If I Could Hear My Mother Pray

The year was 1975, I was eight & I learned a new word: “cancer.”  Mom and dad shielded me from so much, but there were things that happened that they couldn’t protect me from.  Putting together the bits and pieces, it was obvious mom was sick.  She had cancer and it was malignant.

One day I was playing in the floor and mom was in the chair praying and crocheting.  In my eight-year-old way I asked the big question:

“Mom, what is malignant?”

Without missing a stitch she said:

“It means everything is gonna’ be alright.” That was all I needed to hear.  Mom said so and I believed it.

A few nights later I woke up to the sound of mom praying.  I vividly remember her prayer:

“Lord if you will just allow me to see my children grown I will be so thankful.”

Days and months passed and mom went through several surgeries.  I recall hearing at one point; she had 3-6 months to live – the cancer had spread.  Of course mom, dad and countless others went to prayer.

The outcome was astounding by all definitions.  The tumor had been removed and upon further examination – contained no traces of ‘cancer.’

Mom wore her scar proudly.  The doctors wanted to perform plastic surgery but she told them it was her testimony, and she told everyone that gave her an opportunity, about the power of prayer!

Mom passed away in 1999 (not of ‘cancer’ I might add).  Through that process I was reminded of mom’s prayer in the middle of the night:

“Lord if you will just allow me to see my children grown I will be so thankful.”

God honored her prayer and countless others.  She left a legacy for me – there is extreme power and prayer!
