General Encampment rules

1.  You must follow all the following rules as well as the rules that are set by the events that we are at..

General Encamping rules

All cars are to be parked in designated areas only. Each member is responsible for his/her own camping area. It is the members responsibility to insure that the camping space provided either within the actual encampment or in a provided mundane area is kept neat and trash is picked up and disposed of properly. All members must help to keep the encampment clean throughout the event day. Please help us look after any and all of our guests and please ask them to respect our needs . All members must help each morning to clean the encampment common areas and get ready for the opening of any event that we are at. This includes those of us that will be staying in the mundane and off sight camp spots. Depending on the event quiet hours begin at 11pm  lights out 12pm, (There may be events that run till midnight, if that is the case then it will be dealt with at that time.) no loud talking or loud music after this time. 1am is considered “Bed Time” and any noise above a whisper is unacceptable (Remember that we all need to get up and be freash for the next day). This goes for all camp sites either within the confines of the encampment or the provided mundane areas. Violators of this rule will have their camping privileges revoked and asked to leave. Campfires are allowed in designated areas only as the event allows.  Sand, Water and or fire extinguishers must be kept nearby all "fire pits" at all times. Use common sense and caution with all camp fires. Alcohol use, adults are encouraged to keep drinking to a moderate level. State Law prohibits the consumption of alcohol by minors (I.E. 21 YEARS OF AGE). Drug use is prohibited under state law. Failure to comply will result in the expulsion of the offender . Members and their guests are expected to be aware and respectful of the wishes of others. Members are expected to provide their own camping equipment, and dress for conditions.

2.   Every one in the encampment  must be in approved garb. Please refer to the Garb Guidelines

3.
We need as much help at events as we can get. Members must understand that the more people that show up for an event, the more time we can allow them to enjoy everything that is going on at said event. The fewer the number of people that show up, the more time that everyone must be in the encampment. Because of the uneique nature of what we do, there is no set time limit on how long that our members will need to be in the the encampment. Everything will be decited on at each event.  We still ask that the members try to come all the events and lend their support. We are not doing this to become rich, we are doing this because we like to teach and re-enact.

4.    There will be no drinking from the opening the event to the public till after the close of the event to the public. This means everyone no exceptions. If you brake this rule you will be made to leave the grounds. This includes the last day.

5.     There will be no use of illegal substances  at any time on event grounds. No exceptions. If you brake this rule you will be made to leave the grounds. This includes the last day.

6.      No use of tobacco products in view of the public. If you need to have a smoke or chew  you must do so behind seen. This includes while  you are walking around the event in service of the group (skits, praides, raids and Etc.) . First offence you will receive a verbal warning . The second offence a written warning and a fine of $10.00 that will go to the encampments  general fund. Repeat  offenses. will result in you being asked to leave the encampment. This includes the last day.  Failure to pay any fine’s is considered a repeat offence and will result in you being asked to leave the encampment. If you are out on your own time shopping or checking out the event, you may do so if you would like.

7.       Any talk around the camp that is negative to the management, and or any other group or business at the event, will result in you being asked to leave  the encampment and may result in you being asked to leave the event grounds. We do not wish to infringe on your rights of free speech, but this kind of talk will open the group to harm. We do not always know who we are talking to or who is listening . If you need to talk about these issues do it outside of the encampment .

8.       No member or thrall, shall at any time hand weapons of any type to anyone that is not either a member of the group or a visitor that is working with the group. In other words you do not hand weapons over to the general public, no matter who they are. If they would like to take a closer look, you may bring said weapon over closer to the ropes, but it does not leave your hands. If we are allowed to vend at the event, NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 IS ALLOWED TO BUY OR HANDLE ANY WEAPON THAT IS FOR SALE, NO MATTER WHAT OR WHERE THE EVENT.

  9.  Any and all thief will be dealt with harshly, if items cannot be recovered, local law enforcement will be brought in.

