MegaRace Intro

What?! You never heard of MegaRace? Well, sit back and relax while I tell you about this fun and yet weird old school videogame.

Here's a brief biography of MegaRace: Cryo Interactive, the french videogame company who were famous for their Dune games, created another videogame in 1994 called, MegaRace, a racing videogame that takes place on a game show in the distant future. The game, with it's beautiful pre-rendered graphics and live-action Full-Motion-Video was a success, selling over a hundred thousand copies. The game spawned two sequels before Cryo Interactive closed their doors forever.

Because of it's many features, MegaRace was a giant success. One of the cool features include over twenty minutes of FMV of MegaRace's host, Lance Boyle.

The actor who brings Lance Boyle to life is Christian Erickson. Unlike other late '80s, early '90s FMV actors in other videogames, his acting is very well done. The weird french writing is funny, but slightly high-brow. Let me quote one of Lance's lines in the game; you can listen to the *.WAV I recorded by clicking the "'I'm real'.wav" picture below:

You see - or hear - what I mean? But, nevertheless. he's very funny. There's also useless prizes like "a evening out with yourself", "covers for your car seats", "a watch" and "this scottish acc...", uh, I better not say; I won't spoil the surprise for you. Another cool feature was the graphics. Back in 1994, CGI animation was still a new concept to a lot of people and more and more companies began developing tools to create the medium. But, people couldn't afford the computers to handle the amazing graphics. Cryo Interactive, however, solved this probelm with a interesting solution: pre-rendered graphics. All of the graphics in MegaRace are pre-rendered; even the tracks are pre-rendered animations! This allowed people with crappy computers to play games with these amazing graphics. However, while this seems primative by today's standards, the graphics are nevertheless beautiful to look at.

Here's some other stuff that's worth checking out.
