Mid-War

Spitfire VB

Spitfire AA853, WX-C, 302 'Polish' Squadron, Kirton-in-Lindsey, August 1942. Ah controversy comes to my site! Most of what I have read tells me that the white stripes adorning this machine were worn during the Dieppe Raid in 1942 (Operation Jubilee). However, some recent literature says they were only for an exercise before the action.

Kittyhawk

Kittyhawk AK578, GA-V, 112 Squadron, Egypt, September 1942. While found to be lacking as a fighter by the RAF, the Curtiss P-40 Series was used to good effect in the Western Desert as a fighter-bomber. This example sports an early roundel style, and wears a fairly standard Desert Air Force sand/brown scheme as well as a shark's mouth motif, common on both British and American P-40 variants.

Mosquito (Bomber)

Mosquito DK296, GB-G 'G-George', 105 Squadron, No. 2 Group, mid-1942. A fairly standard three-tone Mosquito B Mk IV Series II scheme, this is the aircraft which led the famous attack on the Gestapo headquarters in Oslo, Norway on 25 September 1942.

Typhoon

Typhoon R8781, SA-H, 486 Squadron, Tangmere, December 1942. This machine features the short lived white nose/black under wing stripes identification markings applied to Typhoons in late 1942.

Spitfire VC

Spitfire JK715, SN-A, 243 Squadron, RAF, Hal Far, June 1943. Possibly the most successful Spitfire V to see service with the RAF (in terms of enemy aircraft downed), this aircraft sports an unusual color scheme of dark blue and dark green over blue undersides. Making it even less typical are its small code letters.

Mosquito (PR)

Mosquito W4051, LY-U, No. 1 Photgraphic Reconnaissance Unit (PRU), Benson, August 1943.This is an early scheme for GT's reconnaissance version of the famous de Havilland "Twin".

Whirlwind

Whirlwind P7102, SF-P, 137 Squadron, early 1943. Other than 263 Squadron, the only other unit to employ the Whirlwind was 137 Squadron. This machine wears the later blue/green color scheme and national markings typical of most home-based RAF fighters from 1942 on. Note: The current Whirlwind is very beta, and it has many mapping issues! This scheme attempts to do the best for what we've got!.