10.  DALHA or its membership will not be held LIABLE for any/all injuries during your stay in our encampment.

11.  DALHA is a family orientated Association and all children are welcome and must be accompanied with their parents up to the age of adult hood that being 21 years of age.  Parents will be held accountable for their children's actions.  All minors not accompanied by their parent must be accompany by a guardian who must have a sign and notaries permission of the parent/s and will assume all reason ability of the parent/s.  This permission form will release the Dark Ages Living History Association (DALHA) of all liability.  All minors must be out of the Adult area by 8:00pm. If noncompliance, family members will be subject to punishment and or expulsion from the Dark Ages Living History Association (DALHA).

These rules are not to stop anyone from having fun. Thay are to protect our ability to have the encampment in the future. We wish to be invited back and wish to build a good working relationship with all the events we are at.

Please note the council of Chieftains reserve the right to add or change the laws, responsibilities and rules as they see fit and/or as the circumstances arise.

Garb Guidlines

THESE RULES ONLY APPLY WHILE YOU ARE INSIDE THE CONFINES OF THE ENCAMPMENT. YOU MAY WEAR WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE WHILE WALKING AROUND OUTSIDE THE ROPES.

As this is the first year for some of you, we will be making some exceptions in garb. This is a list of rules and those temporary exceptions.

1. PERIOD MATERIALS
We are not concerned with authentic thread counts per square inch, nor the fact that things are not hand sewn. However, if you CAN find these things, it is a plus. We will not allow the use of nylon, rayon, acetate, spandex, polyester, or other synthetic fibers – as they are a fire hazard. Use wool, linen, silk, cotton, real velvet, or a combination of any of the above. Do not use large amounts of fine silk (the shiny stuff) or velvet (must use real velvet, not crushed velvet). For the record, raw silk is still wrong, but we are allowing it, only because it looks similar to linen. If you are not sure, ask about material choices and colors. Tunics and other clothing should be correct for your persona and gender. Additional rules for woman’s clothing will be covered below.

2. BRACERS
You can use arm bracers/vanbracers, but they must be made of leather. Although archaeologists have only found 2 examples of them we will allow bracers with limitations, but they should not be worn in the encampment unless you are going to be fighting or training.

A. Decorations must be in the Viking/Celtic style; not fantasy art.

B. If armored, they must be either studded, ring, splint (i.e. plates ) or chain mail. No spikes made of metal, nor leather, nor any other material.

C. Use of color of leather, or on leather, is limited to tans, yellows, dark browns, light browns, rust (dusty > rust), or small amounts of black and/or white. No solid black or solid white and no fur. If you have black bracers they will be OK for your first year only after that you will either need to get/make a new pair or not use them.

3. FOOTWEAR
No work boots, tennis shoes, or other modern footwear (unless aproved because of medical condition). Primitive types of footwear (i.e. moccasins, mukluks, Gillis, etc.) are allowed. As to color, tans, yellows, dark browns, light browns, rusts are your best bets. Black will only be allowed for your first year, after that you will need to get new ones.

4. BELTS
No wide belts: Belts should be a maximum of 2 inches wide, or less down to 1/2 inch. Colors should be the same as bracers. Decorations MUST be in the style of your persona (i.e. Viking, Roman, Celtic, etc.). No solid black, nor solid white. All belts must have the proper buckle; no ring belts. If you have a black belt it will be OK for your first year only; after that you will need to get/make a new one. The most common width was about 3/4 of an inch wide.

5. ARMOR
Body armor can be chain mail, ring mail, scale mail, brigandine ( i.e. coat of plates), padded leather or cloth, lamellar, or hardened leather. Watch the art work, keep it in the proper style for your persona. Maybe later or just post Roman. Early Roman style armor is iffy, unless you are a Romanized Celt. No biker spikes on any armor. No boot jacks, but leg greaves are ok in splint mail, ring mail or chain mail only. Like bracers, these are not to be worn around in the encampment unless you are or are getting ready to fight or train. After the fighting/training is over, your armor should be removed.

6. WOMEN’S CLOTHING
Women's clothing, (a side from Viking proper) are ok if they are of the proper cut for the time period and of  the neighboring cultures (such as: Irish, Welsh, Picts, Franks, Celts, Bretons, Magyars, Byzantine Greeks, Arabs, (sorry NO belly dancers) and Etc.) Use leather, silk or real velvet, in small quantities only. Again, if you are unsure ask about styles, material choices and colors.

