Born shortly before WWII, west of Manchester. Remember seeing the red glow in the eastern sky after the blitz on Manchester, Dec 1940. Chose the Science side at school, and after A Levels, started National Service Aug 1957. Cardington, West Kirby, and then RAF Locking as a traineer Ground Radar Fitter. Was trained on Types 7, 13, 14; and then on the Type 80.
After passing out as J/T Stewart in Aug 1958, I was posted to 2nd. TAF, Germany and joined 646 Signals Unit at Obernkirchen. After completing my National Service I read physics and electrical engineering at Cambridge, and then joined industry. Working for Marconi, I was Equipment Manager on the AI radar for the Tornado, Fighter variant, F3.
