
nature’s natural order, and the introduction of certain cold and flu
strains into the body at different intervals, not all at once, may be
nature’s way of giving the human immune system it’s natural defense
against the colds and flus in the order they were meant to.Â
Or heck, maybe you weren’t meant to aquire all these antibodies
together, and who knows if you would have even needed to develop these
antibodies if you kept yourself healthy and fit during the season for
the cold and flu strains, and your immune system was naturally so
strong that it didn’t need to aquire these antibodies quite yet.Â
People who smoke, don’t eat correctly, or maybe don’t move a whole lot
have been thought to have weaker immune systems, so simply quitting
smoking, eating better and working out may be a much better defense
than any flu shot! See our review for hypnosis for quitting smoking,
which is one of the best ways to kick the habit in our opinion, along
with herbal smoking cessation products which help the body cope with
the physical hardships of quitting smoking.Â
Many companies with health care systems and programs, like mine, which
is an insurance company, offer the flu shots at the beginning of the
season all with good intentions, and many people do take them up on
it. However, are we really introducing unnecessary bodies to the
blood stream? Isn’t this kind of putting the cart before the horse in
a sense? I don’t know about you, but the healthiest people I know who
never even get the colds or flus are the ones who would never even
think to get a flu shot! Coincidence, I don’t think so!Â