7. HELMETS
Horned helmets are not allowed. Yes, Gaul’s used them (in the late Bronze and early Iron Ages, way before our time frame), but we are trying to show that Scandinavians (Vikings) did not use them. In fact, no one in the Dark Ages used them. Like bracers & armors, helms should be worn only when preparing for and during battles or training.

8. BLACK MATERIAL
NO Black Clothing! For your first year (and forever). Historically speaking, it was quite difficult to dye fabric black, and even more difficult to keep it that way. It tended to go either brownish, or bluish fairly quickly. On the other hand blues, yellows, oranges, orangish shades of red (as opposed to fascia), muted purples, and almost any shade of brown were easily obtainable, followed by clearer pinks,
olive, and yellowy greens. If in doubt, try to keep them near an earth tone. Solid one-color fabrics are the most common, however woven stripes, or woven plaids, are ok too; though probably not more than 3 (maybe 4) colors max, in the plaid.

9. FEMALE BELTS
Sorry, no bodices; and the belt width rule applies to women too. There is no evidence of any sort of metal, antler, bone, or horn buckles or belt fittings of any kind found in women's graves so far. However, there is some evidence of belts being worn, so try for something tied, and probably woven, (cloth, cording, tablet woven, possibly even soft leather - tied, etc.)

10.NO PINS/BROACHES/PATCHES/FAVORS
No non-DALHA guild/club/group pins. The only types of pins/broaches that are allowed are historically correct ones, from the culture that you are portraying. Embroidered patches & favors are NEVER historically authentic & in the Dark Ages heraldry barely existed, if at all. SCA related devices/badges/patches/ favors/etcetera are specifically not allowed to be worn within the confines of the encampment. This includes, but is not limited to, Guild, Club and SCA Patches and/or Favors. If you are unsure about wearing a symbolic image, do not wear it. You may seek specific approval from the entire DALHA leadership to wear a symbolic image that fits your persona’s culture, time & place. Don’t guess about authenticity, ask first and be prepared with extensive documentation.

11. WORN GEAR
Sword sheaths, knife sheaths and pouches should all be made of leather (or wood for the sword and knife sheaths) and should be in the same colors as belts (i.e. tans, browns, etc.). Stay away from black or white. Fur is ok for pouches only; not for knife or sword sheaths. If you have black sword sheaths, knife sheaths and pouches they will be OK for your first year only; after that you will either need to get/make new ones. Sword or knife sheaths that are black may be covered the with fabric and then painted or dyed with some other historically known medium (I.E. milk paint or natural looking paint or dye). This is not as difficult as it may sound; seek help.

12. WEAPONS
All weapons must be approved and correct for your persona. You really should not be carrying weapons unless we are doing a battle demo or training. That is not to say all weapons; you may carry/wear a knife and/or a small hand axe, but don’t carry around your swords, big axes, spears, etc.. Remember, we are trying to portray every day life. Women are welcome to partake in the combat demos and training. However, due to safety and insurance liability issues, if you are under 21 years of age, you will not be allowed to touch, wear, or use, a weapon in the encampment. For similar reasons, under NO circumstances are members of the public to be given a weapon to hold, touch, or use, unless we have vending rights at said event. Once again NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 IS TO HANDLE OR BUY ANY WEAPON THAT IS FOR SALE, AT ANY TIME OR EVENT. Only approved rebaited steel weapons will be allowed on the field when fighting or training. NO SHARP WEAPONS WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE WARN OR CARRIED WHILE FIGHTING OR TRAINING.

PLEASE NOTE: The above includes temporary exceptions to ideal standards of authenticity. As we gain more experience, the standards will only go up.

WE ARE ASKING THAT EVERYONE TRYS TO DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH, BUT IF YOU NEED HELP PLEASE ASK AND WE WILL TRY OUR BEST TO HELP YOU OUT. YOU WILL BE BETTER OFF IN THE LONG RUN IF YOU TAKE SOME TIME TO LEARN IT FOR YOURSELF. WE DON’T EXPECT YOU TO LEARN EVERYTHING OVERNIGHT, BUT WE DO EXPECT YOU TO TRY AND LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AT LEAST ABOUT YOUR OWN PERSONA.
