.:*~The Wolfling~*:.

The wolfling is a very rare creature, almost never seen by human eyes. They exist in legend and fantasy, and in childrens bedtime stories, and few actual facts are known about them. Sometimes you can hear their songs in the night, beautiful melodies that float and twine with magic in the air, and mabey - just mabey - you can catch a gimpse of their crystal horns glowing through the darkness. They are creatures of fairy lore, and none can say for sure - are they real - or not?

Appearance

Wolflings are similar in appearance to a wolf, however they are smaller and leaner - a little fox-like in a way. They also have large ears and supurb hearing. Each wolfling varies in appearance as vastly as humans may, and wolflings identify each other by sight to a far greater extent then most creatures.

All wolfings have a pair of crystal horns, though these can vary in size and shape depending on the individual. These horns change colour depending on the emotions felt by the individual wolfling, however, different wolflings have different colours to reflect various emotions. Sometimes, a wolfling will be born with only one horn. This is very rare, and these wolflings are considered special - touched by destiny. They are considered very powerful, in ways not always clear, and single-horned wolflings feature in many legends - both as heroes and as the darkest villians.

Wolflings vary in colour from dark greys to nearly completely white, and in all shades of brown, gold and red. Their fur can only be a natural colour however, so there's no such thing as a pink, green or blue wolfling, or any other strange colours. (Kazzienna is a dark red/brown wolfling.) They alomst always have some sort of markings or patterns on their pelt, lighter or darker then the main colour, but a few pure ones can be found. Pure white wolflings are extremely uncommon, while completely black woflings are almost unheard of.

All wolflings wear a necklace with a gold or silver pendant, which denotes a certain aspect of themselves. For example, Kazzienna wears a trebel clef, because it symboizes music - and indeed, she follows life like an unexpected melody, sometimes flowing with it, and sometimes composing it. This necklace is given to a wolfling at birth, and changes shape as they grow and mature. Sometimes, it ay change shape several times throughout childhood - sometimes it remains the same from time it is first placed around an infants neck. This necklace is the most important possession a wolfling owns, and is a symbol of themselves.

Society

Wolflings are nomads - they do not stay in one area for very long, instead preferring to constantly seek out new places and advetures. A lust for tavel and freedom keeps them moving onwards. Wolflings always travel in a pack, known as a 'choir', due to the wolflings' unique howl, or 'song'. A wolfling choir howling is one of the most beautiful sounds one may hear, as they create gorgeous harmonies and music.

The heirachy of a wolfling choir is fairly simple. It is run as a democracy, with each wolfling having a say in any decision that would affect the choir as a whole. Any wolfling may stand and state his or her own opinion, in an attempt to sway others. Each choir has a 'master' who arbitrates all debates and makes the final decisions for the group, based on what the majority wants, and on his or her own wisdom. The master is elected by the choir each time a previous one steps down, and remains master until he or she steps down or passes away. Sometimes a choir may force a master to step down, usually because he or she seems to not have the best intrests of the choir as a whole in mind, but this is very rare.

Each choir is basically autonomous, but once a year, at the time of the new year, all the individual choirs come together in a week which is known as the Gather. The purpose of the gather is mostly to catch up with old friends and reletives, and to spend a week relaxing and having fun. It is also a time to address the Chorale - the entire collective of wolflings - on issues that affect every choir, and for individuals to stand and debate the best possible solutions. In these cases, the masters of each choir meet after the day of debating is over, and decide which solution is the best one for all choirs to follow. The Gather lasts until the sun dawns upon the first day of the new year, when the goodbyes are all said, and the choirs disperse once more to their travels.

Sometimes, one may find a wolfling who does not run with a choir. These wolflings are exiles - cast out from the Chorale for the worst crimes. As the wolflings are usualy fair and peacable creatures such measures are rarely necessary, but it does somethimes happen. The decision to exile a member of the Chorale can only be made by the masters at a Gather, and once decided, it is final. The Chorale is assembled to watch as the punished is cast out, so all may know his face. Once exiled, a wolfling is refused help by any other individual or choir, and is chased away from wherever a choir decides to roam. An exiled wolfling does not wear a necklace. It is taken by the masters and thrown into a fire during the exile. Exile is the worst possible punishment for a wolfling. It means eternal solitude from their own kind. They are not truly a wolfling any longer, they merely look like one.

Kazzienna does not run with a choir, but she is certainly not an exile either. She left because she felt she needed to run free, to live her own life, withough a choir to slow her down, for a while. Wolflings in her situation are very rare, as they're naturally social creaures. So is she, but she can't stand to be around the same people for too long. She needs space. Kazzi attends the Gather each year, and sometimes joins a choir for a short time if she sees one on her travels because while she doesn't run with a choir she is still part of the wolfling Chorale. She just enjoys her freedom.

So you want a wolfling?

I have absolutely no problem if anybody wants to create a wolfling character. (Or even a whole choir full!!) I wouldn't go to all the troble of coming up with an entire species profile if I was going to keep it all to myself. :D Just remember to make sure you credit me with the actual species, possibly link back to this page or my deviantart account. if you claim it as your own I will be mega pissed off, kay?

Also, what I've written in this species profle is true for all wolflings - NO EXEPTIONS. It can't be fluro green and live in a city all by itself, else it's not a wolfling, just a fluro green horned wolf/fox/whatever. All wolflings have their necklace unless they're an exile, and all wolfings run with a choir, unless they're Kazzi. (And as I invented wolflings, I think I'm entiled to a little artistic licence with Kazzi.) And wolflings have two horns. Kazzienna is the only singe horned wolfling - there are never two alive at the same time. Just... stick to what I wrote and it'll all be good. n_____n (I know I'm a little overprotective, but this species is my precious brainchild and I don't want it getting mangled. ^^;)
