In my first year in the college in 2003 i was really annoyed when i found out on clubs and societys day that there was no LGB society. but i had no idea what to do about it and i had no idea what was or even would be involved. so i decided what the hell and went up the clubs and soc.s officer and chanced my arm to see if she's give me a table in the aula. i was overwhelmed at how supportive herself and the staff were on this.....
anyhow with the help of a number of unnamed friends.. (you know who ye are) and some others we managed to get something up and running. i still didnt have a clue what we were doing but my main aim was to just have something avaliable to all lgb student s in the college whether they be out or not, gay, lesbian, straight, transgendered or just confused. i wanted some sort of a safe environment where no one felt they had to hide anything. I also wanted to provide people who are unsure or dont want to ask, with information on this sometimes taboo issue. this is where this website will be particularly helpful.
In the year 2003/04 we took a trip to Brighton UK, we attended The national college of art and designs xmas party, we went to a number of nights out in Dublin city and also one in waterford. and of course the big even pink training 2004 which was held in galway city. The night club tribes was jammed with over 600 lgb students, the pink training students had come from all over the country to descended upon galway.
In 2005 there was a considerable advancement, we doubled our members and have people joining all year steadily. pink training 2005 was held in UCC cork city and was a huge success as usual. photos are included on here... We have been out in dublin this year also but with the influx og members we have concentrated more on keeping things central to sligo this year. . i have teamed up with a great guy called paddy from town who runs a night in fureys bar every tuesday and it had been a massive success with oround 30 attending weekly. sligo had seen its first ever gay disco in the waterfront hotel rosses point a wee while ago. it was attended by the college members, the mens group in town and also the womns group, and is possibly going to be held more than once a year in the future...
I wish to thank all who have helped in the process of making the society work and to all who contribute to its success. thanks to the guy who designed this website lol , and to all who have come forward in joining and taking part in the soc. I hope we can continue this success in the future.
Alan
