KOS-MOS (Kosmos Obey Strategical Multiple Operation Systems) is the humanoid heroine of the Xenosaga series, produced by Namco Ltd, a subsidiary of Namco Bandai. She is an armored android developed by interstellar conglomerate Vector Industries, more specifically in the First R&D Division, formerly spearheaded by Shion Uzuki.
R-CANNON - her right arm transforms into a cannon and blasts an anti-Gnosis shot.
KOS-MOS has significant powers believed to be superior to all other
party members. In addition to superhuman strength and speed, her body
is formed from some sort of highly advanced nanomachines that allows
her to morph parts of her body (specifically her arms) into various
energy projectile and melee weapons. Her body is also able to
self-repair and is very durable though not indestructible, and she is
also protected by a force-shield. She also possesses the ability to
summon weapons such as the F-GSHOT chainguns and her famous F-SCYTHE
and equipment from another location via a form of teleportation. She
also has a long-range sensory array, the D.S.S.S. system and CPU that
exceeds even those possessed by Observational Realians.
She also possesses a Hilbert Effect projector whose power is thousands of times greater than that achieved by even the largest spaceships.
KOS-MOS' name came from the Greek term kosmos, meaning, order. This hints a diametric relationship between her and chaos.KOS-MOS has red eyes, but from time to time, a more
human persona takes over her, signified by her eyes turning blue. This
persona is that of Mary Magdalene, called the partner of the Messiah.
Mary Magdalene is KOS-MOS' true personality that partially awakens when
Shion is in extreme danger.
In Episode III, Wilhelm, the mastermind behind everything in the trilogy, referred to chaos as Yeshua, an Aramaic name for Jesus of Nazareth. The implications of chaos having some divine significance are
scattered all throughout Xenosaga. The Anima Vessels, which are half of
chaos, are also referred to as the body of God. The database also
calls chaos' power the power of God.
KOS-MOS was created by Kevin Winnicot to hold the soul of Mary Magdalene, who possesses the power of Animus. According to the Official Complete Guide, Mary was the human incarnation of Animus, a power that complements Anima.
Chaos and Order, Yeshua and Mary Magdalene, Animus and Anima: these sure imply connections between KOS-MOS and chaos. And it's up to the fanfiction writers as to how far they will interpret these connections.

Other Trivia
KOS-MOS' name is a reference to a flower (cosmos), along with Shion's
(Tatarian Aster, a type of daisy) and MOMO's (peach blossom).
KOS-MOS, along with Shion and MOMO, appear in the cross-over strategy game Namco X Capcom. They are the first allies to be revealed in the game.
KOS-MOS's clothing set is available to female custom characters in Soul Calibur III, also produced by Namco.
It has been suggested that her presence as a custom character is due to
persistent rumors that she was an unlockable character in Soul Calibur II.
In Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, one can acquire a magnus entitled Rare Action Figure by restoring a section of the game's star map. The action figure in question is KOS-MOS as she appears in Episode I. The magnus' description asks the question what does the future hold for this android?
